Do You Feel It Is Important To Sit Down To Meals With Your Family?

Do you think it is important to sit down as a family at the dinner table, or do you think it's still the "same" to all eat together, but say in the living room watching a tv show together? We try to eat the weekend meals together at the dinner table, but during the week we tend to take our plates into the living room. We all still eat together, but we are not actually sitting and talking to each other -- Do you think this makes a difference in the long run on developing family bonds???

We used to eat dinner as a family every night. It has sort of gone wayward though. We will turn a music channel on the tv in the back ground. I want to get back into the habit of eating together. It is so hard because as soon as I set down to eat the baby usually gets up & needs me.

I know exactly what you meen about the baby. I have a 5 month old that starts to cry now just as soon as I have dinner done. So basically, My husband, brother and 3 year old usually get to eat together while I am feeding the baby. I am hoping this will get better and I will be able to eat with everyone else when the baby starts eating solids.

We've done the music channel to at times during dinner. Watching TV does cut into actual interaction and talking time. Can you have the baby at the table with you? or is that usually nap time?

Yes, I believe it is very important. My family and I hadn't sat down to eat at the table for 2 years, I know that sounds awful, but it is true, When we moved, we just never set up the table. When we set it up, we all sat at it, and we all started getting along a lot better. We also didn't have the TV blaring 24/7.

it makes a big difference. Eating in the living room usually means the tv is on. You eat and watch the boob tube and don't pay much attention to anyone around you. By sitting at the table, you are actually looking at each other and you feel closer, more like a family. conversations tend to flow at the table. If you are watching tv, you usually wait till commercials are on. Its all part of family bonding.

You are absolutely right that supper time is probably the best time of the entire day to get your family together and talk about the days events amongst eachother!!!

yes of course, it so happy to watch a family eating together in one table every meal, not being festive but its a simple way of bonding with your family. Long time ago we're doing the same way but i guess there is really some kind of changes in life. Now, most of the time im eating by my own, my father is not residing here in our rented house, only my mom and baby sister is with me, theyre not separated but the bonding changed a bit little and i think thats just the way it is. Lucky for those family who eat together right, but i dont envy them because inspite of us not eating together every meal, we still find time to be together at day outs and my dad also visited us here in our place.

We try to at least 2 times a week, but with different schedules it's hard. Last night would have been one of the nights for this, but we had to watch the Patriots lose and someone else was sick. The late bus from the school doesn't get to our stop until 5, and then I usually want to take a nape before work, so we squeeze in some quality time over that hour. But if someone else is staying at school later or has to go to work, it makes it difficult.

I think it is important, but as much as we try, we still find ourselves migrating towards a tv. We lately have been turning on the stereo during dinner, and turn off the tv, (you can see the tv from the kitchen at the right angle depending on where you sit). The stereo has kept us in the kitchen, and talking a little more. My family usually pitches in on the dinner making process and serving, and we talk then. LOL, the point of us all eating together is to talk about our days, or something of interest, but we as parents find ourselves telling the kids, to be quiet and quit talking so much so they can finish their dinner before it gets cold (kinda defeats the purpose at times, huh!!) My family always ate dinner together, but we did have various times when we gathered in the living room to eat and watch a show together, and we still talked as well (during commercials). I dont think unless you do the living room thing daily without any talking that it will have a grave impact on your family bonding....but each family has to find a balance that works for them as well. Do you see any difference in the bonding process since you eat in the living room? You are doing this twice a week at the dinner table, so atleast you are bonding that way. Do you talk at all about the show you are watching when you are eating in the living room?

I do think it is important so sit down with the family for meals. Our lives get so crazy and hectic that dinner seems to be the one time we can connect, regroup, and actually communicate. When we sit down for dinner I put on music instead of a tv show. Sometimes I go around the table and everyone has to name the best thing and the worst thing about that day. It's a good coversation starter. You always want to keep the lines of communication open as much as possible.

yes it is important to sit together and have meals, so that each member feels happy and everyone eats with happiness, even if you don't sit on a table but are still in the same room it helps if each one has something to say and answer certain queries or comments then the family bond strengthens otherwise the family members feel neglected and bored and they may not find interest to eat food.

Yes i do think that sitting with the family and having meals. if i talk about myself we as a family find hardly any time to sit and have a meal together. So its very fun to me whenever it is arranged. Various problems can also be discussed over the meals. And the family comes closer.

Well, in my family, we do eat meals together in the dining table. Sometimes the TV is on, but most of the time we dont really watch it. I think it is a good opportunities to really talk to each others, to share the day, to build up a close relationship. Right now, my parents live overseas, but we still have a very tight bond, we chat regularly, they know whats going on my life, and I know whats happening to them daily. I would like to think that all those meals together that we had when I was a kid, helps build up this relationship and this closeness. If you only eat together, but each is busy with the TV, or something, then there would be little or no communication between member of the family, and it does affect on your family bonds and relationships. So in my opinion, it is best if you spend time to eat meals together, talk and discuss things, share your experience for the day, etc2 to help build a strong family bonds.

i think that it's a good idea to have a point in the day where you all gather and discuss the day or watch something together over a meal. It's a good way to feel a part of a group and have contact. Sure every once in a while you all may eat in a separate room, but the tradition is great.

My husband is not always home at dinnertime, but when he is we always sit down together and have dinner as a family. And even when he is working, my daughter and I always sit at the table and have dinner together. I think that even if we don't really talk about anything in particular it is still a good thing for us to be together for our meal. With all of our hectic schedules these days, it is a nice tradition and I do believe it helps to develop a bond.

I don't think it is important to sit down together to have meals with my family. That is because my family has never done that. There are ither ways that we can bond without sitting down to dinner. We shop together, watch tv together, and just hang out and talk sometimes. That seems to work perfectly fine for us.

i dont think thats inappropriate for a family eating together but not talking and its in the living room. how can you exchange stories or talk of something like that?im saying im judging you family..ok..i was just expressing my points of view here. besides how can we respect our meal if were not eating in the proper place. if your in the dining area its nice to be with family eating together, talking, exchanging ideas at the same time enjoying whats in the table and sharing too.
