If your local pro sports team wanted a new stadium...

Would you be in support of it?
The issue right now in San Diego is to give the Chargers a new stadium. The city is refusing to let them have it, despite them offering to build it using only their own private money, with no debt to the taxpayers. This is forcing the Chargers to look to the suburbs (Chula Vista, National City, Oceanside), to try to make stadium plans.
Personally, I am in favor, and I think it's ridiculous that SD is so against it. San Diego has recieved huge economic boosts from its other new stadium, Petco Park where the San Diego Padres play baseball at, and SD has major money problems due to corrupt politicians right now. And with the Chargers offering to pay for the entire stadium themselves? Come on SD, get it together. Let em have their stadium.

Qualcomm Stadium needs to be replaced to make money according to the team. I heard the team doesn't want to stay and wants to move elsewhere due to major money issues and a particular person, who I don't wish to name. Personally, if the team doesn't feel its making enough money in San Diego, then it should move. My understanding is all of the money hasn't been raised and why should the city end up spending what they don't have available, which would mean the taxpayers would be stuck paying. I don't want to pay and would vote down the expense quickly.

What is it to the city if they are paying for it. I realize that permits and things are needed, but geez. They won't be out any money, so who cares.

yes if they wanted a new stadium, like my fav team in uk footbal, liverpool, they want a new staidum on the grounds in stanley park however they are nt allowed to build the stadium they want, and due to no building permission have lost alot of money getting people to build a model of the stadium to the clubs needs but also the community, and the local council said no, the club are also going to pay for the stadium from there own money, people need to get a grip, no taxpayers are going to lose out and less likely to gain as they would have more tickets to go see matches there

I wonder if the Chargers success this season can affect the outcome of this issue. They've made it to the playoffs, and got a bye week. If they make it to the AFC Championship game, the Superbowl, or win the Superbowl are they more likely to get permission to build the stadium? What do you think?

I don't think a new stadium is necessary. And I don't think the Chargers will leave San Diego. What's wrong with Qualcomm? I personally like that stadium. The Padres didn't need a new stadium either. I like that stadium better than Petco but I know it was more of a 'football' stadium. Even if the city did have the money togive them they could spend it on other things. But if they are offering to buy it themselves then they should go ahead and let them.

I would absolutely support my team in having a new stadium, especially if they are willing to pay for it themselves. I am shocked that your city is not willing to have a new stadium built even though the team is willing to pay for it by themselves. My teams have already had new stadiums built and had little trouble getting approval. I hope that your team will get a new and better stadium like your Padres did and my Philly teams did.

Since the city owns the land and statium, maybe the city would approve such a project if the Chargers owners were to either rent/buy the land and then pay for its construction. In that way there would be money in the city's coffers rather than a burden on the taxpayers.
I have no info on this subject. One question I would ask is whether the city has any objections of a new stadium built on the same location. By forcing the Chargers to go into the suburbs does that mean that they have not submitted plans for possible locations or if they have does it applied to local urbanization rules. It somehow doesn't sound logical that the city would turn down an offer like that out of hand. There must be something that is holding plans up and that information has not yet leaked to the public.
Football is big business and draws large crowds. Paying admission is not the only expense a sports fan usually has especially if they are out of towners. It certainly boosts the local economy to some extent...a fact I'm certain that any city would take into account of such a proposition.
I wish the Charger fans all the luck and I sincerely hope that they get a new stadium wherever it may wind up.

If I was a football fan, I would support it. If I didn't care about football, I wouldn't care one way or the other. If the Chargers are willing to pay for it themselves, I don't see much of a problem.
You have crooked politicians in your city too? I didn't know this problem had gotten to the west coast...lol. I wonder, is it a national crisis?
Here in Detroit, the Ford family built a great new stadium about 4 years ago. The thing is, it isn't in use year round. There has been some economic benefits, but the city hasn't exactly improved all that much. I don't know if stadiums can be that much of a consistent economic driver. A lot of people do not ever pay attention to sports. Hope it works for you guys.
One last thing, I was saddened to see the Chargers get beat over the weekend. I thought they were going to go all the way this year. At least you have the nice weather to get your through.

I have a problem subsidizing big business and i am a huge sportsfan. The owners are lining their pockets and want us to invest in the business plus pay megabucks to watch the games live. Next we will be subsidizing the athletes salaries directly.

While I agree that the city could be more surportive, I think it is entirely right that the new development should be paid 100% by private money. There are a lot of consideration when deciding where to put a major sports venue , traffic problems , local residents , zoning restrictions , niose pollution ..

I think that the real question is whether they need a new one, although I guess if it is all with private money, then the city shouldn't care. I live near Pittsburgh, and the Penguins have been begging for a new stadium for years. They even want to use the city's money. I guess that if they are able to get the investors for it, then they should be allowed to do it.

I don't know much about the Chargers situation, but why is the city refusing it? Does it have to do with the construction plans or what? Here in Houston, most of our stadiums are pretty new and we've always been in pretty good support of our teams (even though I hated seeing the Astrodome go out of use!) and them wanting new stadiums. I hate that now big business takes over the whole stadium thing and that it's not about the teams anymore, it's about their corporate sponsor for the stadium. But, that's what consumerism does to a country :0)

That is so silly of them. They won't even have to pay for it. I think they should let them have the stadium.

It all depends, some of these deals are quite complex. Even if team owners agree to pay for the stadium, the city or state can have to pay for roads, etc. and there can also be different types of deals for sharing revenue from concessions, tickets, parking, etc.
Is the city government against it or the taxpayers? Has there been a vote on it?

First off, the SD Chargers had an AWESOME season! So sad to see New England defeat them today :(
If the Chargers are willing to pay for it completely, I don't see why the Chargers can't have their stadium. With the recent successes they've had the past two years, San Diego would stand to lose a lot if the team decided to pack up and move to a nearby suburb, like the SF 49ers and Oakland As are planning on doing. Here in Seattle, we have a similar situation. The Seattle Sonics have been lobbying for a new arena for the past few years (we have the smallest arena in the NBA), and taxpayers have adamantly opposed this, even though they agreed to pay for the Mariners and the Seahawks new stadiums. It doesn't help that the team was sold to someone in Oklahoma City, who looks poised to move the team there if a deal can't be reached here. As I see it, taxpayers in SD have nothing to complain about. Why, exactly, are people so riled up over this issue then?

If the football team will pay it, and the city won't pay anything, it should definitally be allowed.
It won't cost anything for the city, it will help with jobs in the area, and the stadium will bring in tons of income for restraunts and hotels in the area.
Especially with the good year the charges are having/had (don't watch pros much) it would really be great for the city income wise. It may bring more traffic, but the benefits greatly outweigh the negatives.
