Have you ever experienced an earthquake?

It's not too often we get earthquakes here in the UK, but no and then we do, thankfully only small intensity ones and there is rarely any serious damage. But with so many of the MyLot members living in earthquake zones in made me wonder if you have to make preparations for earthquakes, do you keep an emergency pack in the cupboard with torches, water and tinned foods .. or do you just hope you never get a big enough 'quake to need that kind of provision.
Sorry to ask such a potentially serious question, but the worlds weather is changing so alarmingly, and justrecently the UK has had tornados and hurricane strength winds so you never know what to expect next !

That is scary! I have been in one yet and don't want to be. It just doesn't seem like a thing I could handle.

That is definitely one thing we have to be thankful for, for living in the UK, we get the grotty weather sure but we don't have the earthquakes well only minor tremors but certainly not like the ones in Japan, China and LA and some parts of America. I know the film Earthquake used to put the frighteners on me as a child and I always remember saying to my dad, it won't happen here will it daddy, it won't happen will it? I was only a kid and I was so frightened! I guess countries that get regular earthquakes are used to it and obviously the infrastructure of the buildings reflect this, but it still makes it no less scarier to be in one I imagine.

Personally I think it's just the helplessness you have with earthquakes that's so frightening .. with high winds you can find a strongly built place to shelter in .. floods and we can hopefully get to higher ground .. freezing cold weather use more heat until it passes .. blistering hot days we can seek shade or use a fan .. but earthquakes we simply have no control over and can do nothing to prevent it or stop it happening .. and that's scary!

Well i have experienced earthquake(major) once, first, when i was a very small kid(at Andaman and nicobar islands), only thing i remember was that, all the things were falling down and my father just took me out of the building ,it was raining heavily outside ,n i was wondering why are we standing in the rain and staring at out building .But no seroius damage happened to our house coz, it was built of wood.now a days ppl. maker thier houses from concrete without thinking what kind of area thry are living, ok lot of new designs have come up, but for small places wooden stuctures are better for earthquakes, also wooden houses are beautiful.
The sad thing is that although there are many places in inida which are very sensitive from this point of view, not every one is prepared for it. Only when a major disater strikes ppl. takes some action, drills are aranged in schools n offices, n things fade away as time passes. Many of my friends lost thier homes (in Andaman n nicobar islands)in the recent earthquake which created the sunami.I am not living there anymore ,but i feel that something shud be done to make ppl. aware, even before sunami, earthquakes were not new, but now after sunami ppl. are geting some awareness, which is good.
So, we all shud check out and know what kind of georaphy we live ,and take measures to tackle adversities whrn they strike.

When I was younger I lived in California. I believe it was an 8.0 that hit on Thanksgiving. It scared the living daylights out of me cause it felt like no other earthquake I had ever been through, it was like the floor of my house was being turned into waves on an ocean. Though the worst ones that I can remember is the ones that would hit at night. I have been through some bad ones I can't remember exactly how many I have been through, but it is certainly plenty for this lifetime..lol.
We always kept emergency supplies around, for just in case and it's something that I still practice now that I am out on my own. Not that I am paranoid, but you just never know when any emergency will arise.

Being a native of California, I have been in quite a few earthquakes. They ave never been anything seriuos, well, the Loma Prieta in 89 was pretty seriuos. It knocked down our main thoroughfares, most significantly , the Bay Bridge. Fortunately, I didn't feel that one.
To answer your question, I know many people (everyone I know) who have talked about putting togehter an emergency kit. I only know a few who actually did. I actually came across a kit, or a sample item for the store, and now I have one. If you are looking to make one, chek out the website www.72hours.org , if it doesn't work, lose the "s" in the url.

Yes I have experienced a really strong quake but it was many years ago, about 20+ years ago. I was in the second floor of the office and the building was really swaying back and forth, the wooden panels squeaking, etc., and it lasted about 5 minutes or so. Our boss was telling everyone to hide under our desks and we were all very quiet and nervous. I remember I was fervently praying my family at home are safe.
In my country those who can afford always have enough candles, flash lights, canned food and rice stored in the house for emergency purposes especially during the rainy season because we always get hit by typhoons. Yes nowadays everybody, no matter where you are, have to be ready with necessities you deem crucial to your household. May God spare us from devastating calamities.

I have been through many many earthquakes. My apartment is on a major fault line so I feel even the small ones. Sometimes I feel feel tremors everyday for a while. I hardly notice those. The small to medium ones I notice but go on doing what I was doing. They don't really scare me. Sometimes with larger quakes things will fall off of shelves or the walls. I remember when I was really little we had one that was over 8 points and I saw the ground ripple like jello.

Yes most of the time I experienced the earth quake when I was in Japan. Some I experienced in Indonesia, but not as bad as in Japan.
There in Japan, because it happens quite frequently; we all were well prepared. We were being trained of what to do and how to expect the earth quake. It became one of the school program, when I was there. If you happen to feel the ground moving a bit, don't stay in the house, patootie. Maybe the earthquake invades the UK.

i experienced a very major earth quake last year on 8th oct 2005 in pakistan its magnitude was 7.6 on the rictor scale it completely destroyed the northern part of pakistan but my area was not much damaged because of been at distance from epicenter. The earth quake was so strong that its tremors were even felt in the neighbouring countries of india and afghanistan. Whole cities and villages were completely viped of from the face of earth and the after shocks kept on coming even after 3 months.

I have this one experience when i worked overtime and I was on the 11th floor of the building. An earthquake happened and i felt the building bumping itself on the building beside it. Dirts from the ceiling started dripping and I thought the building will collapse! I was so scared that my face run out of blood! Good thing the building withstood the quake and we still live to tell the tale. I hope I will not experience the same thing again.
Maybe we'll just keep on being ready for every calamity or emergency that will come our way. One important thing for this type of circumstances - Relax! Don't Panic!

I think if we got an Earthquake in the UK this would be my Cue to leave!!
But you have brought up a very good point, because we have to take out Earthquake Insurance on our holiday home in Turkey!
I just hope and pray we dont need it!

Yeah, I am originally from California and for anyone who knows anything about the state, it has a number of fault lines that run through it. We get hit by earthquakes quite a lot, some rather large too.

I used to live in Sunny Southern California where earthquakes happen all the time and experienced many an earthquare ... their philosphy there is about the time you say "we are having an earthquake" it is over, which is about true. It is a very scary situation when one happens, the earth is shaking and you are totally out of control of it happening about the the time you freak out, it is over and you can start picking up the pieces that have fallen to the ground.
