Showe Curtain--Clean it or Toss it?

While cleaning my bathroom today I noticed thay my shower curtain needs a good cleaning. I hate cleaning shower curtains almost as much as I hate cleaning toilets. I have come to the decision of just buying another one as they are not expensive. Lets face it if I could buy another toilet for cheap I would just so that I would not have to clean it. Am I strange for not wanting to clean this dirty thing or are there other people like me out there? What do you do? Do you buy a new one or do you clean the one that you already have?

I haven't had shower curtains for many years, but when I did, I threw them in the washing machine with the towels every week. Simple solution. They were never grotty.
For those who have shower screens:
Glass is notorious for getting soap scum which is very difficult to remove. The easy solution here is throw away the soap and start using shower gel.
The first benefit is that shower gel is much nicer, smells great, is easy to use and is better for your skin. The second benefit: no soap scum! The third benefit is that while the shower gel is slightly more expensive, it is cheaper in the long run because you can throw out most the cleaners you used to use in trying to get rid of the soap scum and mould.

Great tip here, shower gel is not something I thought of. I knew how awful soap scum was and terrible to get off of everything but never did think of gel.

I hardly have to clean my screens at all since changing to shower gel. Just a quick wipe over is all they need.

Yeah, that is a really good tip. I never actually put two and two together to realize that soap=soap scum. Duh. I am the new owner of my first shower with doors, so this is all new to me. Thanks for the advice.

I just take my shower curtain and liner down and throw them both in the washing machine. When they are finished I just re-hang them and let them air-dry. This might be a solution because I used to try to stand in the bathtub and clean it but it didn't work very well so one day I thought about trying to see if the washing machine might be easier.

You'll save even more money if you use shower gel instead of soap.
With shower curtains, do you make sure you always leave the curtains closed after using the shower? If they are bunched up in the open position, they will attract mould. Leave them closed and allow them to dry.

I do try to leave curtain closed but it seems that, that is just an impossible task for children.

I am glad that I asked as I had never thought of putting them in the washer. This may save me some money in the long run.

Yes I always cleaned it them I got a bright idea. I took it down and bleached it in the tub. While it was soaking I went to the dollar tree and bought another one. The one I had was much more expensive. So, now I use them both, I use the clean one and throw the dollar one away and replace it. This works for me and is a lt cheaper. You could throw yours away and just buy $1.00 ones when needed.

Excellent idea to have a back up, I only have the one and now I see that I should buy another cheap one so that I can continue to use mine and clean it.

I recently replaced the shower curtains with a good shower door, which I love and highly recommend! But when I had shower curtains, I would throw away the liner when it started to look bad (with the white scale build-up on the bottom or mildew). I always had several replacement liners in the linen closet. You're right, they're not that expensive, and who wants to try to scrub those things clean? It's easier to consider them to be disposable.

Very good idea, I think that I will bring that up to my husband about putting doors in. That would be so much easier.

Actually if you throw it in the washer with bleach, it will come out like new. No scrubbing required!

You can buy shower cleaning sprays. After every shower, you just spray the stuff all over the walls inside the tub, and on the inside of the curtain/liner. You don't have to rinse it off...it just prevents mildew and soap scum from building up in your shower. They even sell one now that hangs from your shower head, and automatically sprays all around your shower after each time you finish showering.

I do use the spray but after awhil it still just looks awful. I have not seen automatic ones, I think I will have to look them up and see how they work.

If you have a HE front loader washer. It is easy to clean it it. I just put it in with a few other things on gentle and it is clean again. No rips or tears. I saw were someone reccomended a shower door instead. That may work great for some people but my Mother in law had cancer and was very weak. Her husband had her in the shower on a shower stool. She fell and got stuck. He had to take the shower door off to get her out. He never did put it back up. If you have an elderly person or a seriously ill person a shower door may not be the best option.

