GOTH - What is your idea of goth.

I was a goth in the early 70's, going to The Bat Cave, dressing in black or purple Victorian dresses, dying my hair black, the*white face* makeup, the heavy gothic jewellery, I loved the music, the whole gothic genre. I shopped in Camden, listened to The Mission and Sisters of Mercy, even got asked by people if they could take my picture:-)
When I finally got married, I felt I had to give it all up and become a*normal* wife and mum, but at the back of my mind there was still a goth lurking, buried deep inside. Now I have gone back to my gothic roots, I go to Whitby Goth Festival, go clubbing, love the music both the old traditional goth and the new goth bands, I have a few small tattoos, still wear the make up and do my hair. I still love to wear long velvet dresses and the jewellery. I have dragons, gargoyles and bats in my home, my bedroom is lilac with purple velvet drapes and black satin sheets.
I know so many of the younger generation goths and they seem to like the idea of a 55 year old woman still being goth, but the perception of being*goth* has changed a lot over the years. Goths were never the sad, depressed, angst-ridden suicidal ghosts they are perceived to be, but what is your idea of*goth* I would love to know.

I live near Tampa, Florida, so the goth scene here has a heavy Marilyn Manson influence. (He started off in this area as a dirt rocker, and never quite faded away.) There's also an increasing cross-over between the goth and BDSM communities. So, you see a lot of vinyl and latex, a lot of heavy, chunky boots.
My style has always tended more toward velvet, deep rich colors, silks and lace, though. It's evolved a bit over the years, and I've started also wearing a lot of gypsy-ish/hippie-ish long skirts and indian fabrics.

Yea I'm a fan of boho/gypsy etc styles myself simply because they are SO damn comfortable especially in the hot months (LOL I'm all about the comfort)....Leather I've always loved but PVC, latex etc..hell no, that stuff is SO damn UNcomfortable and way too hot especially if you are out clubbing etc plus i had enough of it when I was dancing....I'm not a fan of lace but only because I remember when it was really itchy, apparently the quality has gotten much softer over the yrs but I've not ventured there LOL...the velvets and rich deep colours you mentioned I am a HUGE fan of..

I guess goth is one of those styles that never will fade away, rather it will continue to influence. I have my *hippy* clothes, although I still tend towards the black/purple/dark red colours.

I'm also from the Tampa, Florida area. The high school kids dress emo... or like dirt rockers and they think they are goth. I prefer the kids that dress like marilyn manson to the kids that put on a dirty t-shirt, baggie jeans and eyeliner and call themselves goth.
MsRetro is right - if you go to the goth clubs here it's a lot of vinyl and leather, and scantilly clad people in huge boots. There are also some people that go in WWII Nazi type clothes.
I always liked velvet and lace, dark colors, pale face, dark hair... I always had fun with my make up - thick eyeliner and drawing vines out from my eyes and putting little rhinestones at the end. Getting dressed was always an art to me - matching clothes, doing my hair, my make up, my jewelry.
I also think a lot of people are misguided on what goth is in these modern days - I actually heard someone tell me recently that Good Charlotte is goth. I don't think I have laughed so hard in a long time. When I think of Goth I think Skinny Puppy, the Cure, Depeche Mode, Siouxie and the Banshees, Peter Murphy, the Tear Garden, Clan of Xymox, London After Midnight, Love Spirals Downward, Ministry, Black Tape for a Blue Girl...I could go on and on. It's not just about music though. The Gothic subculture likes certain types of art and literature as well. I think lately with the younger generation it's just something to shock their parents. I run into middle school and high school kids all the time wearing Skinny Puppy T-shirts - I ask them their favorite song and they can't tell me any songs the band sang.
At the same time I also see kids with Jimi Hendrix, Lead Zepplin, the Beattles and Janis Joplin shirts that they bought at Target - and they don't have any idea what they sing either...

something with weird patterns or color that emphasizes depth. I like gothic images but not those devilish types. i like church designs and angelic ones.

