How do you start a conversation with a stranger?

The Britishers are always troubled by their inclement weather. But it has its plus point too! To strike a conversation with a stranger, Englishmen usually refer to the weather with a rhetorical question, with something like,"It's going to rain again today!" or "I hope it isn't going to be another foggy day!" What's your say?

You have great bravado, gulshah! Have you ever wondered if the other person might not reciprocate?

If you want the conversation to be on-goning you have to ask leading questions. People (in general) love to talk about themselves (it's human nature). Do you have any children? What are their ages? Boys or girls? where do they go to school? I love your shoes where did you get them? You look like a very smart business man..what kind of business are you in? You get the point. Ask questions that lead the other person into a conversation. When you show genuine interest in them they will be willing to talk to talk with you.

Its nice to see the operative words you used - 'leading questions'! yea, questions that someone would be forced to answer! And show genuine interest when they answer! That would start the conversation!

Just say hi, this usually works realy well at the bus stop when we're all bored and waiting. Or somewhere that a que has to be formed, try the checkout. Coffs Australia, perfect oneday, raining the next

When you say, "Hi!", doesn't the other guy/female size you up? I mean look at you up and down sizing you before replying? or before remaining silent? Dont you think adding something like,"Its boring isn't it?" would add some life to a simple,"Hi"?

Well It depends on the situation, don't feel bad if they don't want to talk and you do. Just move on...but yes usualy there is more to it than just saying hi, adding a subject that is rhetorical sometimes helps...you don't always have to be the conversation starter, just looking friendly helps. Strangely enogh people talk to me all the time. I must admit, I enjoy that I look approachable.

First smile at a person, then wish him and say hello and introduce yourself. Then slowly you can start a conversation. The other person should be free to talk to with you ; he/she shouldn't be busy in other work or talking to somebody. ALways excuse yourself before asking something. Start with clear/simple questions with any vulgarity or affecting the ego of the other person.

What do English women do then? That said being British extends far beyond being English, there's also the Scottish and Welsh and they're usually touchy about "British" instantly being English. Considering I'm English however lacking the 'man' tag so "English(wo)man", exactly what you just said. :P The start of a conversation with weather can lead anywhere, it usually just breaks the silence, the reciever will often reply "Oh me too! I'm going so and so" And instantly in the second line to the conversation you're on your way!
5 Oct 06
Really? That's news to mean! I'm English! I think I should proceed to hit you over the head with something hard now? Ah I'll pass, you're such a nice person! ;)

lackingstyle, are you Irish? My, there is a lot of Irish pride showing in you! Your gender doesn't matter here! I like the way you ended, "...you're on your way!" Thats a wonderful way of expression.

Australia, Queensland Using the weather to start a conversation? interesting, if the weather was brought into a conversation me mates and i would say "it is what it is" and leave it at that. We mostly start a conversation here with "What are you up to mate!" simple but easy to respond to.
4 Oct 06
Sorry, usually starts with G'day as well so "G'day What are you up to mate?"

No body is stranger in this world. It depends how you treat him. I just give a smile. If he reciprocates, I say hello to him. Just pick up a topic or two and watch whether he is interested in conversation. If he belongs to our area (where we live), I go little deeper in the conversation, talking about welfare measures to be taken up in the locality, politics, etc.

You have a good mental attitude. Speaking to strangers should not be a problem with anyone who has a broad philosophy about it!

Here people complain about hot weather in summer and about cold weather in winter (nothing original, I think).

'hello' Before I answer this question, I like to think about, why this thread was created ? And what was the real motive for this question? When I find nothing wrong, immediately I prefer to answer. However I like questions on science and politics but don't ignore other members requests. I'm thankful to mylot for giving such opportunity to share our views with international members.

In Belgium the sad state of political affairs gets us going and Oct 8th are the municipal elections so everyone is riled up cursing the politicians out loud - "did I just say that out loud?" - and anxiously reading their newspapers for a glimmer of hope. Ah but we often have gray skys too...cheers!

There's nothing much to talk about the weather over here in Malaysia. Everyday, its like, "Today is hot & humid" and tomorrow the same thing again and again.

that makes it easier to start a conversation!! You dont even have to make the effort of an Englishman because he has several topics - the rain, the fog, the cold.

I've started plenty of conversations with strangers. It's simple, just go up, say hi, exchange names and finally find some common ground. Then you're on your way to a great conversation.

I think it depends in which country you are ...In Germany it might be way harder to get into a conversation with a stranger than it is here ..Here a smile and a :How are you doing? is enough to start a convo

There are many categories of strangers! The most difficult start is a conversation to somebody who doesn't speak a language you know! What then? The start is a science of sign, gesture, eyes moving, drowing on the sand, picturing, charade and so many!
• India
4 Oct 06
That's another really tough situation, when you dont know the stranger's language!
