As we've been driving around our town lately my son is still pointing out christmas lights. Now, he gets excited and yells "Look! Pretty lights!" and as adorable as that is to me, i have to wonder...do you still have your christmas lights up? And if you do, please tell me why. I've always been very curious about this and have just now had the chance to ask a wide variety of people.

I live in an apartment, so we didn't do outside lights, but our Christmas tree is down.
If we did have outside lights, I can almost guarentee THEY WOULD STILL BE UP.
My husband works long hours & it's on the night shift, so when he gets home all he wants is to go to bed. During the day one of us (or both if we can find a baby sitter) drive a hour and a half to visit our daughter in the NICU (I mentioned what's wrong in your topic about winning the lotto) and by the time we pick up our son & get home, he usually has time to get a quick bite to eat then off to work he goes.
Oh and I wouldn't get up on a ladder & take them down myself, because I'm pregnant again & it wouldn't be smart in case I lost my balance.

Oh good grief, I can't believe I am admitting to this but my Christmas decorations are still up. I have no reason or excuse other than laziness. I'm actually hoping if I ignore them they will go away. Ok, not likely but wouldn't that be nice.

ah! i posted this discussion twice, typo and all. I'm sorry! But i love your reason. it's honest. it's true, and it's sounds like something that i'd say! my mother in law is taking hers down little by little..i think she's hoping they'll just disappear into their respective boxes until next year.

OMG!!! I am so in the gutter! I wish I could tell you what went through my mind when I read the title of this discussion, but then I would be more embarrassed then before!!
Anyhoo, to answer your question, no I have taken everything down. Even though it was just a small cloth tree that my mom had made for me, I regrettably had to put it away a few days ago!! But the year that my fiance and I "hooked up" (4 years ago), they still had their tree up and it was in the middle of November...now that is a long time to have Christmas stuff still up!! LoL!!

WHEW!! At least I know that I am not the only one who was in the gutter!!! LMAO!! And ya, the tree that my mom made is absolutely awesome. She decorated it with little white puff balls for ornaments and then had a string of Christmas lights beads with little angels hanging down. And on the very top is a huge bow...I love it!!! To my fiance and family, my first reaction was that they put it up WAY too early too, but then they told me that they didn't want to take it down from the year before...I laughed for days about that!!

That's so funny and exactly the same thing my wife said when she saw me typing on it!! I got a smack for the title until she looked what it was actually about. I think she embarassed herself also!! Wow, okay, i'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and thing that maybe they just had their christmas stuff up WAY early. And that cloth christmas tree sounds awesome!

I haven't seen this response yet, unless I missed it. Ours our down but they should be up.
Every year our priest explains around this time that most people took there xmas lights down a week ago when they shouldn't. Truly, we should have kept them up at least until sunday the the 7th. Some people keep them up even longer. Our priest says there is another reason to celebrate on that sunday - I think it's the epiphany, and that religiously speaking you should want to keep your lights up til then.
Like I said, we don't because it's more convenient to take them down after New Years when we are still on vacation, but if you wonder why some people have them up, that may be the reason!

we didnt put any decorations up this year because we were in the process of moving to a new house, and to look back it seems like there wasnt a christmas this year. the decorations make a big differens psychologically. at least to me.

I actually took mine down the day after christmas. I usually keep them up a long time after, but I couldnt take it. I needed the mess gone. I tore it down at like 8 pm and had it all put away right after. I actually put it up earlier this year though. I did it a week before thanksgiving.

We were the same way. Something seemed different about christmas this year, less like it was a holiday spirit and more like it was kind of a rush to try to get everything done. I think it's been a tough year for a lot of people, and they, like me, were just looking forward to a new year and a new slate. Thanks for responding!

We still have our blue icicle lights on the outside of our house. Our inside decorations came down last week. I have tried to get my husband to take the blue lights down. They have been there for nearly 3 years now and only half of them work. I should just get them down myself. Maybe if the warm weather comes back soon I will get them down.

