How to stock an alochol cabinet

I got a cocktail making kit for christmas, with mixes, etc, but every cocktail recipe has different ingredients like triple sec, grenadine, vodka, rum, mixers, etc. I don't want to buy everything all at once, but I do want to start making some cocktails. When you start stocking your own alcohol cabinets, do you buy what you need as you go along, or do you buy all the makings at once? How would I save a little bit of money on this?
