Did you know that a potential shortage of coins in the USA could mean that soon, our pennies may be worth a nickel each? Talk about an effortless way to make some extra money, lol! We may all find ourselves just a tiny bit richer one day, just for having saved our pennies! ^_~
Of course, it _may_ not happen, or it may be awhile before it does. But doesn't this story make you want to hang onto all of your pennies, now? LOL ^_~

I read about this last year about it costing more to make a penny then it is worth. But there will all ways be a penny i think becouse nothing would add up right unless they changed it to a 2 center and rounded every thing but i doubt this will happen.

Well, pennies are made from Zinc now, not Copper, which makes them even more worthless. This story was all speculation by an economist at a Chicago bank. I wouldn't bet on seeing this happen. Heck, I know how to make my pennies worth more anyway right now. I do penny smashing. That's where you turn your penny into a souvenir by smashing a new design into them. These machines are usually located at museums, amusement parks, and other tourist destinations. It costs 50 cents to smash a penny in the machines, and the going rate for buying or trading one is usually around $1. Now THAT'S a valuable penny! Give it a try. It's alot of fun!

The mint has a point. If it only take 154 pennies to make a pound and that material is worth more than the face value of the pennies...then there will be people melting them down to sell the material instead. That makes sense...not cents. ha ha
But if they change the penny to be worth the 5 cents of the material...what is going to take the penny's place? What material would cost less than $1.54 per pound?
Very interesting story! Thanks for sharing!

How would that work exactly? Would we go to a store and give them a penny and it would be worth 5 cents? Would we have to go to a recycling place and the penny would be worth about 5 cents per one? I didn't read the article but it sounds interesting. I don't see it happening though. I'd almost bet the penny would be gone before it happens but really fun to think about. I have a huge pickle jar I'm filling up with just pennies. That would be worth about $500 when/if it ever gets full and the penny is worth 5 cents.

Wow. This certainly would be great news as we all would love for our pennies to have a greater value then they do now. That would be wonderful as I was hating pennies til you had brought this up. LOL Thank you for sharing this link. I hope they do this soon as it certainly could help our finances if we are saving our pennies and coins. It would be nice if the other coins would go up in value as well. :-)

Ok I, myself would miss the penney. Not because of the value of it but because when I was little my grandmother use to tell me that if I found a penny face up then that meant my angel was thinking about me and just wanted to say hello. I've also told my grandchildren this. So I would miss those little "hellos". :-) I've also heard they are going to recall all of the NEW nickles. Seems as how it has the buffalo on the back and well lets just say he's a bit to ummmm manly. ;-) lol

That is indeed interesting! My girlfriend has been saving up pennies for a while, mostly because they're a pain to carry around, and they do add up after a while. I wonder how long it might be before something like this happened though...I'm betting it won't be for at least the next couple of years.

I wounder how much my 1772 "cent" would be. Did you know that they named it the cent so it would be different in then brittish money? So it calling it a penny is un-American! I thought that fact was kind of funny...

Wow! This is very interesting. You can be sure that I'll start saving my pennies and nickels too! LOL Wouldn't that be something if they were worth that much more someday? If they aren't it would probly be a nice rainy day fund for my family to have a vacation or something. :)

I saw the article about pennies to. The one thing I wasn't sure about, though, was if the current pennies would be worth a nickel (since they are not pure copper), or if it is only those that are pure copper. We'll just have to wait and see what happens.
Thanks for your post.

Oh wow...wouldn't that be great? lol
I would hate though to see the penny vanish. I get giddy when I find pennys that others just throw down, cause I know if I find them and save them they'll make up to a dollar very shortly.
But yes, it does make me want to hoard all my pennys "just in case". lol

You are right to some extent but you see man if your dreams come true that the vale of coin should increase it would take alot of time or maybe american state bank introduce new coins and the old one's perform like trash.
