Grocery Baggers

Grocery Bagger - Grocery bagger, packager
United States
January 12, 2007 1:20pm CST
When I go grocery shopping I try to put my items on the conveyer belt, in an order that makes sense to me. For example, cold/frozen items together. I take the time to do this. I'm using this site to vent a little. I cannot stand it when baggers use their own random methods and do not keep my cold stuff together. Don't they realize that I put them that way with intent to keep the cold foods together? Does it take a rocket scientist? I wouldn't think so. At first, I thought it was young workers that don't do the shopping for their households. But, now I've come across adults that don't even do this. I mean, if it's wintertime, I don't care too much. But, when it's warm or hot out, I'd prefer to keep cold w/cold to kind of keep them in a "refrigerated" state. Anyone else share this opinion?

Flower - Yellow flower in bloom
Yes, this is a habit of mine also and makes perfect sense! I really got upset when I had a clerk put an insecticide I had purchased for the flowering bushes in a bag with food. Go figure! I promptly corrected her and asked her to please rebag those items.

sometimes, common sense is no longer common these days, huh? they should be trained by their managers and make sure that they are bagging the right things together for the customers.

I totally agree. I do the same thing. I always pull out all the frozen or cold things and put them on the belt first, then take out the boxed items and so on. I think they sometimes just don't get it, or think that it doesn't matter.... I shop at Walmart more than anywhere else for my groceries and I use the check out where you can scan your own groceries. That way I am the one bagging them. I get out of there a lot quicker that way.

Wow, I shop at Wal-mart mostly too. Sometimes I use the self checkout, but for me, it usually ends up more frustrating due to "dumb" computers. But, I agree, either no common sense, or they just don't care too much. Thanks for responding.

I so agree with you. We just moved and now we shop at a super walmart for groceries. I have NEVER seen such terrible baggers. Maybe it is because the checkers do the bagging, I'm not sure they are even trained. They are horribly slow, and do all kinds of weird stuff. They sometimes put only ONE item in a bag, and they put cleaning supplies with food. ARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGG..... They get pissy at me because I am forever switching the stuff they are bagging, and adding stuff to other bags. They will just set the eggs separate without bagging them, what am I supposed to do, PUT THEM IN MY POCKET!?!? LOL, such a little thing, but when I put the groceries on the conveyor, I do put the meat together, hoping to have it all in the same bags, not the produce. I like the frozen stuff together too, we live 30 minutes out of town, I want the stuff to stay frozen. I put the produce and eggs and chips up on the conveyor last, so hopefully they get on top of the bag. You are not alone.

I tried to teach one of them who was totally incompetent, but she got pretty upset so I just shut up and did it myself. I actually told her to let me do it. LOL, I am pretty shy, can ya tell!

Hey, why not put the eggs in your pocket? It's ok if bleach gets on your kid's cereal, right? Let's start a "common sense bagging" course!

I agree with you. In the last 10 years "customer service/care", has gone down hill tremendously. I used to work for Acme....they put everyone thru "Customer Courtesy College", and I earned a pin I wore on my nametag, for successful completion....I also worked at another grocery store called Buehlers, and they also have a very rigourous customer service learning program....both programs were mandatory and essential to you keeping your job. We learned bagging groceries, and were taught exactly what your venting about.....not necesarily putting the groceries in the bags in the exact same way they came down the conveyer belt, but to keep cold things with cold things, cans at the bottom, a few lighter things on top.....Oh lets talk about not smashing the bread!!!! I get really mad when a bagger has put my bread....four loaves, in one of those plastic bags, and it gets smashed before you have even left the store.....I had to tell a teenage boy, that I was not going to take that bread home....you shoved 4 loaves in one bag, and now trying to put a pack of buns on top.....the bag is only so big....and now look, it's all smashed....I cant have that....so I got new bread, and buns, and he was flustered....but I apologized to him...I said...put yourself in my shoes....why is everyone in such a hurry, are we on some sort of timer in the grocery store....I know no one wants to wait in long lines....but wouldn't those few extra minutes it may have took to think about the person at the register buying the food....use common sense.....what would you like if someone else was bagging your stuff! Thats why I like Aldi's and Save-A-Lot, you bag your own stuff, but then you have to worry about the cashier who acts like she's so much in a hurry and throws all your stuff in the cart....and then asks "how did you get all that stuff in just one cart, as she pulls up another cart to complete your order"...I reply..."I had it stacked in there nice and neatly, so things wouldn't get smashed and broken".....it's another sign of our times....our world is becoming faster, and the people in it always act like their racing......hurry up and get done....what is everyone in such a blessed hurry about?

