I don't think I treat my older child any differently the the younger child. If I do, I expect to be told because I don't ever want to treat them differently.
My older child has special needs that require more help then what my daughter requires but we do something special with our daughter when the older child is at school.

Nowadays there are not much discrimination between the elder nand younger child because it has become a trend "Small family happy family". Olden days when there were more than 2 childrens, the parents used to love the elder one or the youngest. Also parents love towards the children may differ based on the approach of the childrens. Ideally speaking there discriminations is natural and based on the childs approach and may be if a child is suffering from some health problem the parents need to give more attention to that child.

There shouldn't be any competition at all. Each child is unique and special in their own ways. I have 2 children, one doesn't need to get attention..her outgoing personality gets it anyway. But the other one (younger) always seems to be in competition with the older one. I talk to them both and remind them I love them both . I don't show favoritism at all. If anyone should complain it should be my older child, because she does everything as she is told and she gets rewarded appropriately. However, the younger one gets a little something something just because I (the parent) am a softy. I have seen other parents show favoritism and that is wrong. That creates insecurity in a person.
