Homeless/Jail Sentence

All the comforts of home? - Prison Cell
United States
January 14, 2007 6:34am CST
Our prisons offer the inmates a roof over their heads, three meals a day, a bed, medical treatment, showers, clothing, social activities, etc. If you were old and having to live on the streets would you commit a crime to get a nice warm jail cell?

actually, the prison systems offer you all of this, but you have to pay for it. You have to buy your own hygiene products, clothing such as thermals, underwear, socks, etc., and they charge you if you have to have medical treatment. Usually, if you're not offered a menial wage for working in the system, this financial responsibility is laid on the shoulders of your family. If you don't have family to help you out, you basically do without a lot of things you need. So it actually wouldnt benefit anyone to do this. The better thing to do would be to get involved with a shelter that could help you make a new start.

There seems to be something wrong with our system where we take care of our prisoners better than we take care of our seniors. Is it possible that we not spend as much on looking for ET or for looking for weapons of mass destruction and put that money to our seniors?? Just asking....

If all prisons were made self-supporting, by the prisoners performing work and selling goods to provide for their keep and prison maintenance, there would be tax money available for taking care of seniors etc instead of being spent on keeping criminals.

One old tramp I knew used to do just this. When the weather began to cool off, he would break a shop window just to get himself 3 months inside. He knew, of course, that the insurance would pay for it and he would get looked after well for the winter.

I have heard that some people do this, but we are still at a transition stage. The generation right before me would never do that, because of the social stigma, real of perceived, that they would face. I would, possibly do that, but I would be very particular what crime I committed. I would never hurt anyone, or victimize a small business.

doesnt sound fair to me,but we cant let the prisoners out to be on the streets and be homless and put homeless in jail. Which might be a good solution if we sent prisoners to Sieberia. Would take alot of thought about commeting a crime to get it to a warm place.

That is an interesting proposition. Sounds much better than a homeless shelter. I could collect social security all the while and bank it. In the meantime, the state lets me live rent free. Do I get cable TV and Internet access? And come to think of it, all you good citizens would pay for the whole thing with taxes. If I did a five year stretch, I could save up about $90,000 over that time. Maybe double it or so working on some investments. Hmmm...doesn't sound all that bad. That is, as long as I had nice neighbors.

WOW such a great topic. Sore subject with me, but a great topic. I for one resent that murderers and rapists and baby rapers live under better conditions than the soldiers that are out there protecting my sorry butt!!!. Color TV, work out time and best of the equipments, balanced meals, books, free legal advise, and on and on and on.... blah blah blah with their rights!!! they all make me sick! But in answer to your question NO I would not commit a crime to get in. I don't want to be Bubette's Bunk Muffin !! BLECK!!! The whole system needs to be revamped, it stinks that we have so many homeless but then we make it easy for them to do that. just like the welfare system --Let them stay in the system for their whole lives! I have a friend who has a daughter that has been on the system for 40+ years!!!! and that ladies and gentlemen we pay for !.. Did I mention this was a sore subject with me LOL Great topic,.... I am now stepping off my soapbox.... bow to the left.... bow to the right... I am gone.

There ARE people actually doing this, and here in sweden jail is a walk on roses. They get everything. a warm cell with a tv, radio and all other stuff. cooked meals and also they can do some light work and earn money for other things they need, I hope i will never be alone though, that i will always have someone to help me out when I need to, the same way I am helping people when I can.

Actually, I have thought about that. Not me doing it, but the fact that our jails seem to get really full when the temp drops. I am sure many are doing just that, just so they can stay alive. The shelters fill up rather fast so. As for long time care, yeah I am sure this has been done. Up in years, no family or home. What do they have to lose?

I don't think I'd commit a crime for three hots and a cot. The loss of freedom is just too high a price to pay. I worked for the welfare department once and I think I could probably figure a way to work the system to get off the street that was better than prison. At least I hope I could.

haha i don't know bout that, it's not all great in jail though. it's not a surprise that there's alot of crime, and abuse that is just ignored, even in low security prisons. a friend of my mum's was locked up for 5 months, and he absoluterly hated it, he said it was the scariest time of his life. also i was watching a documentary on people living on the streets a few years ago and it's surprising how many people chose to live on the streets. there were some people who had a warm home to go to but they just couldnt face their family there

Yes they are offered everything, but many are already homeless and that is why the crimes are committed. The shelters and other areas are always full and that is why so many cannot go and stay. Some even have to take it in turns to get to have one or two nights a week in a nice warm bed, where they can shower and have a decent meal. Sometimes they just do a petty crime just so they can get a good night sleep, food given to them just so they can live another 7-10days. The complete system is in a disaster zone and until they see it for themselves, this will continue to worsen. Even our health system is not improving and yet with the population growing, the govt is still cutting back?!?!

No need to think about a crime to have a nice place.Freedom to cell is a nice thing that we must prevent doing a crime ,think about something else that you can improve your life.
