When I made my first webspace I used Yahoo geocities. It was very easy to set up and the results were what I wanted. There are lots of free hosts about but you might want to give that one a try purely because its so easy to use

My advice is that you start off with by creating a blog of your own first. You can go to Blog.com or Wordpress.com. For an example of a blog you can look at mine :

I am a novice too but we all can learn from each other. There are also free websites from yahoo, lycos, etc. But starting a blog gives you first hand experience before you proceed further. I have also started a website which I hope will be ready by end January. Take a look too :
