Are we Americans ready for a female, black, or Latino president?

Are we, or is putting a woman or a minority as one of the two big parties' presidential candidates an instant ticket to political-suicideville? I ask because I heard this topic on the radio today as well. I would think we might be, but to be honest, I've been born and raised in Southern California, and have lived here all my life, and SoCal is obviously a little more progressive than many other places in the USA, and I'm not sure if said other places are ready for a black, Latino or female president. I would have no problem voting for a black or Latino candidate - my vote is based on what that president can do for me and my country, regardless of race. I would vote for a female president too, if I was sure that she could do a good job in the white house. Generally I'm mostly Republican in leanings, so if said candidate is a Republican, they will not be any less likely to get my vote just because they are not a WASP.

Unfortunately, I do not think so. As a a conservative white male, I would easily vote for a candidate regardless of race or gender as long as they were qualified and fit my ideology. I do not think it is appropriate for the other factors to figure into a vote, but unfortunately they do. There are too many people who do not share my opinion and therefore would quickly shoot down a minority candidate.

i can see a situation where America could see a presidential election between mrs clinton and ms Rice, wouldnt that make an interesting debate. I hope it doesnt prove to be a judgement by race or minority status but i feel it might

I don't think the country is ready for that yet. Let's face it, the men wouldn't take the woman seriously. We still take a back seat to the men especially with our jobs. I wouldn't care what race they are it all depends on their platform. What is important to them? If they can run the country without these stupid special interest groups, I'm all for it. Someone has to turn this country around, it is going down the tubes. Okay, I'm having a blonde moment here, what is WASP?

WASP is White AngloSaxon Protestant I'm blond too, and I don't take a back seat to anyone who is less competent than me. That doesn't mean that I am aggressive but when I worked I held several positions where I had been the first female incumbent, and I was also the first woman to become a manager where I worked. I was watching a political discussion program where the discussion was Hilary or Barak (spelling?) I thought it was amusing that they focused on the fact that much of Hilary's latest press clippings focused on the fact that she is a mother. The comment made was that in the current political environment being a part of a minority group is now carrying a lot of weight with voters. Apparently this is the new order. Color trumps gender but motherhood trumps everything.

People should vote based on competence and integrity, rather than skin color. African or Latino president? Not just yet, but the day will surely come.

I certainly believe it is possible and I hope when it happens, it is the result of a candidate with good ideas rather than someone being elected just to show we are not prejudiced. This may sound strange to many because of the traditional stereotyping we do, but I think the first minority president is more likely to be a conservative rather than a liberal because I think it is easier for a conservative and their supporters to run a campaign based on issues unrelated to gender, race, or color. Liberals for so long have made this such an issue in criticizing conservatives that I think they would find it hard for it not to be the central theme of their campaign even if the candidates themselves tried to be less single-issue-oriented. Once elected, however, it will be a very difficult task for the first woman, black, or latino because everything they do will be judged on that basis. Well, anyway, we may have a chance to find out next year.

I hope all Americans were thinking just like you. You know for all of us, not only the Americans, the choice of a president (a leader) is very important and must be done wisely. But unfortunately due to traditions and narrowminded reactions we were tought to have we usually elect nothing but creeps and loosers.

as far as i see it, it really wouldnt hurt to have 1 of the 3 in office. Its always been white wealthy men in office and apparently they havent done the greatest job in the world. Im not saying a latino, woman or african american could do better but it sure as heck wouldnt hurt to find out.at this point in time. I for one would like to see a woman in office..no offense to the men here but i think we're a bit more level headed and rational... maybe something will happen in 08'..who knows

i am not an american, but planning to immigrate, but as far as i see on television, read in the papers and hear from my friends settled there in america, there is so much racial unrest there which is slowly growing that it is going to be difficult for people of other races and cultures to live peacefully in america....... so the answer to the question that are americans ready for president of another culture id definitely no, it may cause civil disturbance and may lead to mass unrests in the country......

I'm Canadian and we have had one female Prime Minister. Anyhow, your question reminds me of a song by Morrissey. "In America, the land of the free, they said, and of opportunity, in a just and truthful way, but where the President is never black, female or gay, and until that day, you've got nothing to say to me, to make me believe."

I am not american but I can see your point. I can't see any reason why not, as long as the person appointed knows what they are doing and you do not get to that stage in your career without that. I don't see why being a woman should be different, Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister in England when I was growing up and managed as well as any man even wth a family to bring up. I cannot see why the colour of someones skin should make a difference either. If Britain could do it all those years ago, surely most modern Americans would never even think further than best person for the position. Whats WASP?

Firstly I am not an American and so maybe I am not qualified to answer this one. However it does seem to me that if the citizens of America are not ready, then it is time that they got ready. If for some reason you do not want someone of this colour, gender or racial background then vote. I would however like to think that they person who is elected is chosen for their ability rather than anything else. Many other countries have had females as their leader in the past, so I sort of find it amusing that the USA which is such a democracy hasn't. Kind of makes you wonder a little bit, but then again many American citizens do not vote but complain about it after. Unlike Australia where it is compulsory to vote at all Federal, State and local government elections once a person has been registered to vote. The voting age here is 18 and yes most people do register to vote then. Shall be interesting to see what happens but I doubt seriously that someone such as you are describing would get as far as the nomination stage. :)

I do not have a problem with our next president being any of those three. I think our country needs a change and having one of those three would be fine with me, though if they are Latino I would hope they would speak English. I think a female president or a black president would be more likely to happen than a Latino because of the language barrier and because of the illegal immigrant situation.

I think it depends on the climate of the country. If the war is going badly and the democrats have a woman or a minority on the ticket that represents change, the country could just well do that. After all, who would have thought that GW could have been president, and he would not have been if Bill had kept his pants up. Post 911, America is much more sensitive to life, and fearful of terrorism. Most of us feel that more should be spent on protecting ourselves here at home. History will judge, but at the moment, Bush got a tough row to hoe.
