Every day we hear about people being lost in the wilderness. Some are lucky enough or have enough skills to survive until found, or find their way out. I watch and read alot about survival but I'm not sure I have enough skills to make it. Do you keep emergency supplies in your car? Are you trained in survival? Any survival stories.
I always trie to remember the following.
Survival is a state of mind. Control your fears and avoid panic. Decide to live. Analyze your situation and plan a course of action only after considering all of the aspects of your predicament and keeping in mind your safety at all times. Don't make any quick judgments. It's usually poor judgement that leads to your demise.

I think I could. I have a pocket multitool on my keychain all the time and I've seen lots of shows and documentaries on survival. In any scenario I would likely get myself into, I would probably be able to get out of it. I think its important to know basic survival skills so they can survive if not just for a little bit. We see a lot of news stories of people getting lost and not know what to do.
I like a few survival shows;
Survivor Man
Man vs. Wild
I Shouldn't Be Alive

We watch all those how to survive shows on the Discovery Channel and oddly enough I have used several things from them. Like on one show they did how to treat your dog if he gets injured on the trail it wasn't but three days later that my dog injured his paw terribly I was able to remember what the expert said and get his foot fixed up so we could get the vet the next day.
Because we live in a rural area and have to travel a long distance even to the store I always carry emergency supplies in my car and we have a house kit as well.
My tip would be this if you have prescription medications that are required for your survial you should always have at least a three day supply in storage along with a detailed list of what you take and how much in your car in case you are in an accident, even simple pain medications and anthestia can have terrible reactions with prescriptions. The paramedics and police will look for this information.

I'm fairly resouceful and keep emergency supplies in my car. I used to have a survival guide but it got ruined in the trunk when washer fluid leaked out of the bottle onto it. I think I would be okay for a while as long as I wasn't hurt.

MY VIEW FOR SKILLS TO SURVIVE
As our society becomes more and more technological, cold and urban, ever more people are starting to feel the urge to get away from it all, take a break from modern life and go back to the way things were for our ancestors. Perhaps this explains the rising popularity of camping holidays, the ultimate experience of going back to nature and living in the wild, with only a basic structure for shelter and a fire for cooking.
Of course, lots of people don’t exactly do it that way. Camper vans are popular, as is ‘car camping’, and all sorts of electrical appliances have been adapted for camping – there are even camp microwaves. Most people consider at least modern toilets and showers to be a campsite necessity, regardless of whether it’s really true to the spirit of the activity. Camping doesn’t really have to be an outdoors thing if you don’t want it to be, as many camper vans aren’t that much different to houses on wheels, and many families stay in them for a large part of their holiday. It’s all about doing what you feel comfortable with.
For hardcore campers, though, the truest form of camping is camping which teaches survival skills, such as eating-wild caught food, finding your way around by the position of the sun and making fire. You would have to be very hungry to eat the animals that can be found in the woods of most countries, however, and for this reason camping with facilities and packed food is far more popular.
Most campsites are in woods or open fields, and are often publically-owned – if you want to find one, they should be clearly marked on maps for walkers and on road signs for cars. It’s up to you what you take with you, but most people will prefer to have at least a tent, sleeping bags, torches, and either a tool for making firewood or portable oven where campfires aren’t allowed.

This was obviously copied and pasted. I have reported it to mylot as your rating is less than 500 and you are not supposed to be able to copy and paste. If you have found a loop hole it is still a violation.

Come to think of it i've never taken any training in survival techniques nor do i have any inherent survival skills :( the best thing is i've never come across any situation uptill now that would threaten my survival!
i really appreciate the guidelines you have provided they can really come in handy when one is faced with such a situation!

You are absolutely right about that mari61960. But one thing i do think its important is making people know and be prepared to use survival skills, i am apologist of the following:
-Survival skills should be tought;
-Survival skills should be trained;
-Survival skills should be used in a controlled environment;
All this for the people that usualy goes out camping in the willderness, they all should have at leats survival basic training, thtas the main reason they get lost or even die at the wildrness.

I told my husband that when we take long trips we should have a few necessities in the car just in case. But, we do not have them. I want to leave a blanket in the back seat. He thinks it is clutter. I want to keep a jug of water in the back. He thinks it is stupid. You get the what I am saying.
If I were out in the wilderness I would have a problem. I have read many books that describe how to live off the land. Maybe what I read would kick in and I would be okay. Ever read Jean M Auel books? She is awesome.

