Play the lottery?

That isn't my question, so please keep reading! No I was wondering what do you think the pros or cons are of a state lottery in a community. Do you think it is a plus or it does no good and why? Me personally I do not like ours because the money was suppose to lower school taxes we pay and go towards education. It did not lower the taxes at all and the money goes towards collage scholarship available mostly to kids of politicians. They had a HUGE blow up about a few years ago in the local news, but it did not change anything. So what is your opinion? Thanks to all in advance :-)

Personally, I like to think of the lottery as a "Tax on People that Can't Do Math" If you look at the odds, they are so incredibly astronomical, that you have a better chance of getting hit by lighting. lol

It's true. The odds are so insane, but it's amazing how many people still play, just because they heard about some old lady in Maine who won $30,000,000.

The pros are that it gives people a chance to win money that may not have alot of it. But the cons can be that it may end up like yours. I personally think that there is nothing wrong with our lottery system because haven't heard anything bad aboutit

I gave up playing the lottery ages ago .. our lotto here (UK) is privately owned .. most of the profit is supposed to go to charities and other worthwhile schemes, but they do take off a lot for admin purposes and we don't get to hear much about where the money is given. Richard Branson wanted to run the lottery and he was going to give 100% to charities .. but the government refused him .. crazy isn't it !

The North Carolina lottery, like most state lotteries, pays out 50%, meaning if you spend $10 in tickets, you will have a net loss on average of $5. This doesn't take into account taxes you will spend on any big winnings you get, which actually brings you down to an average net loss of about $5.50. In most cases, the money doesn't end up going where they say it's going, but on the other hand it's a first step towards getting gambling legalized in the state, so it's give and take.

A little while ago, here in MyLots, I answered someone's question about the Pogo.com site and if it ever paid off in money. At the time, I thought that Pogo probably gave you better chances of winning than a state lottery ever would. I don't play the lotto, lottery, etc., and haven't for years. I try not to waste any more money than I have to.

I don't play often, just if I'm in the mood. I got really angry when they had all the lottery proceeds going to the new stadiums - which I can't afford to go to!!!! There was only supposed to be 2 games at a time going to the stadium, but there were at least 5. I do like to play Keno and the proceeds are SUPPOSED to go to the school system... I only play for fun, entertainment purposes only.

I live in Pennsylvania and the lottery benefits senior citizens who get a $500 rebate check every year on their rent or their property taxes. My friend got a rebate even though she was not a senior because she was a widow and it was very helpful to her. They are now planning on rebating to every property owner from the new casinos but I'd much rather they had just expanded the lotteries. those casinos everywhere bring a lot of baggage and it's not usually good stuff.

Hello! Well, in my religion either playing lottery or the use any other type of gambling systems is forbidden. For the same reason that you had just mentioned: who knows where that money is really going to end up and because it causes an addiction in people that many of the times makes them feel miserable.
