How long do you wait to handout a Best Response?

I was just curious as to how long some of you wait before giving out a best response in one of your discussions. I've only made a few discussions of my own, which were initially slow in receiving responses to begin with, so I just started handing them out after one or two were given to whom I thought gave the best answer, thinking that's as many responses as I was going to get on the topic. Lately, after a few days of discussions stewing on the back burner, I've noticed people responding to them more frequently and with some great responses, some being much better than the ones I regrettably awarded. Maybe it's not a big deal, I just feel bad about it since they put so much time and effort into it, and I know that it sometimes feels good to receive one. How long do you generally like to wait?

I wait a while, till the topic stagnates, then I try to pick a best response. Sometimes I can't decide on a best response, so I pick none. I + rate all on-topic/good/relevant replies though.

Yeah, I always give +'s at least to those who leave decent and sincere comments. Thanks!

The first to post an impressive and enlightening response gets my best response. But everybody gets a +.

it all depends on how fast you get response to the particular topic. if the respnse is slow, i prefer waiting till i get 10-15 responses or till 1 week, whichever is later. i dont feel anyone would be much interested later than one week. if the answers fly in fast, i wait till around 100 responses, or till the discussion slows down a bit, again, whichever is later. it never goes more than a week for me. so i find, for marking a best response i need no wait more than a week. although sometimes, i seem to love a particular response very much, and it comes early on - i mark it without waitting for the others! i think a one week wait is safe. if a very good answer comes later than that, after you have marked your best response, there is no need to feel bad about it - it was just the poor bloke's bad luck!

Thank you for the wonderful advice, I appreciate it and it makes sense. I'm not sure I could wait a week, but I can try. Sometimes my slight OCD tends to get the better of me, where I feel like I have to get it done right there, rather than leaving it to wait. So patience, check. Thanks!

I wait for a few days and see if the discussion keeps active, but i have done like u. Been to fast to hand out the best response coz it was at the time. On the other hand, people posting can see that best response has been elected already =) I also always + the comments that belonbg to the subject no matter if i agree or disagree!

Same here, about marking comments whether I disagree or agree, providing the response is more than one word and has something to do with whatever's being talked about/asked. I actually do appreciate the feedback since it's something I'm genuinely thinking about, so it's the least I can do. Thanks :)

I give it a couple of days. Once the replies have started trickling off to nothing I'll go through my unresolved discussions and mark best responses. Unless I can't pick a best response for whatever reason. Or if it's a very special interest discussion, I won't wait as long since those don't get as many responses.

There is no specific time I wait to mark a best response. When one comes along I just know it is the best and mark it. I still have a few discussions with a couple of repsonses and am still waiting for responses..lol. There are few discussions you can't choose best responses on esp the ones that ask for favourites and the like. But it feels good to get a best response so I don't hestiate to mark others' too.

Yeah, I was pretty amazed to see that some of my day-old or more discussions started picking up again the other day when I'd long since given up on them, wasn't expecting that one lol. Thanks!

I usually wait awhile unless I receive a response that _really_ touches me for some reason. I agree that the first couple of times I opened a topic, I would get so excited about getting a reply at all that I would hand out the best response to the first or second person who replied *laugh* But I have tried to be a little more selective lately, not that I have posted that many topics overall. ^_^

Yeah, I think I waited a whole half hour *gasp* before selecting someone, especially on the first discussion. Go me! Then a few days later, someone gave me some pretty the type of advice I was looking for, so that my previous best response to the topic felt a little wasted. Thank you :)

I always wait for at least a couple of weeks before giving a best response because some people don't see your discussion immediately.

Yes, I'm starting to see that people might respond later to the discussion, whether seeing that one of their friends had previously responded to it, seeing it up on the queue again later, or perhaps underneath another discussion that might relate to it. Makes sense now lol. Thank you :)

That's a good question, I still haven't figured out a good strategy! I've been holding off lately on giving out a best response, because in many cases I'll get a "good" new friend that goes through many of my old discussions and brings up some better points than the people who previously responded to it... I have to have a difinitive best response to give them one or I just won't pick any of them!

Well, I'm currently living in SD for the time being, but lived in Irvine up until the end of high school. In fact, I'm visiting mom for a few more days here. Been ages since I've been to HB, though.

Ooh, a fellow OC'er! I guess that is what's been happening to some of my "older" discussions, friends comment on them or others checking out the profile...hehe, not that I'm complaining, least my questions are being answered. I certainly wasn't expecting that much. Gracias!

It depends on the type of response I get to the discussion. If its one of those where I haven't had any repsonse for more than 3 hours, the first person to reply with more than 3 sentences, and stays on topic, getsthe best response. On discussions that have a really heavy response I will wait for reponses to reach the fourth page before I start considering marking a best response.I do that so the responses have achance to really get good.

Yeah, I actually did the 3-hour bit originally and noticed some good responses were posted the next day lol. I'm starting to see the wisdom in making a choice on best response by page four though. Thanks

If i find a response that really touches me i will immediately mark a best response but if not i will usually wait about 2 or three weeks and then award one as i want to get the discussion out of the my unresolved discussions tab.

I have recently joined Mylot and getting used to it understanding all its Pros and Cons. I think marking a best response in the start of a discussion is a harmful thing because it makes people think that the particular discussion has already got a solution and it will be better to answer a discussion which is hot and and has not reached to any conclusion yet. But one should mark best responses after some debating...it adds to peoples interest.

I think most myLotters DO think about it. If you post a discussion, don't you think you have a responsibility to reply to most of the responses, to award the good ones with a "+" and to mark a "best response"? If you are thinking about the good of the forum, you will also mark a "-" to one or two word replies and report any copiers. Of course, if you are only here for the money, these things won't interest you, but I'm sure this is not true of you, and that in future you WILL do all these things.

Well, I try to give credit where credit is deserved, if at all. I know that receiving best responses helps what people earn to some degree, just not sure how exactly, so I try to help those who are kind enough to put a little more thought and effort into helping me out with whatever thought or question that I'm chewing on at the moment, or if they're advice or comments really touch me in a way. But that's me...

I'm sure it will happen for you sooner or later, looks like you've got a good head start and trying to leave sincere responses, which I think everyone appreciates. As far as discussions, maybe try for less jokes and go for topics that you are sincrely interested in or what to know about. Otherwise, I think people tend to see it as someone just trying to make $$$. Keep it general and sincere, yet something you actually show interest in, perhaps. Good luck and thanks!

I make it a point to rate as many posts I read as possible. If a certain post really inspired me, then I'll rate a best response. I believe when we rate other members, it encourages them to participate more regularly. To date, I have 3 best response which I feel I deserved because the answers I give satisfy me as well.

I too am in a confusion about this My lot should fix the responsibility of slecting best response within a fixed time frame. The topic should be closed.if the questioner fails to select the best response within a stipulated period, the topic should be removed or added to the archives.

Well, not sure I agree with you since it should be up to the user (person making the discussion) to decide when they wish to stop receiving advice, help, etc. or who to chose for best response, as it's obviously their choice. Plus, someone might come along with something better that's very helpful and what they were looking for, even if it's a few weeks later. Not to mention there will be times when no one really answers your question to your liking, or if there are answers, it could be done rather poorly or one-word responses that weren't sincere, but rather just another user's attempts for making money, not to answer your quest. Do they deserve best response? Nope. Anyway, thank you for your thoughts on this, however. Take care
