I would say, just having been onstage frequently myself with school groups, that it's mortifying and depressing to get scattered applause. I certainly don't think you should give a performance a standing ovation if it was sloppy or just.. poor, but applause in general is just polite. Even if you didn't like it.
Just my opinion, though. I tend to not clap when I'm in a malcontented mood. Brooding, and whatnot. But that's usually out of spite and I regret it afterwards.

I will defenitely clap because i think its a basic manner to encourage people.Even if the speech as you say may be boring or stupid we have to consider their effort in organising the seminor or anything. We just can expect a adoring speech as everyone is not blessed with that talent to attract people. Finally we are not going to loose anything simply for clapping at the end.

Oh yes. I have been to many childrens' performances over the years and sit there with a glazed look on my face and clap dutifully at the end. What else can you do?

I don’t think there’s an ethical issue for not clapping or applauding after a certain speech or performance because clapping is an expression of appreciation. Naturally, we display disapproval of something through gestures or facial expression. So, for me, it is only proper to show your disapproval, not that you is lazy doing it but expressing what you really feel and besides performers gauge their success through the number of applause they get from their audience. So, I guess this is just normal. :)

as for me, even if i find hte performance boring,i still clap at the end of each performance. maybe because to give respect atleast. and i know that somehow, they put effort in their performance. so, clapping won't hurt me plus i get to make them feel okey somehow.

Yes, I probably would clap. You're right that we probably shouldn't feel obligated to if we truly didn't enjoy what we just saw. But just think if you were the one up there onstage and you received nothing but silence when you were finished. That would feel so bad! *laugh* SO I think that I will just stick with the norm and applaud if everyone else is. It just seems kind of rude not to, no matter what.

it's really not an obligation to clap. but if your really listening to the speaker with what he's been saying, even if it's a boring discussion or speech of how he delivered it, but if you were strike but the message...don't you think there's a need to clap?
