Hubby and I are going to dinner at a friends house and we offered to bring a salad.... The hostess is making some German dish, but she didn't tell me the name of it. I know she's having baked potatoes with it and someone else is bringing a dessert. I offered to bring a salad. The only problem is, the only kind of salad we ever have is the green leafy iceburg lettuce type! lol! I need some ideas on a salad to take to this dinner. Any suggestions?

One of my favorite salads is easy to fix. Just get a bag of prepared salad greens (I like mixes with spinach, romaine...) then throw in dried cranberries (or Craisins) or fresh sliced strawberries, sliced almonds (or Sunkist Almond Accents-yum). Serve with a vinaigrette and optional blue cheese crumbles.

How about a german potato salad? Recipe follows. 7 medium size new potatoes, 3 slices bacon, 1 small onion chopped, 1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup vinegar, 1 tablespoon sugar, 2 teaspoons cornstarch, 1 teaspoon salt. DIRECTIONS Scrub potatoes. Cook in boiling water 30 minutes or until tender. Drain and chill well. Peel and cut potatoes into thin slices. Fry bacon in a large skillet until done but still limp. Remove bacon, leaving drippings in skillet. Tear bacon into bite-size pieces. Set aside. Saute onion in bacon drippings until tender. Stir in remaining ingredients; cook over medium heat until slightly thickened. Add bacon and pour over potatoes. Toss gently. YIELD: 6 servings SUGGESTION: This is good hot or cold. I prefer hot. If you bring it hot in a Crock pot you can keep it hot until serving time. If you want to make more, this recipe easily doubles or more.

A friend of mine used to always bring a salad to my place for our little parties, on a huge platter she would put iceberg lettuce leavesand simply put tomato, cucumber, raddishes, little sweet onions, a little grated carrot then she would put boiled eggs cut in half all around the edge, I loved her salads, they were simple but beautiful.

It's hard to know what kind of salad to suggest, when you don't know what the main part of the meal will be... but you did mention it was German food. How about "tomatensalat" or German tomato salad? You make up the tomato mixture and it can be served on the iceburg lettuce leaves that you usually have anyway :) Ingredients: 5 medium tomatoes, chopped 1 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. dried thyme 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 1 Tbsp. sugar 1 tsp. dried basil 1/4 tsp. freshly ground pepper 6 Tbsp. vinegar 1 large onion, diced To assemble: Mix together the salt, dried thyme, vegetable oil, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, dried basil, pepper, vinegar, and onions. Toss with tomatoes. Chill for about an hour and serve on lettuce leaves. Another one that I've seen on sites for German foods is a shredded carrot salad. The one below serves about 4 people but would be easy to adjust for what you need: Ingredients: 2 lbs fresh carrots 1 cup fresh squeezed orange juice 2oz vegetable oil 3oz white vinegar 1bunch of fresh dill 3 tblsp honey salt and white pepper to taste Directions: Peel, then shred the carrots with a grater. Chop the fresh dill into tiny pieces. Mix all ingredients together and let marinate for 1/2 hour at room temperature to let the flavors blend. Outside of that, you can't really go wrong with a good mixed greens salad. The market I shop at offers what they call a "spring mix" and it contains baby spinach, radicchio, all sorts of lettuce. I mix this in with a head of iceburg (to satisfy my kids, mainly, who don't seem to think salad is salad without it LOL) and top it with your standard oil and vinegar dressing and it goes with pretty well any meal. Have a nice dinner!! :)

I have a recipe for Scoops Tacos. It's like a taco salad. 1 box (4.6 oz) hard taco shells 1 lb lean ground beef 1 package (1.25 oz) taco seasoning mix 3 cups shredded lettuce 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (4 oz) 1 medium tomato, diced 1 cup salsa 1/2 cup sour cream Heat oven to 375 degrees F. Break taco sheels n half, arrange in single layer on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 5-7 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare ground beef with seasoning mix as directed on package. Layer (in order) lettuce, seasoned ground beef, chhese, tomato, salsa, and sour cream on large plate. Serve with warm taco shell halves for scooping.

here is a lovely recipe for you Taco Salad Recipe This is great for big get togethers or for Potlucks. Also you can substitute lean ground turkey instead of beef for a healthier dish 1 head lettuce 1 bottle Catalina dressing (16 - 18 fl.oz.) 1 bunch green onions (scallions) 1-2 big tomatoes or 1 package cherry tomatoes 1 bag nacho cheese plain Doritos 1 can black olives (regular size) 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese 1 lb ground beef or ground turkey 1 envelope taco seasoning Brown the ground beef or turkey, drain. Add taco seasoning as package instructs. While the meat is browning clean and tear up the leaves of the head of lettuce and add it to the bowl the taco salad will be served in. Add the bag of shredded cheddar cheese. Slice black olives into halves or thirds depending on how you prefer them (or if you have some one who wants to pick them out) then and add them to the bowl. Cut up the tomato in to quarters and then halve them and cut them into thirds and add it to the bowl. When using the cherry tomatoes cut in half if preferred and add it to the bowl. Cut up the green onions the bulb (white part) and half of the top or chive part (green part), pending on how much onion you like, then put it into the bowl. Take three-fourths of the bag of Doritos and put it into another bag (i. e. an old loaf of bread bag or Ziploc bag) and crunch them up into about a third of the size of a full chip but you don’t want all small crumbs for chips, then add them to the bowl. Then take your prepared hot meat and add that to the bowl. Finally add about three-fourths of the bottle of Catalina Dressing and mix all the ingredients up till coated with dressing. hope you like it
