Did you know the orange carrot we know today used to actually be purple?
Up until the 17th century, the carrot was purple. However, because the Dutch flag was orange, the Dutch wanted to show their patriotism by changing the carrot to orange. And this is what we see our carrots as today.

Would you eat a purple carrot? Or do you favor the orange carrot?
According to the article, the "Purple Haze" carrot is still orange on the inside.
I am a little disappointed by this fact. If the carrot looks purple, I would want the whole carrot to be purple. But, of course, that comes from a woman with purple streaked hair! LOL

Just like making a breed of dogs smaller by selectively breeding.
Foods can be altered with time by selectively growing carrots.

I had heard something about this previously in the news a while back but did not remember where or when it was supposed to happen. I am used to eating the orange carrot but if the purple carrot provides the same nutrition as the orange one does then I would have no problems eating it. As long as it is healthy I will eat it no matter what color. I wonder what other things are going to go back to their original colors if they have not already.

No offense, but I don't think I would have believed it if I hadn't read it myself. That was very interesting. Thank you for sharing it. I think I would still eat them and the concept of making them different colors may be appealing to kids. My boyfriend wouldn't eat them no matter what color they were.

See, I'm with you! I read today a little blurb that carrots were originally purple and then that is all it said! So I had to research it to see if it were true. And there is information all over the place about carrots being originally purple...and I never knew! ha ha This is the useless information that I love!!! LOL
So, I thought I would share! :)

I'm totally up for an orange carrot! But that's my favorite color. I think it's very interesting to know though that by all means it should be purple. You don't see too many things actually purple in nature. Even flowers that are purple they usually call blue.

Yes, purple is my favorite color. ha ha
As for different ketchup, I guess you didn't see my posting on what we call pink ketchup in our house. :)
But I guess changing ketchup to pink is not as much as a shocker of completely changing a color.

Gurl your discussions are odd yet intresting. I love reading your discussions.
I have never known that about carrots and for me as long as they taste the same the color dosnt matter to me one bit. I mean that is like taking food coloring amd coloring milk green and then drinking it. The taste is the same no matter what you do.
I am tinking of putting a blue streak in my hair, since my fav color is blue. But not untill my hair is its natural color. I have it black right now.

Okay this is the first time I have heard of a carrot being purple. But really I don't care what color it is as long as it taste the same and gives the same benifts as the orange carrot does. But like you...since I am such a huge purple fan, it would be kind of nice to have it be purple. lol

I do not know where you and they got that information but it is wrong. The carrot is naturally orange and sometimes white. It originated in Afghanistan or there abouts. The dutch adopted it because it was the color of their flag.

Wow, I hadn't run across this bit of news! I think that the purple carrots look a bit disgusting, myself *laugh* But then, I'm a bit biased, because orange is my favorite color. Therefore, one of my favorite things about carrots is the fact that they are such a vibrant orange! *laugh* So no, I don't think that I will be testing out these purple carrots anytime soon. I just find it really strange that carrots were originally purple! That blows my mind a little bit. *laugh*

I think I like the carrot as an orange color, I do not think that purple is a good color for it.

i agree completely. if it's purple on the outside, it should be purple on the inside. however, i know you can buy potatoes that look regular on the outside..but are purple on the inside. i saw a documentary on it on the discovery channel. and okay, as amazing as that is, it wasn't just about the purple potato. it was more about the farmer and his methods..but man. that potato

Purple carrot. I would definitely like to see one but it really sounds weirds. Does it mean that cross breeding is already known since 17th century? isn't it that people during that time are very conservation in terms of "getting out of what's the standard".
I hope I can see & eat one.

Making a carrot orange to be patriotic was something that they probably saw as honoring their country...rather than getting out of the standard. If someone learned how to alter a food for their country, I would think that they would be pretty proud. I guess the idea caught on...because we have orange carrots to this day. What do you think. :)

I don't think that I could bring myself to eat a purple carrot.. it just wouldn't seem right to me, and I think my mind would tell me that it tasted different. I mean, would you eat a green egg?? NO.. cause you wouldn't think it would taste the same, and even if if actually DID taste the same.. your mind would make you taste something different. There may be lots of people that will eat it.. but I will not be one of them.. ewww.. purple carrots.
