I have a dog and I admit very rarely do I give him table food. I give it to him more as a treat then making a habit out of it. I was always told it's not good to give a animal table food. Do you give your animal table food? or if you against it why?

I tried really hard not to let my dog get any table food. I certainly wasn't going to give it to her. She finally had her first bite of table food by actually getting on the table while we were cleaning up and just like I thought, she now begs for food constantly. Before it was like she was completely oblivious to food and now we can't even step foot in the kitchen with out her being in tow. Table food isnt good for dogs because of the amounts of salt and other preservative. Not to say that all human food isnt good for dogs, that isnt true. We have occasionally woke up to realize that we had no food for the pup and ended up making her a bowl of plain oatmeal or giving her a cooked egg to eat to get her by until we could get to the store. It is also important to be careful about giving your dog food with bones in it. I know that dogs stereotypically LOVE bones but it is too easy for them to choke on small bones in food like chicken.

Very good response and I totally agree with you. I believe dog food is ideal for dogs because of the preservatives in it. However sometimes I do give my dog table food just not very often. I have to even break my mother, She has dogs and give her dogs table food so we we go on vacation to visit she always want to give my dog the same thing. We always argue why it is not good to give dogs table food all the time.

We only give our dog, dog food. He has a real sensitive belly and a lot of things make him sick.
My inlaws on the other hand feed their outside dogs, left overs everynight mixed in with the dog food.

I understand that. Yeah dogs are just like humans when it comes to food, you have to be careful to what you give them to eat.

That's cool, as long as they don't get sick and enjoy it.

I don't think some table food here or there will matter. I would not give a dog anything with pig, liver or chocolate however.
Our dog eats dog food because it is cheap and more predictable expense monthly.
If you give a dog people food do not do it while you are eating it by a table thats how they learn to beg.

If I give my pets table food, it's done on a pretty rare basis. My cat isn't too fond of table food, but my dog loves it. It's pretty much a treat for them to get any type of table food. I'm not against giving table food, but I don't think it should be given all the time.

it is better if dogs are given dog foods because it is studied and designed for dogs. vets don't usually advice us to give our dogs table food. it will lessesn their interest in eating dog food and will more be inclined into eating the food we eat.
however, even if i know this fact, i still give my dog table food from time to time. i just can't help it when she stares at me. i just want her to taste the food i am eating. it's wrong i know. but i just can't help it.

Yes I can understand that. I've trained mine not to ever be at the table when I eat. But every now and then I will give him a little treat...thanks for your response...

I am agianst table food, i prefer dog dry food because its more balanced for them than table food. You have to be careful to give them balanced food otherwise you' ll have health problems as they grow older. Dogs can become overweight etc.

Yes. But some people make it a habit to just give it to them. The sad thing is when you try to ween them off table food to regular dog food...

I have been known to feed a friend's dog with table food because it would sit there and beg and beg. It is so hard to refuse a begging dog for that long! *laugh* And my friend's family already fed that dog with table food, anyway. But I do believe that it isn't the best option. Plus it isn't good to feed a begging dog because it just encourages them. But again, it's so hard to resist.. lol ^_^
