I seem to be suffering yet another bout of insomnia, but trying to figure out the cause is probably making the problem worse. I have spent most of last night staring at the ceiling, listening to the tick of the clock, and desperately trying to sleep. So I'm asking, anyone, what causes insomnia?

Hi recycledgoth, I suffer from bouts of this aswell and I can't really link what affects it. I usually get it once every couple of months and it can last for a few days right up to a few weeks. It doesn't matter whether I'm stressed or not, although I do think it is all to do with your brain. I've recently put up a discussion to see if anyone has any tips on helping you sleep - if you have any let me know!

Usually stress and anxiety causes it. But, if it is long going, it could be a physical problem to check out.
Meanwhile, the more you try to sleep, the harder it is.
So, try not to exercise or discuss anything unpleasant before bed. Take a warm cup of milk and go to bed. I hope this will help.

Thanks for that hun, I'll give it a try.
Still not getting a full night's sleep, and my lovely partner is beginning to worry about me now. I'll keep trying out any remedies I can.

There are a variety of different things that may cause insomnia.. Some of those things would have to be things such as.. Stress, work, depression, to much caffeine, to hot in a room, to cold in a room.. As well as.. Sometimes the room not being dark enough can keep one up.. Or sometimes if a partner snores, or if a person takes medication.. There are various reasons that this happens..
Sometimes you need to ask yourself questions such as.. Are you thinking to much about things before you go to bed?! Is something bothering you or are you stressed out about something specifically?! As well.. Do you drink to much caffeine during the day?! Or is there something that is helping to depress you?! Sometime's one has to ask themselves these questions to get answers.. Or at least to come up with a solution as to why they may not be sleeping at night..
I know that I have a difficult time sleeping at night as well.. I've asked myself those questions above & have found out eventually what was bothering me so much.. And I tried to change what I was eating & my routine & found that sometimes by doing this it had helped me to sleep a little better at night.. But I know what it is like to have insomnia.. It makes a person begin to feel exhausted & weak after a short while..
The only thing I can tell you to do is find a way to relax.. I know that some people will coming up with a few cures so they can sleep better at night.. Some people will try drinking warm milk, or taking a nice hot bubble bath.. And just relaxing for a little back, unwinding before they go to bed.. Sometimes it's best to take a hot bath before going to bed.. It helps to make your muscles less tense & helps one to unwind & feel better in general..
Sometimes if a person can't really sleep it's best to get out of bed & try to.. Read a book or watch television for a bit.. Something that is boring & will put you to sleep while watching it. It's best not to just lay there waiting to go to bed.. It just doesn't work, as I am sure you already know..
I think by making small lifestyle changes.. Such as having a fixed routine, or by relaxing & eating properly, that insomnia can eventually be cured.. Sometimes even by visiting a doctor it can help because they can help you come up with solutions..
I hope you eventually begin to sleep better.. I wish you all the best! . . xx

I have tried most remedies in the past, some work better than others. A warm bath sometimes works, but I find myself waking in the night and unable to get back to sleep. I tried going for a brisk walk an hour or so before going to bed, but again I woke in the night. I try to keep as fit and healthy as I can, but still I find this to be an on-going problem.
It seems that the longer I suffer insomnia, the more stressed I get, which leads to insomnia, which in turn etc etc., it's like being a hamster in a wheel. I suspect I will need to see a doctor before much longer, but your suggestions have helped a lot, thanks

My main cause of stress at the moment is my lack of sleep unfortunately. Maybe a warm bath and hot milk this time

I have suffered from insomnia most of my life and it is something that I have learned to deal with. I have found that the best way to controll how often I battle with sleep is to get exercise. Go for a Run! Running not only helps you to sleep from burnt energy but also releaves you of your stress.

I've tried a brisk walk before bedtime, I found myself still waking in the night unable to get back to sleep though. Perhaps I'll give this idea another go, thanks

Do you always have something that you have been thinking about? It might be the cause of insomnia, something that you cannot get out of my mind. Do you feel deprresed because of something. I suggest you to go to doctor and ask bout this. Because it is a serious problems with your health

I've seen my doctor about this problem before, and she takes the view that insomnia is self-induced but cannot offer any help to combat the sleepless nights.
