If you get lost, would you stay put and wait for rescue? or go look for help?

If you end up in a desperate situation where you need to make the choice, what would you do? I hear most people say that one is more likely to survive if they stay put... Then I ask myself, what if no one knows where you are? I for one would not want to waste away waiting. But then again, what if someone comes for me, and I'm not there? Your thoughts?
