If so, how much? And what kind of programs?
We let our son watch TV. He loves Little Einsteins and Higglytown Heroes in the morning while he eats breakfast. He also watches Dora the Explorer and Blue's Clues most days. And Backyardigans is his favorite!
He also has a collection of about 100 movies. I've heard a lot of people say that watching TV is bad for kids, but I think my son is just fine. I always watched TV when I was little, and I think I turned out fine, too.

Television creates different vision for people to view the world.

I let my 2-year old daughter and sometimes, my 5-month old son watch TV. My daughter LOVES watching Dora the Explorer on Nick Jr. and on DVD, in fact, she has a whole collection of Dora the Explorer shows. It's fine with me because Dora is not just an ordinary cartoon show or cartoon character, my daughter has learned a lot of things from her, including some Spanish terms. My 5-month old sometimes gets to watch my daughter's shows too when he's bored playing in his crib. But if his big sister is not watching TV and he's bored, I usually put in a Baby Einstein DVD to stimulate his brain. Other shows that my daughter likes watching is Barney, Elmo's World, Sesame Street, Hi-5, Fun Song Factory, Blues Clues and The Backyardigans.

I am a student and I have been through this phase in my life and why I only everyone else..also.My personal experience says that TV is one of the major factor which determines his personality ,his behaviour and also helps in gainig knowlegde.(may be right or wrong)..
So to use this gadget in a good manner I think it is the responsibility of the parents to keep a watch and also guide them in selecting the show..which are informative..and are exclusively meant for children...I support watching Discovery,Animal Planet and National Geographic channels without any doubts..

I don't feel watching tv is bad for children. I do think it's bad when tv is used as a babysitter. My youngest daughter turned 2 in November and until recently, she had no interest in tv. I have noticed that she prefers sitting on my lap and looking at a book. She absolutely loves sticker books!

My boys, age 7 and 8, can each have an hour of TV and/or video games per day. They have to decide how they want to use the time, and when it's up - its' up. I don't find that they are addicted to TV, but that may be because it has always been monitored and limited. I don't believe that TV is linked to ADD or ADHD at all.

I don't really think it is directly linked to ADD either. When I was little the TV was ALWAYS on at our house and I never had ADD and neither did any of my siblings. Don't get me wrong, we all played sports and had outside interests too, but I bet we still watched 4 hours or more of TV every night. Plus an hour in the morning while we were getting ready for school.
And I do think we all turned out fine. But my mom did limit what we were allowed to watch, instead of how much.
That's pretty much what I do with my son, too.

I let my daughter watch T.V, she is 1 and she loves to watch Franklin, Dora, Little Einstiens, The Dog Whisperer. I turnt the T.V on in the morning and put her shows on while she eats breakfast and she really doesnt pay it much attention unless one of the shows she like are on... but then again she does really love the mini wheats commercials LOL anyways i havent begun limiting her T.V watching because she is 1 and doesnt watch much at all. She is usually too busy playing with toys and chasing her cat around the house. but once she gets older her t.v watching will be monitored and limited.

Children should be totally discoraged from watching TV. It is the Idiot Box and makes the watcher into an idiot. Children should spend time out doors playing games and indoor studying lessons. They may be allowed to watch dicovery channel or animal planet for short while. Micky mouse is always there to entertain. It is the children who watch TV for hours who are throughly spoiled and grow up into useless citizens.(Even watching quiz programmes is not advisable as the mind gets diverted in finding answers to useless things of practicl life)

it depends on how old the child is. i think too much t.v. is bad. let your child do something else that will develop his muscles and physique. let him do some outdoor games. he can't just sit there and watch the whole day. though some of the shows are educational, you should limit the watching.

My son will be one year old next week. He's very active. We can't do anything outdoors though, because we live in North Dakota and it's just too cold during the winter.
I let him watch TV pretty much anytime he wants. Unless he's in his high chair eating or watching me cook, he is free to crawl around and play while we watch the tv. And he likes to stand up and dance when there is any music on tv, so I think it actually helps him be more active in some ways.

I think it is not if they watch, but what they watch. The programs you listed seem fine. I do not think that too much tv is good for them. Increases obesity, decreases social skills, and I have recently seen an article on how it is linked to ADD. Everything in moderation.

Watching TV is bad for kids if that's all they ever do, and they say that the reason TV is bad for kids is because it doesn't teach them about human interaction. Anyone can sit and watch TV for 8 hours a day, but that doesn't mean they're going to be a people person, and know how to behave with people.
I have a 4 year old and a 2 year old, and they *watch* about 2-3 hours of TV a day, and the TV is on ALL THE TIME.. it doesn't get turned off until I go to bed at night. They love Blues Clues, Dora, Diego, Backyardigans, Atomic Betty, Miss Spider.. they love everything, but we spend time together as a family, doing things with each other all day long.
They'll watch TV in the morning while I'm making breakfast, then we all eat as a family, and they help me ( in their own way) clean up. We do crafts, and we play together, the TV is there so that when I have to clean, or do dishes, or cook, that they're not getting into trouble. And I don't see anything wrong with it at all.
I watched soooo much TV when I was a kid that it wasn't funny. My mother told me that it was the best babysitter in the world.. I don't use it like she did, but the point is, I am perfectly normal and fine.. and I wathed more TV in a day than my kids do in a week.
There's nothing wrong with kids and TV.. as long as you show them that there's a world other than what they watch on Television.. I don't want my kids turning out to be like 'The Cable Guy' .. and I don't think anyone else would either.

My kids watch TV all the time. I don't see anything wrong with it. It is entertaining and (usually) educational and it keeps them occupied when I need to get things done (so yes I do use it as a babysitter).
They watch all sorts of stuff from stuff on Noggin (their favorite channel) to stuff on regular TV. Their favorite show is the Simpsons. They have been watching it since they were born and it is our family time together.
They used to watch a lot more but I have cut it out a lot. Mostly because my oldest 6 years old) would sit in front of the TV all day if I let her. She is lazy. Also they bug me when they are in the living room and their shows annoy me now (I can only take the repetitiveness so long).
I like to put on stuff from the Discovery channels or History channels because then we all learn something. Yesterday I put on a show about building a new skyscraper in New York and my son was fascinated by it. He is 5. My 4 year old loves anything on the Animal Planet.

Yep. Both of our boys watch TV, mostly the Disney Channel. My oldest also loves Blues Clues, Bear in the Big Blue House and The Wiggles, which he watches on VHS. I also collect Disney movies, so we have a bunch of those, as well. Some other cartoons, however, on other channels I kind of think are gross and would rather them not watch them. CatDog and some of the others. I don't know if Nick even still plays them since they usually just watch The Disney Channel or movies.

I'm a tv-aholic. :) So, the tv is always on in my house. During the day, I keep the disney channel on. My daughter is 14 months, so it's just background noise. She'll look at it here and there. Most of the stuff is educational, so I figure she's learning. Once she's older, I probably won't keep it o constantly.