Hi Kscott, you're definitely right. It's like everyone is so rushed. It's sad. People need to try to arrange their schedules so they can take a little time and do what they need to. People would be more pleasant. I enjoy my life more when I'm not so rushed.

oh my lord what a great discussion peice.. the baggers at the store i shop at are just UNbelievable!.. ivehad tomatoe soup (made by my fresh new tomatoes by the way!) in the bottom of my bags, scrambled eggs!, squished bread!, crushed open boxes, and even bags so over packed that upon transfer to my trunk i ended up chasing canned goods all over the parking lot!.. its absolutely ridiculous!... whats worse is that i WORKED inthat store for 3 years when i was younger, and mly 17 year old brother works there now!. and even after SPECIFIC instructions to the bagger the STILL screwit up!!! i mean dryer sheets with my BREAD!! cmon now.. bout a year or so ago i just gave up on them all together and after working there as long as i did when i was younger, i learned how to do it right,.. most of them see me coming now and just step aside as ive said before "ill do it myself thankyou!~" and thats just what i do..i dont mind it!, it doesnt bother me! i actually prefer it!..now i know that when i spend $200 at the grocery store, when i get home i have $200 worth of USABLE groceries instead of $180 or LESS!

i cant stand grocery baggers even the people on the checkouts ask if you want a hand with your packing i always say no i learn how to pack bags properly when iwas in school and i can tell you most of these baggers dont have a clue especially putting things like shampoo and bleach in with food stuff. i alway like to pack my own bags and infact i am quite good at fitting things in spaces :)

I also get very frustrated with this. I dislike when they put my fresh bread in the bottom of the bag and the squash it by loading tins etc in on top of it. I decided a while back that I had had enough of it, and when I saw them doing this, I would tell them to repack my groceries or I would hold up the queue while I repacked them myself. In Ireland now, we no longer get bags in the supermarket unless we pay for them, so we have to bring our own bags and do our own packing. I much prefer it this way.

Wow... maybe someone should teach a "baggers training course"
• Canada
13 Jan 07
They absolutely SHOULD give training on how to bag properly. They train the heck out of the cashiers because they are going to handling money but the baggers often seem clueless. Where I live, it's very popular for sports teams, civic groups, schools, etc., to "fundraise" by bagging in stores. Not always grocery stores, either; even department stores. I have actually done this once with my daughter's school. One of the conditions of being allowed to fundraise is that you also have to clean up the carts... including bringing in the ones that people leave outside near the doors to the store. It's hard to supervise the kids and be outside chasing carts. Anyway, a lot of times, you're talking about kids who are MAYBE 10 years old? They know nothing about bagging groceries or anything else. They just grab bag after bag, throw in a few items, and literally drop them in the cart or basket. I try to be supportive (it's either this or they're asking me to buy chocolate bars, you know?) but I don't appreciate my groceries being bagged by a child. They will sometimes have a parent paired up with each child and that can help but not always. It's worth shopping at a "bag your own" store rather than having to deal with it, I find.

here in the philippines, particularly in well known grocery stores, grocery baggers were trained to pack the groceries well. like put toiletries (toothpaste, soap, shampoos and even detergents, etc). they also put in another bag the cold frozen stuffs. vegetables are separated, too and other regular grocery items. it's better that way. less stress for the customers. i hope grocery baggers in your place practive it, too.

