I think my house was just hit by lightning

January 20, 2007 5:58pm CST
there was a massive flash instantly followed by a an unimaginable boom and the house shook. It was quite scary. Do you think it's safe to touch the walls? I guess it can't have done too much damage because the elctricity is still on. On a broader note what is going on with the weather. We've just had the biggest storm in 17 years, snow finally predicted on monday after the warmest winter on record, it never stops raining. While i've been reading about freezing weather in the U.S. and droughts in Australia. Is global warming really starting to kick in?

It might be, but I think it's just because it's an El Nino year... Like the one they had seven years back or so...

possibly but we aren't usually very affected by el nino in the UK. I think maybe its just weird weather.

OR maybe you're right and it is global warming lol! I'm not sure about the lightning, that's never happend to me... I'd think it would blow a hole through your roof or something though, because I've seen trees that got struck by lightning and there wasn't much left of them!

ur home might got struck by lightening but its not there anymore. its gone back to earth within a fraction of a second u can touch ur wall its safe now. however u better try to dischurge anything that can be charged. i recommend dont touch anything like TV or something like that (though there is zero possiblity the lightning is there) untill u check them up by a qualified person. any sort of batteries arent safe. and i dont think there has to be any holes through roof coz of lightining struk! it doesnt make any sense. by the way i think climet of beautiful planet is changing and its changing into a global greenhouse. the hole in ozonosphere still increasing its size and im skeptic enough whether anyone to take any action for that. nobody used to care about our nature instead everyone is thinking of themselvs. smokers wont quit smoking coz they cant live without smoking. u have to use CFC coz u need to freeze stuffs, u have to emmit carbon di oxide coz u have to drive ur car fast. people are nuts and dont even care about future!

Yeah, it is. Global warming has many influence in this world, especially weather. In many places such as in Philippine, Malaysia, and Indonesia, May natural disaster happened. I heard some news that within the last decade, the sea level has raised about almost 10 meters. If there is no prevention, there will be more disaster in the near future due to the global warming. U.S should follow the regulation of Kyoto act about reducing the emission of industry.

That would be very scary. I guess you're electronics are okay and didn't get fried, since you're obviously using the computer now. We just received our first snowstorm in over a year...finally got to try out our snowthrower!

so this happened why you were on the computer? If thats the case then no your house wasnt struck by lightening because it would have fried all your electrical things or at least some of them. If it did hit and nothing happened youre a one in a million case. If it wasnt safe to touch the walls it wouldnt be safe to touch anything that plugs into the wall. Unless in such a case that you have a laptop, then I guess its possible but not plausible if nothing caught on fire. I dont know exactly how your storms are over there, but I feel that it is very unlikey your house was hit. I think also that we are not really getting super close to global warming. Scientifically, we could still live another 500 billion years. Even if we progress at a more rapid rate then we are currently. Religiously though, everyone needs to be prepared. I dont really think global warming is what we need to be worried about. I think the fact that the sun is a medium sized star is what we need to worry about. For those who dont know it means that eventually ((even though its likely billions of years away)) the sun will explode and destroy our universe. I dont really know, this is all just my opinion. ((well most of it))

well actually i was on my laptop at the time which wasn't plugged into the mains, but my TV and other stuff was plugged in. It probably just hit very near my house, but it must have been ridiculously close because i've never heard a noise quite like it

Lighting hit next to our house a few years ago. Blew out the phones, t.v., and to my great sadness, my monitor, processor, and anything hooked to my computer. So much for surge protectors. I would think if it hit your house you would see some indication of that somewhere on the outside. You might want to get your electrical system checked anyhow just in case. On the subject of global warming, I'm sure it is something to watch and possibly worry about for future generations, but I also think if you look back in history, the weather has always been changing, even before pollution, cars, global warming, etc.

The lightening might have hit close to your house. We were driving through Missouri/Illinois over the summer during a storm and it was the first time I actually saw lightening hit close. It scared the crap out of me. We're on the interstate and all of a sudden there was a flash so bright you couldn't see (very scary when you are doing 75 miles an hour) and then the boom was so load it hurt my ears and the car shook. It happened twice on that trip. The weather has been goofy here. I live outside of Pittsburgh and up until last week it was in the 50s and raining. It felt like spring yet it was the middle of January. Last Monday I went to K-mart at 7pm and didn't have a jacket on because it was almost 60 degrees outside, lol. Then the next day it dropped to like 20 degrees and has been cold and snowing ever since but we still haven't had enough snow to actually need boots or anything. I think the most we got was 1/2 inch the other night. Crazy, I say!

I don't think your house was hit. Lightening hit across the road from our house ealier in the winter and it fried 1 of our tvs' the dvd player and the vhs machine and took out the power. If the walls are wood of your house and you were struck you can touch the walls another thing if you were hit by lightening don't think the internet would still be working.
22 Jan 07
the internet wasn't on at the time so it would be OK. The walls of my house are not made of wood, their made of brick, what does that mean for me?

