My daughter is 9 years old and has ADHD. She is on Concerta. There has been alot of improvement in school, she socializes more, and she is not as violent. I am concerned about long term side effects, Will my child be hooked to this med? Need info!

Hello,
My son has ADHD, and I can tell you that I do not believe that the kids will be hocked at the med. But I believe they have to be taken this as long as they need. My son´s behavior went from bad to god. My son´s issues in school improved and we never thought he would be able to start high school with passed grades in math, Swedish, and English. But he did. My son have always loved going to school, but since he did not do well before we got the med and a diagnose he was feeling bad and were always angry.
Today he is in his first year of high school. He are not hocked at the med, but if we do someday forget to take it. I can ashore you it is noticed. That is how well the med works.
Hope your daughter will do great.
Have a nice day

My child is on Concerta and is 9years old as well. There is sufficient research out there to show well enough to make me happy that concerta is perfectly safe. I have asked my son's doctor about the long-term effects of giving a child stimulants. He says that adhd stimulant meds are considered stimulants because of the way they act in the brain - they stimulate inhibitory circuits, in other words, they turn on the brakes. ADHD stimulants do not act like stimulants in the rest of the body. They do not raise blood pressure and do not raise resting heart rate. Other stimulants like caffeine do. My son was nine at the end of September, 2006 and is 5'2" tall. I again asked the doctor if the meds could be causing him to grow more than he would otherwise. His answer was 'absolutely not' and he again reminded me of the description of adhd meds being stimulants and acting in the brain and not the rest of the body. Best of luck to you!

My daughter is 17, and was diagnosed with ADHD when she was 6. She has been on Adderall XR for several years now, and it has worked wonderfully for her. So far there have been no side effects or medical issues resulting from the medication....we have bloodwork and EKGs every six months to keep an eye on things. As far as "hooked" on it....my daughter will be taking it for the rest of her life, just like a diabetic would be taking insulin. It's a medication that her body requires to function normally. If that constitutes being hooked on it, then the answer is yes.