When me and my hubby go shopping, we also do the same, all frozen stuff in one bag and all the toiletries in the other bag. But here in the UK, we have to pack our shopping on our own, you've got a choice if you're going to use the "bag for life" which is a recycle scheme here and you get a point converted into cash by end of month/quarterly then you can just use the ordinary but bottom line is, you can take your time(considerable time) packing all your groceries the way you want it.

I know how you feel. Not only do I want the cold items kept together for that reason, but I find , now that I am older by the time I do a big grocery shopping and load and unload the car, I may not feel like putting everything away as soon as I get home. If all the items that need to go in the fridge are together I can just do those right away and wait until I've rested to do the rest. I have found that the more upscale stores in our area do train their baggers to have these considerations--they will put greeting cards in an extra little bag to keep them from being soiled, that kind of thing and I believe that if you are able to gear your shopping to match their sales (rather than paying their full prices for everything) it really isn't that much more expensive to shop in these places than it is to go to the 'discount' stores. Your convience has some value too. Cheap isn't always a bargain.

I know what you mean, it has happened to me so many times and I feel so frustrated!I don't know why those people don't take a little time to sort things before bagging it, I mean we've done most of the sorting already but it might have got mixed up when the items were getting billed. I went grocery shopping yday and was so irritated when shampoos and soaps were in the same bag as frozen peas..!!! The tomatoes and bananas were over the cilantro (it was totally squashed by the time I got home!) Good lord, is it too much to ask for??
• United States
12 Jan 07
No, it's not too much to ask for. Especially when most customers, put their items on the belt with some kind of order. I know I do. It's probably more difficult for them to rearrange the items THEIR own way. Hmmph; I'm annoyed!

I don't have that problem at my grocery store. My bread and eggs are in seperate bags and they hand them to me to hold or put in the cart myself. They put everything together that goes together. I just get everything out as fast as I can because it's always busy. What I don't understand is bagging a bag of potatoes.

you would think for how much we pay for groceries we could at least have our groceries packed properly even the bags dont hold up because they stuff them i have had a bag break on me so many times

I agree the cashier should had group item of similar temperature together. I don't have this kind of problem since I shop at no frills. They don't provide bags for free, you have to pay for them. So usually I end up using the cardboard boxes they provides for free. I just dump everything in there. *Try this next time*: take one of those plastic bag at the fruit section. ( usually in a roll, thin white transparent bag) and put all cold item in it. Put others items on the conveyer belt as usual, and put the whole bag(cold item) on it as well. The cashier will most likely scan the bar code thru the bag instead of taking them out. That way you can keep your item together.

I have that problem all the time. One of the grocery stores I visit is an hour away, so it's bad when the frozen stuff is not all together. I put it in order for them already, like you do. It even comes out in order correctly most of the time, when it comes off the belt to the end. This is why I like those self check out things. Bag your own stuff how you want it. My parents hate those though because they say self check outs are costing people their jobs.

I couldn't agree with you more. I find this all the time, and it frustrates me to no end. It also makes things so much easier when unpacking the groceries that one bag goes here, one bag goes there, and so on. I think they should be trained a little better.

They are trained in Australia. They are not allowed to mix types of products. Cold things must be separate. Cleaning items must be separate from food items etc.

I think that it is great that you try to help out by placing your similiar items together! You would think that the baggers would see this and would take appropriate measures to place such things together as they bag your groceries up. I am sorry that not all of them do :/ One solution, I suppose, is to go to groceries that allow you to bag your own food. We have a few of those around here. I really would prefer for someone else to bag my food because I'm not really adept at doing it quickly, and being shy I hate to feel like I am holding people up *laugh* But I can see your point about keeping the cold foods together. I hope that you can find a place with better grocery baggers! *laugh*

Absolutely agree!!! AND it's best to keep household products away from food products. I can't stand going to store and they just throw everything in the bag. I end up standing aside after I pay and rebagging everything....tetris style! hahhaa...
