The planning, design, construction, and management of all types of works and facilities including building and structures, transportation facilities, water resource development projects, power generation plants, and other facilities for enhancement of the environment. These functions are generally categorized as public works, although the civil engineer also serves industry and provate clients. The Englishman John Smeaton, builder of the Eddystone Lighthouse, was the first to identify himself as a "civil engineer," in 1782.

I read a discussion started by an interviewer where he told that he interviewed 6 students. All of them were not able to tell the name of a famous civil Engineer. I also don't know any famous civil engineer although I know now the name of the John Smeaton but I did not know that he is the builder of the Eddystone Lighthouse. I thought is is really important to know about somewhat great from this field.