I know what you mean "the invincable man"..lol Yes, I have only read The Clan of the Cave Bear. I am going to read The Shelters of Stone when my moms friend returns it. She really is great. I also like all the books of "The First North Americans" series by Kathleen O'Neal Gear, W. Michael Gear. They really are my favorite type of book to read. I am waiting to start the most recent, People of the Raven. I let my mom read it first, she reads more often than I do.
Heres a link to a list of the series:

i dont think i'd be able to survive. i hate bugs, i hate animals. i cant tell the difference between poisonous and non-poisonous plants and berries and whatever. i wouldnt be able to just kill an animal and cook it. i dont think i could even make a fire by rubbing two sticks together. i think i'd probably just sit somewhere (clean) in the forest and cry. its not that im super high-maintenance, but there are things that ive gotten used to in life. i have stayed a bit of time in afghanistan where there was no water, no electricity, it was dirty, it was hot...but i just couldnt do that for a long period of time, and i definitely couldnt do it alone.

My aunt worried and worried about being on the road alone in the winter, yet she laughed at me because I would prepare a winter emergency kit for the car. We always have extra blankets. Carry a metal coffee can and a candle, it will warm the whole car. Carry bottles of water and high energy foods. Really practical things. I also try to carry old rugs to put under the tires for traction if I am stuck. I had one car that would often high center, so I learned to carry a shovel or hoe to clear the snow out of the undercarriage.

Yes, I know I could. It would be difficult to have to look for every bite of food and drink of water, to provide a warm, safe shelter and to make clothes out of furs and hides. I am accustomed to flipping a light switch, turning a faucet, going to the store and traveling in a vehicle. But, I could do it if I had to.

yes, many people cannot survive at the wildrness because they didnot have skill survival.
I think the extracurriculer that teach student survival is very important.
May be in the US, the summer camp it was very good program. I think every student must follow the program.
I had the scout lesson at the first graduate school, It's helpfull for student to learn the survival.
But it's a pitty, that now the extracurriculler is not exist anymore...

I don't think I would be able to survive . I panic way to easy in bad situations and would not know the first thing to do . I watch the show survivor and my husband would love to go on and try it out , I wouldn't for sure because I know I could never do it . I can't even swim if I had to and the thought of eating other the food from the store , well I guess I would starve . I wouldn't be able to build a fire unless I had someone with me because I would be so nervous I would probably lose the lighter I carry with me lol.

Well in my opinion, the best thing you can do is start learning not to panic. Panic is the downfall of most situations. You simply can't think clearly while pannicking..lol I'm sure you are already aware of this.

this is a really good topic to discuss about.what will you do when you are lost in a wilderness or in some kind of trouble?what will your reactions be?the first thing to do is not to panic.there was one time when i was carried away by a few persons in their car.i was terrified in the beginning.but later i composed myself and saw to that i somehow escaped.i thought that would be the last day i would survive.that was a horrifying and a experince that i learned from.

Survival skills are skills that may help one to survive dangerous situations (such as storms or earthquakes), or in dangerous places. Useful skills include lighting a fire, finding shelter,finding and identifying food, treating injuries, and climbing, swimming, and using specific or makeshift tools.so it is useful only in dangerous situations

Yes it is important to fight it out and survive till the very end. For that, we need to make sure that we learn continously and excel in a field that we chose.
Another important thing to note is that we need to learn which may not seem to be so important at the sight..
You never know which skill can help you when and how...

Well though I don't keep supplies in my car if I'm just driving around the city but I do consider it once I have to go to other places by road. As for my survival skills I believe that if thrown in the middle of wilderness I may survive for a couple of weeks but I can't guarantee more than that and it really depends on where you are, for instance if you are trapped inside a cave then you have little chance to survive but if you are some where in a jungle or something you might find some fuits or some other edibles to keep you going but then again unless you don't have survival skills you may be able to last only for a few days.

I think i can. It will base on your instincts and your will to fight/live. If you really want to survive then something will always come up to your mind. Just control your fear and think of everthing that you are going to do. And most of all as others said, dont panic!
