Recently A five-year-old girl was mauled to death by a dog at her home near Liverpool on Monday, The dog, which police described as a "pit-bull terrier type dog" attacked Ellie Lawrenson and her 46-year-old grandmother in the early hours of the morning at a house in St Helens. The grandmother, named by police as Jackie Simpson, was seriously injured and is being treated in hospital, but the little girl was fatally wounded in the attack. Nothing much to be asked but just wanted to know whether you would leave a tiny baby alone in a room with a dog, or in your case a Labrador? Nothing personal, just want your reply.....

I would not leave my child with a dog or any pet whatsoever. I'm personally afraid of dog rabies. I've seen a kid die from it. And being in a 3rd world country where it's almost a luxury to get anti rabies for dogs, I prefer no dogs around me or my kids.

I think they should make a new law to keep dogs in there houses because there's been a lot of these cases lately and its making me sick. People should watch there dogs and make sure they don't hurt anyone.

I pity the little girl and the grandmother. But putting the girl in the same room with the dog is very silly. Its like playing with fire. I hope that everyone here dont take things for granted that their dogs are men best friend. Sometimes best friend can become your owrst enemy.

I guess that I would think twice before leaving a baby with any dog, even a trusted family pet. Even a family pet can get jealous of a new baby, and they also will not likely have any conception of how fragile a little baby is and may not treat the baby accordingly. No, I would not wish to leave a baby in the same room with a labrador, not unattended. That just seems to be playing with fate.

When good pets gone wild, hmmmm, it's so scary, i also have a baby and a dog, but i never leave my baby alone and i dont even get my dog go near to my baby, i think the owner still have a responsibiliies to that incident. just my opinion though.

I cannot for hte life of me understand why people insist on these breeds of dogs. We have a maltese poodle that is the most affectionate and loving dog. What is it with people that they must have such a vicious and dangerous breed of dog.

I think it is one of those things, such as drunk driving..People just don't believe that it can happen to them, and are of the same ilk, and not inclined to being responsible. I do not think that any breed specific legislation is the answer, but only making owners more accountable for this kind of neglect. The biggest problem that I see, is the lack of accountability for one dog attacking another owner's pet. There is no law concerning this, but only small claims court to resolve any such issues..Laws and fines would encourage owners to keep their dogs under control, no matter what the breed or size. If large fines were imposed for one dog attacking another, and jail time required for one's dog attacking a human, I think that perhaps hitting the irresponsible person where it counts most would curtail the problem to some extent.. Early education would help a lot! Teaching the very young about responsible pet ownership, as well as how to avoid dog attacks would go a long way toward creating more responsible adults, and safer children.

sad story :( In my opinion you can't blame the dog ! The dog owner is 100 % responsible if his dogs become crazy ! If dogs grow up with love then they won't hurt anyone ! If you constantly treat a dog badly he will surely flip out someday ! In this case i would punish the owner and not the dog !

I disagree; there are some breeds that just seem to be more prone to aggressive behavior, pit bulls being one of them. A dog is an animal and animals are ruled by instinct, not 'love'. That's like saying you can raise a baby bear cub with love and it won't hurt anyone.

There is so much controversy about the Pit Bulls. I personally believe that they will eventually be outlawed universally as pets. Many people have Pits that are great pets, I know, but the breed seems to be so unpredictable. Did this report say what, if anything, provoked the dog to attack? Sometimes a 5 year old can make a dog angry or frighten him, and by instinct he will attack. Even if you teach children to "be nice to the doggy" and not to try to take food or toys from the dog, they will still do it. I don't think that young children should be alone in a room with any dog for this reason, even a breed that is notably docile like a Lab. Any dog can attack if it feels threatened.

in my personal opinion, the really problem is the Owner , not the dog!!! becausealso a pitbull, if it would be educated by a tender owner,serious... which he give it a lot of love.....beh..... also the pitbull would be a joker dog..

I don't like so much dogs and if i have a baby and a dog maybe i will lock the dog in another room. I think it is not healther for the baby to have such pets in the room and how you sad it is very dangerous for the baby's life

I'm so sorry to hear this story! We have big dogs and we love them very much but I'm never going to let them near our babies. I think they do it because they're jealous of the new babies..

That happened to by brother, he was not killed, but my cousin's female mixed dog, who was about ten or something years of age, bit my brother in the face, at first we thought she just wanted to play and we thought that maybe she needed some attention, but it turned out to be worse than that. My cousin's went to walk the dog and the dog went and mauled a boy, the boy was not killed, but he had to have thirty-two stitches put into his face. My cousin felt so bad, he did but the dog down, and he paid for the boy's medical care. Sometimes with dogs, you never know. My cousin's dog was a yellow lab mix, so we never thought she would go bad, but sometimes they do.

This is ridculious to keep hearing that pitbull type dogs are the only one's who do this. Rottweilers and german sheppards are just as dangerous. Anyways it should be the fault of the grandmother for leaving the toddler alone with the dog.

I would never leave a young child unattended with any breed of dog including small/toys ones period. It is a recipe for disaster in my opinion no matter how well behaved a dog is. A young child unknowingly could poke it in the eye etc causing another wise good natured dog to snap in self defence. It would not be the child's or dog's fault, but the adult who is entrusted in both their care in my opinion.

This was a hideous accident. I remember it on the news. I really don't like dogs myself and once got attacked by one whilst on my paper round. I really was quite scared by that and have never really liked dogs since. This dog was a banned type but I have to say I would not be keen on leaving a baby in a room with a dog of any sort.
