Telecheck Nightmare!

Have you noticed how more and more retail stores are using Telecheck or other services to verify checks before they'll accept them? I can appreciate why they would do this, because it seems like there are a lot of people out there who write bad checks habitually, but let me tell you about this horror story of mine.
A few years ago I had checks turned down at Sam's Club, Walmart and JC Penney, even though I have NEVER bounced a check in my whole life. Each time I was given a little slip of paper with a number to call Telecheck to find out why my check was declined, but every time I tried to call them I would get caught in an endless computerized loop and never get to talk to a human being. Although I was annoyed by it, I just pretty much stopped writing checks in retail stores, paying only with cash or check card.
In a separate story, I have long since forgotten the PIN number for my check card, so I always use the card as a credit instead of debit.
Well, the other day I finished work a little early and had more than an hour before I had to pick up my son from school. I went into a Dollar Tree store and picked up a couple of things I needed and many more that I didn't need but found interesting. Total purchase, $23.98. I had seen a credit card logo on the door (or so I thought), but it turns out that this store only takes debit. They cannot process a credit card unless it's Discover and I don't have that card. I also didn't have any cash. The cashier suggested a check, and I was anxious about it, but I went ahead and wrote a check, and sure enough it was declined with a little slip of paper with a number to call Telecheck.
This time I called and actually got through to a human being, who looked up my information and said that my check was declined because of a $264 bad check written to Frederick's of Hollywood in 2002! I have NEVER shopped at a Frederick's of Hollywood store and certainly not in the fall of 2002 when I was nursing my newborn son. And, I have never never bounced a check anyway. The girl on the phone was pretty snippy and kept insinuating that I "must have forgotten" and she gave me a fax number to send a copy of my driver's license and a cancelled check so that they could research it.
The more I thought about it after I hung up the call, the madder I got. I ultimately called back and got a different operator, who thankfully was not at all snippy. I told her that I had thought about it since my previous call and that since they were the ones with bad information tied to me I thought it was up to them to show me what they had and why they were holding it against me. She put me on hold for several minutes and came back to say that she was able to pull up a copy of the check itself and it didn't even have my name on it. It must have been some kind of keying error when whoever wrote this bad check was being put into their system. Supposedly it has all been fixed as of end of business yesterday, but I am waiting to receive a letter that she promised me to document that there was something bad tied to me in error and that I am being removed from their bad list.
I was very thankful to finally get this handled, and I can appreciate that mistakes can be made, but I am still pretty ticked off about the whole experience. Because of one person transposing numbers and tying me to a bad debt, I have been embarassed in all of those retail stores and virtually unable to write a check in a retail store as a result.
Has anyone else ever had anything like this happen? How do you feel about it?? DO tell!

Wow! That's awful! I can't say that I've had that problem (thankfully). I rarely write checks anymore for anything. I think my hair dresser is the only person that gets a check from me. Everything else is done with my debit card. As far as bills go, I do those online.
You did the right thing to make them tell you what they had on you. I would have been nervous faxing them my DL and checking info over to them. They didn't sound like they were too bright and then who knows what would have happened to your information.

At first I thought my only option was to fax my DL and prove my case, but then my husband helped me realize that the onus was on them to prove the integrity (or lack thereof) of their data). Also, the telecheck slip has a statement on there saying that the consumer has a right to receive a copy of the records that are being held against them.

I used to work in a retail store and we used telechek.. it was a nightmare for us too. Customers would get very upset that their check would be declined. Some called telechek right away, some said they would call later. There were some instances where a customer had a bad check that they paid off, but then it was not reported to telechek that it had been paid. And some instances where their spouse had a bad check out that they did not know about. Yours is the first I have heard where it was keyed in wrong, but I am sure that happens.
I worked as a manager for a payday loan company and we used to report bad checks to telechek if we were not able to collect on them within 30 days. When we reported them, we had to fill out a form that had all of the check information and include a copy of the front of the check and fax that to telechek. They would key it into the system. Then when we finally received payment, we had to fill out another form with another copy of the check requesting that the person be removed from the telechek system.
It usually took them about 5 business days to get the info updated. Sometimes, telechek would be running behind and customers would call or come back to our store to get it straightened out. In those cases we would fax telechek again and call them on the customer's behalf and have a rep take care of it right then.
I hated using telechek cause it was a pain.. But I
understand why its used. However I think they need to revamp their operations some so that fewer mistakes get made, and people don't have to get irate to get the problem handled.
In your case, I would have not left the first store until I had telechek on the phone. The rep that declined my check or their customer service department would help me get through to a live person from the get go.
Well, that may not be true.. the one retail store I worked at we did not call for them. They had to call. But we knew how to get through to a live person and we would tell them what to do.
Personally, if I knew that I had never bounced a check and someone was telling me differently, I would not have stopped until I got a hold of somebody.

