The wonderful state of Virgina in their infinite wisdom has taken my personalized license plates from me. They, like my username, said "BYTEMI". It is an expression of me. Apparently so old lady complained that she found them to be offensive and the state took them away. I feel that is absolutely unfair, if they are going to offer personalized plates I should be able to express myself, byte me does not hurt anyone.

A DMV somewhere also wouldn't let 'STFU' (which I guess was actually an acronym for something personal to the driver) be used either. I think it's ridiculous. How is BYTEMI offensive to anyone? People are far, far too sensitive these days. It's crazy. Everyone just wants to take offense to everything they can.

I find it to be outrageous that they took your personalized license plates away from you! You paid good money for them I'm sure. If the old lady didn't like it, she didn't have to stare! I'd be completely irate if I were you! Talk about censorship! I feel for you cuz that's just absurd!

The sad part is I protested the removal of the plates and the lady actually showed up the hearing to state her opinion. All she had to do was stay away and I would have been able to keep them. I think that some people just need to get a life!

Hi
Officialdom is strange isnt it!!
How can anyone think your Plate is offensive!
One thing I have always wanted is a personalised plate, but with my name it is difficult.
You may not understand this next bit, seeing as you are American and I am English, because we use different numbering systems for our Auto's
Here in the UK we have just changed the numbering system to come into line with some of the Euopeans, but it used to be like this......
The first three letters were the County of Origin, followed by some numbers (the number of vehicles registered) followed by a letter denoting the year that the car was registered.
We have a Doctor in our village by the name of Richard Prior, and he got himself a personalised plate.
RPR 10 R
What he did was to put a space inbetween the first three letters, and then join the others together.......
R PRIOR
That is about the best one I have seen!!!

Saying directly to someone "Bite Me" is offensive, but the way you spelled it is cute. I would think you're into computers or something. I would have probably laughed when I saw your plate. I hate it that people can control other people this way because of their personal preferences. I say that if you can say it on TV, than it's OK to put on a license plate.

agreed, some people are just too damn sensitive these days. some people just need to calm down. if i saw a plate like that, i would start laughing. i don't see some good plates now days. i guess everyone is always scared to offend someone else. what would that old lady say if you had a big bumper sticker saying "BITE ME" i know that have some pretty racy ones, what would she still report you because she doesn't like your sense of style?? c'mon, its just becoming stupid.

I personally think there should be no restrictions, and anyone who gets offended can look somewhere else. But there are restrictions, and there is a system for complaints, so you have to accept the risk that whatever you choose might get censored. I personally would not even bother to choose, but just accept whatever plates they give me by default, such as three letters and three digits, or whatever. It just doesn't seem worth the bother or aggravation.
Besides, I don't really want people to recognize my car. I would just as soon be anonymous. There are lots of situations where it's better to be anonymous.
What if I happen to drive past a crime scene, and a witness remembers my license plate. When the cops ask the witnesses about any license plates they might have seen, mine might be the only one they remember, because it might be the only one with a cute word instead of cryptic letters and digits. So the cops might question me, and if they don't happen to like me, they might frame me for the crime, so they won't have to bother to do the tedious work of investigating it enough to find out who really did it.
Or what if I happen to be in front of someone who has road rage. It might be on a congested road with traffic moving at a snail's pace, and the person with road rage might be late for his wedding or job interview. If my license plate has a cute word which he happens to remember, and he sees my car parked somewhere sometime in the future, and he happens to be angry then too, even if for a different reason then, he might decide to do some kind of damage to my car, just because he recognizes it as one he was angry at in the past.

I agree with you on the anyonyminity. I drive the speed limit and many people hate that, so I'm afraid they might cause problems for me. We have a lot of psychos where I live.

No I don't agree with you. If my youngest child seen that on your license plate and asked me what that meant I would have rammed the back of your car. I don't need my children seeing language like that posted to people's cars. Come on now adays with tv and the little thugs our children hang out with, do they really need somewhere else to get swear words and rude comments from? I don't think so.

I suppose the term 'Bite Me' can be quit offensive to some people! It just depends on the circumstances but I personally would not be offended.

I feel that is completely unfair! It should be your decision what to have on your personalized license plate as long as it's not sexually graphic I cannot see where the problem is. Bite me use to be my favorite expression, lol, but I had to stop using it. My babysitter called me one day when my daughter was two. Apparently my daughter had done something wrong, I don't recall now exactly what it was, and my babysitter had told her she needed to stop what she was doing. Well my wonderful daughter turned around, looked her in the eye and said "Bite me!" I laughed sooo hard when my babysitter called to tell me this, but I did make an effort to stop using the phrase. Now however, my kids are older and I think I can bring it back and begin using it again, lol

That is funny, and yes I try and restrain myself around the kids, that is why the plates were so nice, instead of saying it, I say "Go read my plates" and leave it at that. I got some strange looks until the people saw my plates and then they started laughing.
I have considered getting personalized plates again, but honestly, if I go through the hassel to find something that expresses me, I just feel that they would be taken away again.

I don't agree with that , if they originally didn't have a problem with it then because of the complaint of one person should not have been enough to take something from you that you bought and paid for . I use that expression all the time and if someone doesn't like it then don't listen to me . Where is freedom of speech if it only takes one person to decide that what you choose is offensive . That could be said about almost anything in life . It's not like she had to look at it , in no way could this possibly hurt her .

I am sad for that woman that she has nothing better to do with her life then pick on and take apart others. She should have had "tea party" or old lady club to go to instead of court. Just paint it big on your window or get a nice vinyl decal. Drive on.

Have you thought about complaining to the state about HER license plate...I mean who's the court to tell you that XKE 2032 isn't offensive to your sensibilities?

you are right. You should sue them for doing that. But speaking of virginia, i know they have some of the most ridiculous laws, some of them outliving their existance, and some just for the reason of existing and no other apparent use. For example, in virginia, it is illegal to set up mouse traps if you do not have a hunting license. Sounds too stupid, right? I think your license seizing matter does as well. If i were you, I'd have sued them immediately, and the old lady as well. Why don't you do the same too?

I have seen many bumper stickers with worse stuff on them. I feel if the state issued the license plate to you in the first place, then they shouldn't take it away. If they are going to take away a license plate for that kind of stuff then they shouldn't have issued it in the first place. Did they make you pay for a new plate or did you get to have a personalized given to you for free.
It is funny that your screen name is bytemi. My key chain, though very small, says bite me on it and I have had it for years. maybe the lady was just having a bad day.

I think that is just plain stupidity.
Why would they happily pass over the plates knowing what it says.
And then decide to take them away after 1 person complaining.
Get a sence of humour old woman!
You deserve to have whatever you want on there,
Go find the old lady and take her plates off her car!!! If shes smart enough to have a licence....