I have to laugh, my wife does that sometimes. When i've not done something that needed to be done, she's done it herself. And I pay for it. Even if she doesn't make me feel guilty about it, i do a pretty good job of it myself. Maybe that's what he needs!

yeah, i can appreciate that. pretty much anything that my son enjoys we'll try to keep up as long as possible. It's not such a big thing to leave the lights up a little bit longer, right? I love to hear the excitement in his voice, so that makes it worth it.

No.I took my christmas lights down the day after the new year. And I too have been driving around my town and seeing other people with their christmas lights still up and all I can think of why is that those people are too lazy to take them down.

We still have our christmas lights up at our house. We are planning on taking them down within the next few weeks. We still turn them on, and with a snowstorm in the forecast, we're excited to have them on with a little snow flying through the air. Christmas might be over, but we still have a little cheer left!

My outside Christmas lights are still up because I still have eight inches of snow around my house. The inside decorations are put away, the tree has been taken down, now I just have to wait for this snow to melt.

Ok, Now I am jealous. My wife and I have been living in kentucky now for two years and the most snow we have seen has been about an inch deep. One inch and the people around here go balistic. I am serious an inch of snow and there is a rush on milk bread and eggs at every grocery store in town! The first year we weere here I was totally baffeled. If there is a little snow do cows no longer make milk? Do chickens have a problen laying eggs when there is snow outside their coop? Do bakeries stop making bread when it snows? In kentucky snow=insanity. Beware if you ever visit and it snows.

Don't be jealous--I'll share. I just moved to Albuquerque five months ago from New Orleans. The people here say the last time this much snow was around was over thirty years ago. I'm just lucky that some of my neighbors are from Minnesota and they have experience driving in it.

this year i didnt even put up a tree. because i have 2 9 month old kittens that tear up everything as it is let alone a tree. i was kind of disappointed but it's ok. i would rather my house be nice rather than torn up and tree decorations and pine needles all over the place. but here in my town i havent seen any christmas lights still up.

Mine are still up because well am afraid to get on the ladder and well my husband hasn't gotten around to it yet...lol I haven't seen anyone else around here that have any up still. They are up but we do not turn them on but I would like to get them down. lol Also I think some people have family that come at the first of the year and they want it to still be festive. I know one family keeps em up because his wife loves Christmas and well she likes to keep the lights up a lil longer than normal.

Well we took our lights down on the 7th January after "Little Christmas" was over. But I've seen houses too that still have their lights up AND turned on too. I've noticed too that some people had put their lights up at the beginning of November and turned them on. I can't understand this.

We just took our Christmas decorations down this past weekend. Sunday was the Epiphany, so I would say after that Christmas is officially over. I see no reason to keep the decorations or lights up after that. Although they do look so pretty.

My wife really enjoys looking at them, and that's how we would keep our son awake on the long drive back from my wife's mom's house, it would be wow! look at the lights! wow! so they were appreciated, but now it kind of makes us sad to still see them up.

No, we don't still have any up, but then we haven't really been putting up Christmas decorations here for years *laugh* On the other hand, I have still seen Christmas decorations up around our neighborhood. It doesn't bother me, though! I think that it is beautiful, so why rush to take them down? ^_^ It's really fun, too, around Christmas time, to drive around just looking at the displays that some people have. I couldn't beleive a few people's yards that we passed by this December.. one person had their entire (smallish) yard _entirely_ filled with huge blow up Christmas themed decorations, lights and whatnot! It was amazing *laugh* And it was a bit much! *laugh*

We took ours down on Saturday - twelfth night. I fit waas down to me they probably would still be up but my wife is good with getting these sorts of jobs done.
It's supposed to be bad luck to leave them up after the ^th of Jan - if thats true then there are quite a few in our street that sould be crossing their fingers.

i've never heard about the bad luck thing. I'm interested now in finding out where that originated from. We always celebrate twelfth night, but my wife is also typically as ready to take them down after christmas as she was to have them put up before christmas.

I like that, the idea of a new start on everything the first day of the new year, including having the decorations put up! I just think it's funny that for the other holidays everything always get's taken down relatively quickly, except for christmas. do you think it's because it makes people sad rather than ready for a clean slate?