That is something to think about as when my mother has her doctor appointments she will come and stay with us. I am going to give the washing machine a try as most have suggested it here.

while I throw the curtain in the washer, the thing I had trouble with is the shower but am now putting car turtle wax on the walls and this help keep the soap scum and hard watermarks down as they just wipe off so easy just be sure you don't get it on the floor, also use it on the counters as it make them easier to clean too.

I am going to try and look at the dollar store, I had never thought that they might sell them until I started hearing from everyone here that that is where they get theirs.

If you throw it in the washing machine with a towel it'll come out really clean with hardly any work :)
That being said, when we remodeled our bathroom about 4 or 5 years ago I got sliding doors instead and I LOVE them !

I would suggest taking them down and putting them in the washer with some soap and bleach. The bleach helps kill any mold and mildew that has grown on it. Now if it is the very flimsy liner it might not work well so keep that in mind but so long as it's the heavier ones it will wash up fine. Once they are washed rehang up dry but make sure you have it pulled so it's not bunched up. Also to help prevent growth on the shower curtain make sure after it is used to pull it so that is not bunched in any areas, that way it will all dry out. (To me that is open but some might call that closed..so just make sure it's spread wide)

Yes it is one of the heavy clear ones. I try to always make sure that it is pulled but sometimes the kids forget to do this. Washing seems to be the answer here.

Did you know that you can just throw the curtain in the washer? I mean if you are too lazy to do that, I can't help you. I'm not slaming you about being lazy, truly, I understand. I hope this helps.

You can wash shower curtains in your washing machine. Put on gentle cycle and add soap and bleach. Use hot water for the washing cycle and take curtain out after washing cycle DO NOT LET IT SPIN!!! It will be sparkling clean and you can rehang while wet.

We buy the cheap clear shower liners and will spray cleaner on them ocassionally on the areas most prone to soap scum. The Lysol tub and tile stuff in the pink bottle is great for soap scum. But I have given up on scrubbing them and the washing machine doesn't do a great job on cleaning the cheap liners, so I will throw them out and replace them every 4 or 5 months. I do try to shake or squeegee most of the water off when I'm done showering; and someone else mentioned closing the curtains to let them dry afer a shower, this really does help keep the mold from growing.

It's not bad for you to think of buying a new shower curtain, but let's face it. If we all run away from cleaning things or facing our challenges then it won't make much sense. Are you going to keep on buying new shower curtains all your life? That is quite an investment.
I would advise you just wash it, and you will actually feel good that you have done something good.
What do you think?

Buying a new one sounds good to me until I think of how much they will end up costing me every month then every year, so yes cleaning it would probably be better.

The shower curtain liner I have I just toss when it gets dirty. I buy them at the dollar store and keep extras on hand. The cloth curtain I just wash in the washing machine. I agree with you about cleaning the toilet. I hate cleaning the toilet. We moved into a new house a few years ago and this toilet is awful to clean it has all these nooks and cranies.

This is what I am leaning towards. Throwing out the liner, cleaning the clothe curtain in the washer and just make everyone use the neighbors toilet.lol

Since they only cost about 2.50, I get a new one every two months or so. I can't stand the soap scum and mildew. I did try to clean it once a few years ago and it just didn't look clean, so I got a new one anyway. Besides, I like to get a different color everytime.
Funny story, I got a clear one a few months ago and my cat kept trying to jump through it!

cute story, I was thinking about clear I may want to go with another color though my cat would get the shock of her life. You are right for that little amount might as well just buy a new one.

I have washed them before in the washing machine or outside but more often than not, I just pitch them because they're so cheap (and gross). A couple of weeks ago, though, I bought a mildew resistant curtain that cost a little more but will hopefully last a long time too without getting disgusting.

A solution of Baking soda works well at removing mildew and a machine wash can extend its life. Shower screen sare easier to clean - but still need cleaning. If you think you might end up hating cleaning the screen then I would go for the cheap replacement option. If you stuck the curtain in the wash evry weekend then you probably wouldn't need to work about mildew and it would only need replacing about twice a year -it's a pin having to take them down so often though.