If you are able to read what i wrote here, you are not stuck by lighting. It is just some bright light from a car or a truck... :) Dont worry about global warming. Dont stop doing anything. It will take another 5 or 6 generations to see any small impact of global warming. Concentrate on what you have in hand and do what you can if you want to be a good citizen of your country. Plant couple of tree's around your house or at a vacant land you find. That will be it what you can do for Global Warming. Rest of the stuff is for the country leaders to take care of the garbage they are filling up in the rivers and sea.

i'm pretty sure it was lightning, unless the car exploded afterwards and i just haven't noticed, and houses often get hit by lightning and it just get earthed through the bricks and into the ground

yes it is Im sorry to say. I live in the United States and never have experienced weather like this. It is winter time and up untill the past week its been much warmer then usuall. Just yesterday the tempt. dropped to the single digets here. and the wind was violent. So Im afraid global warming has started. We have been warned but unfortantly nobody really took the advice. I hope your house is okay. Like you say if the electric is still on I dont think its too bad. But still be careful when touching anything around your house.

Its difficult to say whether global warming is directly connected to all of these examples that you are mentioning. Global warming patterns might cause freakish weather for decades and even centuries to come. British climatologists predicted earlier this month that a combination of El Ñino patterns coupled with greenhouse gases building in the atmosphere could make 2007 a year of ecological disasters. Lets hope that its not so severe as what they are predicting!

yes the global warming has really started showing its result. u can just go through some of the events for past two years and u are sure to find all the catastrophes related to global warming.im from india and for that matter i have a track on all the events that shook us heavily. it was the deadly waves that hit the east coast due to tsunami. we r started to seeing dipping in mercury, unimaginable increase in temperatures during summers(compared to previous years) and out of 20+ states more than 10 to 12 states are under water during rainy seasons. all thanks to Global warming. this is what i saw in my country for last couple of years and so is with the rest of the world. nad no doubt we should be ready to face the more furious future...

yes its perfectly safe to touch the walls, the lightening strike is over and no there is no harm, but check your electrical settings once for there might be some damage due to the strike and yes the global warming is beginning to kick in.......

Depending on the size of the bolt when it sizzled it's way through your house it would have located the natural gas lines and your house probably would have exploded. More likely that it hit the ground nearby and the resultant thunder clap is what shook the house along with the impact of the near miss lightning bolt on the ground making the ground shake and the thunder then made the air and earth shake so it prolonged the shaking effect. That's what I think. I may be wrong.
22 Jan 07
i'm pretty sure houses don't explode but i have heard that it usually short circuits the entire house and wipes your computer. Which is what i was most worried about, i've got a lot of very important work on my computer

I would say it was very close but you would beable to see where a hit occurred I think climate change is normal but the addition of industrial chemicals changes it faster

You know, growing up in one of the states that has the most frequent lightening in the US...we kinda were taught not to have your computer or anything else plugged in when there is a lightening storm. That is a good way to fry your electronics. But hey, he you like an egg for a computer, more power to you. ha ha As for touching your walls...as long as the walls aren't metal, you'd be fine. But if you are living in a metal house, I would think that your butt would be fried like that egg computer. LOL Global warming his been kicking it....sadly. And guess what, I was one of those suckers that was caught in the ice storm. My state alone had over 100,000 people without power when the wind chill factor was in the negatives. But we got lucky! I am happy to say, that we did not loose power! :) So, on a typing I went on myLot. :)

That is freaky, smuggeridge! It does sound like your house was hit, or maybe the lightning hit so nearby that it just felt like it. I mean, it seems like if your house was truly hit that your electric would have been affected, so I don't know. But either way, I am glad to hear that you are okay! The weather really has been crazy this winter, I have to say. We were having a very warm winter here in Missouri as well until just recently. Now it's cold and we have more snow on the way, possibly.
21 Jan 07
i'm looking forward to the snow. We've had nothing but mild rain all winter, it horrible and depressing. However i do get the feeling that the weather is out to get me, i was almost blown away in 80mph winds on thursday and everytime i go outside i get soacked and now the lightnings after me! Whats next!

I think it's safe to say your house wasn't hit, but if the lightening and the thunder clap happened close together then it was close to you. We have horrendous thunder and lightening storms in Florida and I've had thunderclaps so loud they made me run back inside my house but anyone I know who has had their house hit by ligthening says that their electrical appliances pretty much get fried. Their TVs and computers won't work anymore. And you would definitely be safe to touch the walls as they are dry and therefore don't conduct electricity. If it's thundering and lightening though, you don't want to be doing dishes in the sink or taking a shower or talking on a land-line telephone. Those things can conduct electricity.