I'm so glad to meet a gothic girl here!:) I like gothic music, darkwave, ebm and so on. I go clubbing around in places like that but I love to go to rock clubs.
I think Gothic generation was very influenced by The Cure even if the band never say they are dark or gothic, in fact they had a pop period too in their discography. Robert Smith started to dress dark with the white face, lipstick, and straight long air and most of people who reconized theirselves in his look and his music dressed in a gothic way like him.
I think it is hard to don't change the look with time, so I'm very happy you didn't so much. I think gothic generation changed very much with time.
In the years of The Cure, Depeche Mode, Siouxie, Bauhaus, Sister Of Mercy and so on, there were true gothic people! I love that years. I always wanted to be 20 years old in the 80's. I hate the age i'm living.
Today goth is so fake! It is more a commercial thing, today there are lot of band on Mtv dressed in black with black make up and people and they act as they were gothic.
To be gothic doesn't mean only dress in a dark way.
Goth is a culture, and I think everyone can live it in the way he wants. I think If I'm gothic or not I haven't to show it with my dress code.
Ok I love gothic literature, music, movies and culture in general but I can't understand why I have to show it.
I don't like to label myself "I'm a metal head I'm a gothic boy" because I want to be free so, one day I dress black with spikes another day I dress in a normal way.
Lol I wrote that but I'm half sleeping I don't know if I wrote well or not, but I'll pass again here to follow this interesting discussion.
There are lot of things to say about gothic culture, but I
fell sleepy right now lol
By the way if you have some pics of you, add here I'm curious to watch your style:)
see ya soon!
Stay true in your heart!
Ps: watch this video by Malice Mizer "beast of blood" They're japanese and very gothic in their style (maybe you already know them).
I love very much their style and their dress are the most beautiful

you should be a good mom too! Often parents wants their children do what they did in their past.
Lately goth became a fashion, but there are still real gothic people, I can see in clubs, they wear in a "extreme" gothic look, but you can see them at night. It is very hard to find them in the morning going around dressed that way. Yes there are few gothic people around but not dressed the way they go to clubs.
yes I like too to dress black, as I like to dress other colour even if I like to dress in a different way from the other. I like a lot the blue night colour, grey and red and green army too. I don't like any kind fashion.
It is a very interesting topic. I'm waiting for your pics:P
Have a nice day!

Great posting hun. I have had a similar discussion with my son and some of his mates. They are all in their early 20's and we were talking about music and styles. One of the lads was very *anti* the whole goth genre yet was quick to state that he liked listening to The Cure. When I stopped laughing I explained to him that Robert Smith had been around a lot longer than he had. He was shocked to realise that the music I was talking about was before he was born but it made them realise that you cannot possibly judge without stopping to think first.
I am lucky that my son understands my love of the gothic genre, he doesn't share my taste but then I wouldn't want him to, rather I would prefer him to make up his own mind. Even his mates, when they saw some of my old photos and listened to some of my music, said that maybe they were wrong and that the old style goth genre had a lot going for it. They also agreed that the modern *goth* wasn't a patch on the original and they felt that most of the kids their age who simply wore black jeans, t shirts and black lipstick didn't really stand up against my long velvet dresses and purple hair.
I don't like the idea of having to strictly adhere to any particular stereotype, being a goth just suits me and I wouldn't want to change. I don't wear colours as such, I just prefer my black, purple and dark reds as they are colours that suit me, I could never see myself wearing pastel pinks for example but that's just me.
If I can find some suitable pics, I will post them hun. Thanks for your input.

I have the same opinion about *goth* that I do about any other fashion fad.... who cares? People dress the way they dress for personal reasons, wether they wear Oscar De La Renta suits, or black victorian dresses. I don't care how anyone dresses or how they choose to accessorize their outfits.. it's all the same to me.

Thanks for your comments. I wish others held your views sometimes, the fashionista seem to think they can dictate what to wear.

Hi, My idea is pretty similar to yours! When I was younger I used to have long black hair, white face, all in black with a black tuxedo!! I like you got married and became 'normalish' although never given up wearing black! and again like you i've now gone back to my old ways, although without the white face so much and perhaps a little more sensible (and may I hasten to add wider) clothing. Strange what phases of life you go through. Anyway my idea of a goth is not sad or depressed we can give them the 'emo' tag now, but arty and individual in their own right!
