User ratings at myLot

The new user rating system at myLot seems quite interesting. Now, depending on the quality of the posts, the authors can be rated by the community.
Some may see it as an open door to abuse, though. If, for whatever reason, someone doesn't like another member of myLot, negative ratings will rain down on the victim. The author may thus become increasingly annoyed to see that articles he/she deems to be of good quality are being rated negatively.
I personally find this rating quite useful and, if it can discourage spammers of all sorts, then it is indeed a good thing. After ranting about myLot and its admins, I must revise my (quite harsh) judgement and admit that myLot is indeed improving.
Does anyone here have an opinion on this user rating system?

It crossed my mind that some of my favorite people with the biggest grudges against me, will continue to troll the board searching for my posts, just so they can mark them with a "-". However, after seeing I am in the 9 spot at the moment, I have to assume that if 2 people come along and give me a "+" that cancels out their little "-". At least that is my hopes anyway. If this be the case, it should prevent abuse of this system.
I do think this is a start at rooting out the spammers and trolls. It's an effort anyway, I have to give Mylot credit for trying. Who knows what will come next.
BTW, I am happy to see the little star things by my name. As the poster above mentioned it's kind of like back in school, however I wasn't the kid back then to get a star, so this is really a kicker for me. LOL

I'm sorry that your rating went down, but I'm glad I'm not alone - I was a 9 yesterday and now I am 8 today. I have to admit it has had me wondering who I have offended and/or if I have done something stupid or incorrectly. But I do like the idea behind the "star" system and is very similar to what one responder said the kindergarten star system -- it is however disturbing to think that people would actually go through and sabotage someone's rating system.

I am happy with the stars mylot has introduced.
These stars also tell us that the number of posts or the discussions started by a member does not really decide the quality on his writing.
There are loop holes in each and every system, so they will be in these 'stars' too! The better part of the 'stars' and the abuse it will create are two sides of the same coin.
Members with healthy discussions were never worried about their rating or earning on mylot. It is the spammers or one/two liners who worried about the number of posts, discussions and the money they earned.
These 'trash' adding members will still be in the same loop. The 'Stars' system won't do any good to them nor it will affect the good members in any way. It is something which you can benefit from if you want to or just stay in the loop and one day retire from mylot saying 'it doesn't pay'!

This new mylot star rating feature has created a comotion today and I guess this topic will stay on for a week and eventually die down (I hope). Yes, this would set an open door to abuse of this new feature. As it is still new, I guess we can only speculate on the effect to the mylot users. Some are happy and some may seem sad about it but I guess this would be very beneficial as this would prompt the users to really respond with good quality posts.

I think it could be good in some respect and bad in others. This is a multicultural community. And the fact is that things that make perfect sense in one culture, make no sense in others. The amount of ethnocentrism varies, but it's always there to some extent. My guess is that over time it will become a measure of a person'd ability to remain polite in different cultures. It may, however, actually increase the overall thought given to discussions and responses. And that's good.

Hello. As a relatively new user (one week and a day), I am still learning the ropes at myLot. I had already noticed the problem with copying and pasting, even by those with less that 500 rating. The new rating system just further baffles by already baffled, feable mind! Your bring up a point that also concerned me from the beginning, if a person decides they don't like you, they can easily follow you on myLot and give you negative ratings on your postings. I also agree with 'Jiminey' who said that the star system reminds him/her of kindergarden stars! I too, thought that when I saw the stars. But,we have to give myLot credit for trying, maybe this will have some inpact on those who don't follow the rules. However, since they seem to be rebels with little conscious about following rules, they may could care less about the color and number in their star.

Well, since this whole thing started today, I've dropped from a 9 to an 8 within just a few hours and barely made any responses during the time (roughly between 5pm to 11pm, give or take), so I'm still trying to figure out how that's all working without taking things too seriously. I'm almost curious to see how people will react when that becomes more noticable. I do worry about abuse and/or being punished for the sake of a having difference of opinion, but if it does good things for myLot, then that's what counts.

