We like a nice green salad for dinner. You know, lettuce, tomatoes, cukes, mushrooms, green peppers, etc. But it's not filling enough so we started looking at what else we could add besides bread on the side.
One of our favorite things (and easy) is to open and drain a can of solid white tuna and break it up over the top of the salad. Wow, that turned out to be really good! And I like ranch dressing so that makes it even richer. And yummy! What else have people tried? Easy stuff that doesn't involve cooking (like chicken, which is great but that's turning into a lot of work.)

Beans are a good way to add some protein and fiber too. I like chick-peas or kidney.

Chick peas are the same as garbonzo beans, right? Sounds good. I'll try it.

I like bacon bits on mine - either fresh-made or dried in a bottle.
I also like the tuna with italian dressing (with or without the salad...)

I started eating it that way a long time ago. I would go to this place for lunch and they served a salad with a tuna pasta salad on it, with italian dressing over the whole thing. It was great!

Hubby sometimes puts bacon bits on his. I hadn't thought of Italian dressing on tuna. We use mayo with tuna for sandwiches, of course, but plain tuna with Italian dressing sounds interesting. Do you do anything else with it or just eat it like that?

Salad is a term applied broadly to many food preparations that are a mixture of chopped or sliced ingredients. A salad can be served cold or at room temperature, and it can also form the filling for a sandwich. Though it can be made with meat or eggs, it usually includes at least one raw vegetable or fruit, most often lettuce. Often it is prepared or served with a dressing.
A salad may be served before or after the main dish as a separate course, as a main course in itself, or as a side dish.
Salad may refer to a blended food item— often meat, seafood or eggs blended with mayonnaise, finely chopped vegetables and seasonings— which can be served as part of a green salad or used as a sandwich filling. Salads of this kind include egg, chicken, tuna, shrimp, and ham salad.
I enjoy salads. I toss a little bit of everything in them. I like the standard..... different cheeses, hard boiled eggs and bacon bits. I am now trying to sneak more fruit into my salads with pears, apples and dried fruit. I've started adding pecans, pine nuts and almonds trying to get more protien, fiber and grains in our diets. I am not allowed to put cucumbers, squash or radishes in our salads, my hubby does not like them.
When I have company over, I like to make a colorful salad by adding green, red, yellow and orange peppers. It gives the salad a nice festive flare. I like to experiment with different dressings. I had a terrific cranberry vinegrete the other night. The remainder of my family will only each ranch dressing. I prefer the vinigrete dressings because they have more zip and less calories than creamy dressings. Salads are a fabulous vitamin source, fiber and in general wonderful for your body!
Be creative with your salads, with all the different veggies and toppings, no need to have the same salad 2x's in the same week.

Excellent suggestions. Thanks. I'd forgotten about radishes. I'll have to pick some up next time I go shopping.

add bacon bits , cubed cheese slices & either fruits like raisins or pineapples or mandarin oranges can make your salad more colorful with chopped walnuts too.

I'd always thought of mandarin oranges as being in a Chinese salad, but with raisins, pineapple and walnuts, it sounds like it would be great in a green salad. Very interesting. Thanks.

I like to use leftover meat to put on top of salads. Like bits of chicken after I cook a whole chicken or taco meat.
A weird, but not necessarily filling topping I discovered a while back was to substitute stove top stuffing mix (dry) for croûtons because you get some really good flavor.
Grated cheese can be a good topping. I try to keep a couple of hard boiled eggs in the fridge, you can cut or dice those up.
Something else I love, that just grosses hubby out is to throw raisins or pineapple on. The sweet of those contrasted with the flavor of a tomato can be quite delicious.
Varying the lettuces you use can make an old worn out salad recipe taste new all over again.

I like those tortilla strips they sell now. Get the Santa Fe style and top your salad with the usual stuff plus some shredded cheddar cheese, black beans, corn and avocado. Now you have a yummy Mexican salad.
I also like those new Almond Accents salad toppers they sell-- the butter toffee is really good. I also load my salads up with olives, roasted red pepeprs and sliced lunch meat like turkey and provolone, cut into strips.

I like dried cranberries and roasted almonds and black olives on my salad. Sometimes I like black and garbanzo beans, tomatoes, and sliced avocado. The beans are high in fiber and the avocado is rich in healthy fats, making both toppings very filling and yummy.

the kind of tuna garden salad you mentioned is what i usually prepare too.. i enjoy adding some bacon bits aside from the croutons then cubed sliced cheese , cubed apples with little lemon juice ahead , pineapple tidbits mixed with the tuna before adding to the mixture as to lessen the stingy or fishy smell & sliced hard boiled egg to complete the presentation.
there are a lot of ready to eat bacon bits & prepacked garden salads that may have lettuce , onion rings , tomatoes , beets , cucumber & pepper that are really great!

They have chicken already cooked and cut up in stores, Perdue makes it and it's called shortcuts. It's quite good and very convenient. What is also good, is some hard boiled eggs cut up and cheese and ham.
What I like adding on is breaded chicken strips, they come frozen and only take a few minutes to bake in the oven.

Sometimes we add sliced hard boiled eggs to our salads or diced precooked ham. You can also buy white chicken meat in a can, that tastes really good too.

Hey girl... I eat salad for dinner a lot.
I like to chop green onions, broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, ANYTHING really, and use it and half the lettuce you would normally use. I use canned tuna, bacon bits, cheeses, croutons as toppings.
Hope this helps. If you need any other ideas, let me know
