Your children's names

How did you decide what to name your child(ren)? Are they named after someone? You just heard a name you liked and went with it?
We wanted names that weren't already used by someone else in the family. With our first son, we each took the baby name book and made a list, seperately, of names that we liked. We combined the names on both lists to a new list and moved them around until we found a combination that we both liked.
Our second son was named after three people. We put them together the way they sounded best, to us.
If we do decide to have a third child, which we've been thinking about, we're in trouble if it's a boy! We're running out of ideas! lol

I must have read dozens of baby name books when I was pregnant, lol. With my first daughter, I really liked the name Brianne, but her father had a friend with a baby of that name. So I thought I was being rather clever and changed the e to an a. I really thought I had made up the name. The week she was born, there were 4 other Brianna's born that same week!! LOL. Oh well, I still love her name even if I didn't make it up myself.

For the first name of all our children was something my husband and I picked out together that we both liked and for the middle name we used for someone we were naming our child after . If I picked the name for our child to be named after then my husband got to pick the other name as they all have three names plus the last name to their name .

we chose Jonah Sailor because my grandfather was 'Joe' and my husband's grandfather was 'Johan'. Same letters, different name. Also, the meaning of the name was very important to both of us, and Jonah means 'peaceful'. The Sailor part came before we had any idea I was pregnant. I was reading a book wherein the character's dog was named Sailor and I looked at my husband and said, "Wouldn't Sailor be a cute name for a boy?" and he loved it! It's a bit different, but I figure in this day and age he won't be made fun of what with all the children named Lotus, Legend, Juniper, and Sage out there.

When I have a child if he is a boy I will name him Ethan Thomas Bergen.
I think the name really flows well and sounds neat, but the best part of the name will occur during my child's first year of life. A lot of people see new born babies and think they look really cute. I disagree with this. In my opinion very young babies kind of look like aliens and are sort of scary. Therefore with the name I picked I can just call my kid E.T. for the first year of his life. Its brilliant!!?!!?!
Unfortunately, Ethan is becoming a super popular name so I might have to find another E name. Any suggestions?

ROFL I had to laugh when I read this. You're nothing, if not honest. :) I guess it's a mom thing to think that newborns are cute, but I have to agree than one or two in my lifetime I had to bite my tongue a little bit when I said they were cute. :) Most are, in their own way.
Sorry, I'm no help with the "E" thing. I didn't really find any E names that I liked when we were looking. Ethan is a nice name, but like you said, it has gotten popular, which was one thing we were trying to avoid. It seems that when we picked names, however, others picked the same ones. Same thing happens when we buy a new car. Never see one like ours until we buy it. Then it seems like so does everyone else! :)

My oldest is named after his grandfather and his best friend at the time (both with the same name) with his father's name for his middle name. I chose my daughter's name just because I liked it. My third child was difficult to name because his father and I could not agree on a name throughout my entire pregnancy. He finally ended up with 2 middle names instead of one. I let his father decide the names for the other boys (with my approval of course) and I decided my youngest daughter's name (with his approval).

I forgot to mention that one of the boys happened to end up with my brothers middle name for his first name though his dad didn't know when he picked it.

I have a girl and i named her Kierrah. i love names that begin with the letter K so that's why i picked that name. her middle name is laura. i picked that because it's my grandmother's name and she is the only person in my family that i am close to and i wanted to honor her.

hi there..
well we have a boy, he has 2 names, his second name was WALSHEN, a combination of me and my hubby's names.. And all of my friend's and relatives liked it too.
i guess giving names to your children is quite a tough tought at the same time, because you may want to give them names that they will also like, or else they would have to ask you why you gave such names to them, and wished it was different. LOL^_^
Thanks a bunch..

We wanted to name our first son after me (I guess a lot of people do that). After this, we decided that family names would be nice for other children. It is really so hard to decide on a name. We also looked at the name books. What allways bothered me was when you would see someone name their child some stupid or silly name that the child would have to live with all of their life.

The ones I picked were all strong English names; sure they hated them when they were younger but now that they are a little older they realize that their names aren't all that common. I'm glad that I didn't go off the deep end with the names ... I still can't beleive that I wanted to name one of them Alistair.

We wanted names that were overly popular and trendy without getting weird. My daughter's middle name is slightly more popular these days, but I've only seen one or two people with her first name. I rejected a lot of names because I had a bad association with the name, but the one that we finally chose I knew one person with that name long ago and I had a lot of respect for her. We didn't name her after that person, but if it wasn't for her I probably never would have thought of it.

For my daughter her first name was a name I heard years ago when it wasn't very popular I might add and went with that. My problem I had was a middle name and my husband's mother helped us with that. As for my son, my hubby had a name in his head and I liked it as well so I decided to go with that and his mom helped with the middle name and his middle name is my husband's first name:o) We actually had both names when my daughter was born so when we had our son I already had the name LOL! I would have been in trouble had it been another girl though LOL!

my daughter's name is kierrah, pronounced key air ah. years ago when i first saw lion king 2. simba's daughter was called kiara. well i really liked that name but about 8 years after i saw that was when i had my daughter. i kind of remembered that i liked that name but thought it was kierrah and not kiarah. i couldn't remember it exactly. anyway so i kind of named her after that but after i fugured out the lion king way i realised i was pleased with my mistake cause i prefer her name then the lions name.

My oldest is named after his father which is named after his father so he is the third. My daughter is named after my grandfather and my youngest son's middle name is my mothers family name. So in a sense they are all named after a grandparent.

We basically picked names that both my husband and I liked. We agreed on most names for girls but always had trouble with names for boys. I guess in that way it was a good thing that we have three girls :)

I looked through some baby name books to pick a name for my daughter. I chose a name I liked and also liked the origin and meaning of the name.

My girlfriend kept throwing names at me and I rejected them one by one. But eventually she hit a couple that I just couldn't argue with. A lot of the names I had a bad association with, but the name we ended up choosing I had only ever seen once and I had a lot of respect for the person.

We picked the first child's name out of a book (I knew I wanted a "C" name). We actually saw a book my Dad had and the author had this first name and we really liked it.
The second child I dreamed her name :)
And the third we still haven't named :)
