We do need a number of different languages to perorm different tasks. eg you wouldn't use assembly code to create web pages. But I think there are far too many languages out there. I tend to only learn the languages I think are going to be most usefull to me.

I agree with you mike.
Infact there are some languages by which you can do all the things,
but the point is how much easily you can do??.
Pearl & Lisp are easier in text proccessing when comparing with other famous languages
In COBOL you cant connect to database but COBOL good in report generation

yes my friend i think that there is need of many computer languages. Because we need differnt Platforms for doing different things which is not possible by only experting in one language.

i am firm believer of the thought that one has to follow the right steps to achieve success, similar to that the road of computer language starts with C THEN C++ THEN OU CAN SWITCH TO ANY LANGUAGE, SO IT IS MUST TO GET KNOWLEDGE OF many languages, every thing can not be done by one language for example web pages can not be created using c/c++/java/sql for that one has to learn HJTML, similar to that if you want to make window based program then you have to learn VB/VC++ if you want to make platform independent program then you have to use java, for database access and working one has to get good knowledge of SQL and so on... so u must understand why many languages are necessary

Sure, there can be languages like C++ that can be scaled up or down to do just about everything. But the reason why there are so many different languages is that different ones have different strengths and weaknesses. The biggest differences are found when you jump between different language paradigms. Certain languages are able to implement certain goals more efficiently and there is no reason to force some language into a square hole.

history tells us that everything gr8 was developed from aprototype..similarly the computer languages were developed in this way....various languages are used for various methods of work

Learning C++ is one of the biggest steps you can take in learning computer programming languages since so many others model their languages after it. Now days, more people are taking these refined/fine-tuned languages and putting them all together to create super languages that can do any task you can think of.

We do need all the languages because each one was created to fill a need in programming and they wouldn't have been created if they weren't needed. There are some older languages that have been created and replaced by newer more updated languages, but sometimes the older language is still in use because there is still old hardware that is in use that might need code written in an older language. The goal of programming should not be to master a language, that takes time, but if you master the principles of programming you can learn any language and apply those principles and methods to any language you learn as long as the ability to use the language in that way is there.

The more computer language means the easier to learn the language as these new language are more human friendly. Hopefully, in the future, computer will understand more advance code input such as speech recognition. So, what are the codes you have learned now?