Yes, I do think it will be very interesting to watch the ratings of users here at myLot. Also, as you stated, it should help with discouraging the spammers, who we all dislike. I do feel that the myLot administration have heard people like yourself, and are in the process of taking some sort of affirmative action to make this a better community. :)

Yes this is quite interesting. Going by the discussion here it seems that this rating system is based on how other users rate me as a myLot user. If that is the case then there is a cause to be worried. I feel that other than ratings given by other user there are some other criteria also which factors most in the rating system. For example I think one liners are holding the key in this rating system. myLot has been stressing the point that users give quality reply to make a thread useful. So in that direction it makes sense that users should not give reply in yes/no or in one-liners.

yes and i think you will be very happy. i saw your discussion in which you were very unhappy about few users and their spam. well i think mylot has made a very nice development. and due to this i suppose peole who give wuality posts can earn more. offcourse there is some algo for this. other wise why would they develop this. and i think it will be fair. those who dont like this well i think you are not a quality poster then. but yes now you can expect discussion like you know- " posted quality post each of say 20 lines or 50 lines for 10 days or so and still my ratinf is not increasing. but what can we do. we have to tolerate that sh*t from the spammers.

I am very happy to hear about this new star rating. I think that it will help improve mylot overall. I don't think people will really abuse this system. More than likely what it will do is teach people to avoid discussions started by users with really low ratings.
I am looking forward to see the outcome of the stars.

I think the good will outweight the bad on the new rating system. I think the spammers will eventually get tired of it and go away....or at least we can hope!
It is nice to be able to see a user and make a good estimate on the quality of discussion by the rating though.
I think Mylot is listening to us and doing what they can to improve the system. We just need to keep the door of communication open to them and be patient!

Yes, you are right. there may be many abuses, but i think the mylot community is growing at a rapid rate and quality becomes the key issue. it is not practical for them to check each and every post by themselves.
I suggest, to reduce negative usage of this system, the administration pick up a few trusted members of this community and assign them some powers to modulate the content here, may be by deleting the unnecessary posts and reporting abuse. each user can have a different "rank" according to which he has more power than a lower one to rate aperson + or -

The positive and negative was a prominent feature before, as were its abuses, it is just that it is now more visual. Before it effected one’s “user-rating” and in turn their earnings.
If one person has a grudge against another and hunts down all their posts and hit’s the “-” then it’ll be flagged as abuse, and the consistent minuses will not count for anything, as goes the same for the pluses.
Nothing is there however to stop a group of people clubbing together in annoyance with one person and each giving a minus, enough people I’m sure could effect someone’s stature, though one would have to argue they’re obviously doing something wrong to annoy such a large group of people.
It is really just visual 'guidance' for the masses and dare I say braggin' rights, I can't see it stop the spammers/time wasters unless everyone with a certain amount of posts that fails to recieve a good level of rating is kicked off, which might neccessarily be fair.

I don't completely understand it... as what happens if the user isnt rated at all... and no one rates any of their posts? I mean i am sure some people do, but we'll see... i think i'm going to learn to like it haha... it does prevent spamming.,

While some are not rated YET, they will be when they receive enough ratings, so keep rating every response.

I think it is to easily identify the number rather than looking closely. For example, all 7s are a certain color, all 8s another color, etc.

rating a person is very goood..it makes a gr8n competitive environment where each one of us try to improve ourselves in order to get a good rating.....

I have my misgivings, if those who have larger numbers on their stars get paid more than those who have less. It also can be subject to abuse. For example if you do not hold the popular point of view, on a controversial subject, even though your post or response is intelligently written, you may get many negative points and therefore your star number and your pay rate goes down. Someone might complaint about a post you responded to and the whole discussions plus any responses you made is deleted and your star goes down. This is what happened to me. Mylot should warn against ganging up.
