We have a birthday here in our house today. I thought homemade birthday cake would be best but everyone here wanted one from the store. What do you guys like?

I think home-made birthday cakes are better.. But I truly do like the way they decorate the cakes at the store.. My other half & me have been buying cakes from the stores over the last few years.. I know it makes it easier because all you have to do is just pick it up. Also with some of my experiences of making them on my own.. I've had times where I was screaming at myself when making one.. Sometimes I find it's best to just go out & purchase one from the store so that it helps to.. Save myself, but also everyone around the house having to witness me throwing a screaming fit if it doesn't/didn't turn out. haha. But I kind of miss making my own Birthday cakes for people.. I know that I personally love cooking/baking.. And by one doing it themselves it sometimes gives more of a personal touch when you do it on your own. I know that when I used to make my own birthday cakes from scratch that a lot of people we're so thrilled that I was willing to do that.. I think it makes that person feel special because the person who had made it.. Was willing to spend the time, but also the effort to make them there own cake for there special day. I remember when I was a kid.. How a relative used to make a Birthday cake from scratch for me.. And I know how excited & happy it used to make me knowing that they we're willing to do that.. I kind of miss that in a way.. I remember how I had felt when I used to receive a home made Birthday cake.. And it's making me want to start doing that all over again. Thank you for posting this topic.. It has made me truly think, as well as compare what birthday cakes are much more meaningful in the end.. But also better as well for the person you may be making it for.. I know that it helped to remind me of how special I had felt when someone had done something like that for me.. I truly do miss that now! Thanks for allowing me to share. xx

made from scratch is the best if you have a good recipe and follow it well I first learned to bake and cook following recipes provided to me by family and I love that care and love that comes with them

I like the taste of the store bought cakes. Homemade don't seem to taste quite as good. I usually make a homemade cake tho. With my family, it is too expensive to buy cakes all the time and home made is cheaper. Buying an already made one is easier too.

my brother bakes cakes and he does it well. so, i love him baking cakes for us. but sometimes, he's lazy so there are times when i go to cake shops just to have a cake for that day for my craving. well, i think if you can bake a cake, it's better that way. but if people around you won't appreciate it, then, go and buy one. i always believe that cakes baked at home are better than those in stores.

Depends on the talent of the baker in question. Some people should stick with store bought, but some of the most delicious cakes I have ever tasted have been homemade.

That would totally depend on if the person knows how to decorate a cake. My family, not me indluded, knows how to decorate cakes. It seems that they all took a class of some sort that I never wanted to take. And because of this, I normally buy my cakes from a store. However, they go all out and make these special cakes. My sister even made my beautiful wedding cake! I may have a lot of patience...but I do not have enough patience to sit there and do all those decorations. I can't imagine how their hands must cramp up! But...I also like the homemade cakes better. I do not usually like the frosting they make at the store. But since I am no longer allowed to have it, I am not going to sweat the small stuff and just buy the cake from the store to save me time and grief.

Yes i am not talented when it comes to decorating cakes. My cakes always taste good, but they dont always look the way i intend them to look.

My kids are TRUE "Mama's Boy's". They much prefer anything that I cook or bake to food purchased from the store. I have to agree with them...homemade food always tastes so much better, especially since it's made with love. :) P.S....It's also A LOT cheaper to bake a cake yourself.

Another thing is that you know exactly what is going into the cake and can limit certain amounts of things and adapt recipes to suit you and your family, this is particular good if anybody has any allergies to any ingreidiants that could be used in some cakes.

First of all, happy birthday to whichever person in your family is having a birthday of his/her own. To the point anyway, I always trust store bought cakes in this situation, simply because they're fairly professional and never fail on these occasions. I know how to cook some cakes myself, but am no expert when it comes to this, so I guess my choice is just natural.

I just want to say well done to you for thinking to say happy birthday. I cant believe i totally overlooked that fact that it is somebodys birthday and was just thinking about cakes.

Hi devideddi, first i like to wish happy birthday to person in your house whose borthday it is. I get my birthday cake every year from a store that i trust will deliver a professional made cake that everyone can enjoy. I hardly know cooking so for me to bake a cake is not easy. Though it would be nice to bake homemade cake for fun as you can try different raw matrials in it. As i only have chocolate cake or creamy flavoured cake which has egg, chocolate, cream. And my mom doesn't eat it as she doesn't eat eggs so something without eggs would be nice. Hopefully someday i will bake one at a home. nice idea though. thanks.

I always make a homemade cake for the birthdays in my house, just seems like something that is from the heart instead of going to the store to buy one, just my opinion

I personally think homemade is much better than store bought. At least you know what's going into it and that all the ingredients are fresh. I especially love a home made Black Forest Gateaux. Yummm......

i like to have a home-made cake. it just has personal touch that's what's making the home made cake special. well, of course the store cake will always be the conventional, but if i was to choose, i'd go for the home made. if you have much time for preparations, go for the home made. it's not everyday that a birthday can come, so why not put a personal touch? :)

For my friends 21st birthday her parents gave her a cake with her photograph on it from when she was a baby that was bought from a store, her mother just handed in the photo and they made it in store and he went back to collect it.

There are only a few places I would buy a cake from. There's are two vegan organic bakeries nearby, one called Benevolence and the other Pattycake. They use all natural ingredients and their products are so yummy. One other bakery is Asian and they sell a light cake that's dairy-free and cholesterol-free with a whipped frosting and fresh strawberries...delicious. Otherwise, I prefer homemade. You know what's in it and you can make it look however you want to fit into a party theme.

It used to be that homemade cakes and cookies were so much better than store bought, but I think that today you can't beat cakes baked in some of the larger grocery chains. We have TOPS markets and Wegmans here, and both have awesome baked goods. This is good for someone like myself, who doesn't really enjoy the fuss and bother of baking. If your family wants a store bought cake, then go for it! It frees you up to do something else.

i always enjoyed baking cookies, i always thought that nothing comapres to homemade cakes, but lately i started to think that it's too much waste of time (and money sometimes) when u can have very good cakes already made. if u know any good cake confectioner sometimes u might even make a money saving by buying something already made. and like i said if the brand is a good one it might even taste better. and u also loose the stress of thinking if u are over baking it or if the recipe fails

They are both good but I think that store bought cake is better than homemade. Store bought cakes are baked by proffesionals. They know exactly what they are doing.
