Did you know...

Did you know that we are supposed to be afraid of small insects and spiders because we can't see their eyes?! Supposedly, it goes back to a theory of the predator and the prey. Since we can't see its eyes we don't know what way it's facing and that 'prey' instinct kicks in... Now I don't know about you, but 1) I don't like them cos they're just plain creepy/horrible looking (!) and 2)I don't think a small spider/insect is going to over-power me any time soon!

I don't know what the reason is, but I am just scared of bugs in general. Ants and flies don't bother me,but bees, wasps, and other flying ones have me running for the door, and spiders...oh my spiders, have my heart almost stop beating!! I am petrified of those 8 legged ugly creatures, and have always been, and unfortunately, I think i will always be!

I personally am afraid of spiders (arachnophobia) i know that they are just small harless creatures and i cant stand them being near me but when such one crawls on me without being seen by me coming - i start to panic. Although i dont see anything bad in other insects which for me are harmless and good for environment :)

ah but spiders are great too, they keep flies at bay, and i'd rather have a spider in my room that a fly. If a spider crept up on me i'd be pretty freaked out too!

A lot of these critters have hundreds of little eyes on each of their two 'eyes'-- that would scare the sh!t out of me if I saw it up close, like a horror movie made real! I don't WANT to see these dudes up close!

Who knows, in the future there might be super giant sized bugs and you might need more than a swatter to fend them off!

Though at least you'd be able to see which way it was looking! lol!

Wow! That's a really interesting / neat theory. I had never heard it before. You never know what new things you are going to learn here on Mylot! *laugh* I agree that not being able to see these creatures' eyes doesn't help. Maybe it is part of _why_ we view them as looking 'creepy'. I really am not that freaked out by some bugs. Others I am not too fond of. Spiders I can definitely do without. They do really make me nervous. LOL.

Thats an interesting theory, but does it always hold? For instance, i guess every one will be afraid of a snake - more so after seeing its eyes! Where did u learn about this theory?

Well to me i am not afraid of small insects but hugh insects yeah, that freaks me out because those are the kinds that carry some kind of diseases with them or they can insert some can of lethal fluid inside of u that could harm u greatly or even kill u but the small kind, i'm not afraid of them because u can step on them and easily kill them. As to that u're much bigger than they are so it would be a little hard to harm u but they are just as afraid of u as u are of them. so there is not really a prey or predator thing going on. u just have to have the heart not to be afraid of them. even if they can climb on u.

I don't like them either but I have to admit Emisle it is scary that you can't see their eyes as it is always the eyes that tell what kind of a mood the Animal is in

To be honest, I'd never want to get that close to see what kind of mood they were in! lol!

ha ha That is very interesting! I don't like spiders or any other insect that bites. I don't have a problem with lady bugs and I can't see their eyes. LOL I don't like spiders because they are creepy, crawly, hairy, ugly, appear out of nowhere, crawl in places you have no clue of, and bite!!! Ticks!! They burrow they head in your skin! And some carry Lyme disease...very scarey. I don't know about that theory. I mean, I am not scared of a Rolley Polley and I cant tell which way they are going until they walk. ha ha But it is interesting still though! I will probably have that pop in my mind from time to time when I see a spider now. LOL

I don't mind insects and spiders as long as they DON'T come near me! If i'm in a room and they're at the other end than it's all good!..:)

I agree with you but I'm still creeped out by them so I still smash them. Cockaroaches espicially their sick looking. I don't believe I'll get overpowered too but I might get bitten.

Never heard that theory before but it is interesting. I have never liked bugs. I have had two bad experiences with them. When I was a kid I was at my sisters and we were playing hop scotch outside and a big spider got into my binder. Later when I was inside I turned the page and there it was. I screamed and honestly didn't think about picking it up outside so I thought her house was full of spiders. LOL I didn't sleep for the whole week I was there. Then my second one was when I was 20. We lived up north on the lake and we got hit with Gypsy Moths. Not sure if you have ever heard of them. They apparently come out every seven years but I have never seen them since. They spun webs and there were webs literally everywhere. If you went outside they would cover you. You had to walk around with a broom shooing them away. They were all over the sides of the houses and even in piles on the roads. People were getting in accidents. It was a contamination. Seriously! Anyways thanks so much for bringing this topic up cause now I'll probably have nightmares.

That doesn't really work for me. I'm not afraid of creepy crawlies. Interesting theory though.

I dislike all tiny bugs too. I just get so creeped out because they could be crawling all over things that you eat off of, etc.

Well, I think that is an intersting theory. However, that is not the reason I'm afraid of them. I'm scare because I always think they'll bite me and kill me insteadly.
