What do you do while you drive?

A recent study has shown that 81% of Americans do more than just drive when they're behind the wheel.
Here are just some of the statistics:
More than eight out of 10 adjust the radio or music while they drive
73 percent talk on the phone
68 percent eat
19 percent send text messages
5 percent check their e-mail.
Personal hygiene is also a distraction:
19 percent fix their hair while driving
12 percent put on makeup,
and 2 percent even actually shave whilst driving.
Don't you think that it's time that we just take a step back and start paying attention while we drive? A lot of accidents could be avoided if more people would pay attention behind the wheel! ^_^

I have to admit that I have talked on the phone, sent and received text messages, gotten my kids a snack, reached for a rolling sippy cup, tossed a book from my seat to the back of the van to my child sitting back there, opened and read mail (the snail mail kind), and probably so much more!

I've had a few accidents in my day, not from doing something else while driving but just from not being aware of what was going on around me. Because of this, I am very careful when I drive. I cannot afford to have another accident and I sure don't want to risk anyone's life. I listen to music on the radio but never change the station or look around for CD's to put in. Just the radio, same station all the time. I might pull a candy out of my pocket and pop it into my mouth but that usually happens at a stop light.

Hmmm...I can't figure out where I am in that percentage.
I do listen to music but I don't fiddle with the channels or CDs. Quite often, I don't listen to music at all because I am normally thinking about something....and I don't get much quiet time, so I like to enjoy it while I have it.
I don't like to talk on the phone when I drive. My partner even knows I hate it and will pull over if he will not let me off the phone. So, if he calls me while I am driving, he will make it quick. So I don't think I can be put into this percentage either.
I can not eat when I drive. The last time I tried that, I got out of the car looking that I needed to wear a bib. It got very bad! Will not do it again. LOL
I do not have text messages available for my phone. My partner does not have that package and thinks it is pointless. So I do not get to participate in the mass population craze over texting.
Along with no texting, I do not have internet access to my phone. So that percentage it out too.
Personal hygiene? Sorry...I do NOT put my makeup on while I am driving. Forget it, you are not getting me out of this house until I have made sure that I have applied that I wanted to first. LOL And of course, my hair goes along with that. Why would I leave the house not being ready for where I am going? And I don't shave my face...shaving takes place in the shower. LOL
So, I don't know where I fit in that percentage.
I guess I just drive. LOL But I do talk to the passenger, if I have one....sometimes. ha ha But I don't drive a lot. So, I guess if I drove more, maybe I would fit in there somewhere, huh?
Hmmm....no. Sorry. :D LOL

I am guilty of some of these I must admit. I do eat while driving, I do adjust the radio since no one else is in the car, and I have talked on a cell phone before. I no longer talk on a cell phone, it is too distracting. I try not to eat while driving, but I will always adjust the radio.

When driving I don't eat, sometimes I listen to radio. Usually I just think about new ideas for next project, and I just enjoy driving.

Listen to my cd while I am driving and sing along with the song. It sooths me and make me more comfortable in the car. I never pick up my mobile phone when I am driving because apparently when it comes to driving I know myself, I can not do lots of things in one time.

I must admit, I do talk on the cell phone and fiddle with the radio, but if you look at the over all time frame where I do this, I will bet it is less then 1/10th of a percent of the time.
I used to eat and drive while on the road, but have realized that 15 minutes out of the car is time well spent.
I do drink, I think it helps in the alertness factor.

Personaly, i do nothing. I am the person racing 90 on a 55 flying right by you. Now you may think this is dangerous, but us racers are very aware of all traffic and how you are reacting to traffic, we look a mile ahead of us knowing what people are doing, we are constantly aware of where everyone is. Expecially the cops! So next time you see a racer flying by, know that he is the safest on the road because he knows how to drive better than everyone esle and he has 100 percent concentration on the road. Thus if an accident will happen, it is not because of him. If you look at accident reports, very few are from racers because we know what we are doing, as other drivers do not.