I think that the whole reason the stores use this service is that they can just hand someone a slip and say that they have to talk to telecheck and not them. In any case, in the times it happened to me, I was not given any opportunity for conversation, just handed a slip and told to contact them myself.

I use to work at a convience store & we was suppose to use telecheck but most of the time we didnt. One time a guy had over $200 in diesel (he filled up 2 simis i think) anyway he's company check wouldnt go through telecheck. He had no cash on him. We couldnt let him leave the store and take a chance on not comeing back. My manager was really mean to him & told him that he wasn't leaving until he found a way to pay for the fuel. he called his company, but they couldnt send someone down to pay for it because they were located far off. Of course he didnt have the money to pay for it nor did the other truck driver. Finally after 30 minits my manager left. So I wrote down his lisence plate numbers & made a copy of both truck drivers Id's. I told him that I got off work in 5 hours. He had until then to come back and pay for it. (Because before manager left she said that if he left it was comeing out of my check.) As I was getting ready to leave & not to mention mad because he wasnt back yet, he came in. he had to go to his company and get the cash from his boss to pay for it. But the good part was he gave me $50 for being nice to him and trustin him. The company had no idea why it was declining there check.
My sister can't get a check through telecheck either. Her husband (whose now fixin to be an ex) had written bad checks before they met. She put him on her account so it blocked there checks. Even when she went to a differant bank and didnt put him on the account, they still wont go through because they associate her checkin account with his.
Another story....I wrote a check at the store that i worked at at the time. A few days later, my boss told me that i had a returned check. My stupid bank had marked on it that my account was closed and returned it. I had to pay $100 to the store to cover the check, pick it up & some other bull crap fees. I went to the bank they said it was a mistake & they was sorry but the couldnt pay back the $ that i had to spend to pick up the check even though it was there fault. I was mad to say the least. But the owner of the store paid me back the $100. It had nothing to do with telecheck but it still pissed me off.
it looks like they would find a way to automatically check to see if the money is in your account (like they do with a debit card) instead of seeing if youve ever writen a bad check.

I see your point, and now that banking is getting faster in transferring money with different technologies and regulations it might work better. However, there's always the case of potential check kiting, by having checks outstanding that will eat up a balance that's still sitting in an account and still writing checks against the same money that's already spoken for... I don't know what the answer is, but I do know that telecheck needs some help in their systems.
Also, way happy for you that the truck driver didn't leave you on the hook.

Good ole' telecheck. Good that they have resolved that and hopefully you will get that letter they are going to send you. Now,what you really need to check is your credit report. Most likely that check is on your credit report. IF so, your going to need that letter so you can send a copy to all three major reporting agencys. If your in a hurry you can buy onine and get instant access. Other wise, you can get a free copy and wait 30 days to receive it.

What a horrible experience! I can't stand the Telecheck process, it seems like a complete waste to me. I don't use a debit card, but checks are really expensive and it just aggravates me how they print out the check in the register and then hand them back to you. Almost all retailers in my area now use this process. Fortunately, I've never had a problem with them not accepting my check, but I still hate the process. Glad to hear you were able to clear it up!

Yikes, that's terrible! I used to use the Telechecks system at my old job. It didn't even work very well and was a hassle to use. Sometimes it would approve a person, and then their check would bounce! You should try entering your complaint at www.complaints.com to warn others.

Customer service can be very annoying, especially with the ones that assume they know everything and the problems must be caused by the actual customer. I rarely use checks in stores though, and none have been declined yet. Glad you got your problem fixed.

Been there done that. Get a debit card...quick, easy and no credit check. I use it all the time. It is also easier to keep your bank balance straight.

well this story you told us is really spooky. But all new systems always have their bad and good sides. It is very likely that someone can make a spell eror while typing in the check - if you were insulted by the lady you spoke to - file a complain. Maybe you can even prosecute them for having a bad informations - you need to contact your lawyer
