I was wondering if anyone has been on Metformin for any reason? What was your experience?
More specific... have you been put on Metformin for PCOS?
I have PCOS and have finally gone off of birth control. We are waiting to see if I get my period, if not... Dr is talking about putting me on Metformin so we'll be able to conceive as planned in April.
I don't really know anything about this drug and know that it wasn't made for the purpose of fertility so I'm just wondering about it.
Any side effects? Any problems to worry about?
Was it successful for you?

i am the poster girl for metformin and pcos. Metformin is wonderful for us pcos girls. what it does for pcos, it regulates our insulin which in turn helps to regulate our over production of testosterone. which is why we dont ovulate, we produce too much testosterone. you will loose weight on metformin as well so that is a major added bonus. the only side effect it has, it it will give you diarrhea until you get use to it. But take it from someone who knows. it is so worth it. you can see on my profile the benefits of metformin. i have a son and can happily report another baby on the way thanks to metformin. if you have anymore questions or just want to talk about pcos or the struggle to ttc(trying to concieve) im here :) Hope this post helped and answered some questions for you.

doctors will tell you differnt things when it comes to taking met when pg, i was told not to while my best friend, also a pcoser was told to keep taking it. the weight you loose isnt from having the runs.lol its from your body regulating the insulin so your body isnt storing fat thinking it has to. thanks for saying my son is cute. i think so too :) gl with it. i know the cysts on the ovaries can be painful, especailly when and if they pop. dont worry, in no time you will be going to get pregnancy u\s instead :)

Thanks, I do hope so :)
Hmm, I joined Jenny Craig and I don't feel I'm losing as much as I should be. Do you think this could be because of the PCOS? Maybe I should have my Dr. put me on it so I can lose this weight before getting preggers.

Thank you very much! Did you stay on Metformin while you were pregnant or just while TTC? Your son is adorable! Was the weight loss from diarrhea? Also, lately I have been having some issues with hair loss, I think it's probably related but I'm not sure. Maybe my hair will grow back if I go on it?!
I had an U/S done last week and I have lots of cysts all over both ovaries but on one there is a larger one that is 2.2 cm and on the other one there is another that is 1.8 cm.

Yes.. I too have been diagnosed with PCOS and was on Metformin at India for some months mainly to reduce my weight but it never helped me.So I discontinued it and now four years later, I am again using it because I had some irregularities in menstruation and also I have insulin resistance because of which, manytimes I feel very weak and dizzy after a meal...its the insulin spikes reducing my blood sugar levels very much that I almost felt very weak and so on. But now Metformin seems to help atleast for stabilising the blood sugar levels though it doesnt seem to reduce my weight. But after the initial use, I had very bad side effects....I always used to have bloating and my stomach was like ready to explode anytime. I had nauseating sensation also. But they all go away gradually when you start taking the pill along with food. It also reduced my cravings for sweets and chocolates which was very much before because of the imbalance in insulin levels. May be I will reduce some weight also gradually as now I dont take any more chocolates and pastries like I used to do before.

Tiffanie, you might find that you feel dizzy, light headed or tired after a meal that is high in carbohydrates? That is noodles, rice, bread, etc? The reason is that these readily convert to sugar in the blood and you might get a quick high followed by a huge low where you want to sleep. Best way around it is to reduce the carbs and put in some protein and green veggies. You will feel so much better!

Yes, I have PCOS, just diagnosed last year, and started on Metformin (extended release) the same day I was diagnosed. I have seen an amazing change, I've lost weight, have regular periods for the first time ever ( although part of it was the Yasmin I'm on, too).
Have you been to soulcysters.net? There is a ton of information there, that I didn't know. Good luck, the side effects were awful for me, but after the first 4 weeks or so, I'm fine.

When I was told to have PCOS in the past, I was given Metformin and Provera to get my period. Metformin made me dizzy all the time. When I wanted to have a baby after knowing I had PCOS I was given Clomid, and used it only for one month and I got pregnant.

Yikes! I would be scared to use Clomid. I really don't want to have multiples. Did you have multiples?

Nope I didn't have multiples, I wish, because I can only have a baby cesarean so I have a limit. I just had one. Because you just got off the pill, it might take a few months to get pregnant. Don't try too hard though, my ob said do it every other day, it better your chances of conceiving.

I was on Metformin a couple of years ago. I had my first son with no problems and when we decided to try for another we had no luck, - months without periods then one then missed for months again, so i eventually saw a specialist who confirmed that I had PCOS, she put me on the pills and within 4 months I was pregnant. I had no side effects from it . We are trying for a third time and it looks as if the problem is back again so I may well end up taking it again. Good luck and I hope it works for you. xx

I'm sorry but you are wrong. If you aren't getting your period then you aren't fertile and Metformin will help you get regular periods, so.. in turn, it does.

It doesn't matter WHY you aren't getting your period, if you aren't getting it then you aren't fertile. If you have PCOS then that is prob why you are overweight. I am on a weight loss program too and I'm finding I don't think I'm losing as much as I should be, if it continues then I will talk to my Dr. about it and maybe be put on the Metformin because I have been hearing that'll help you lose weight.

I have heard about Metformin as a treatment for PCOS and was wondering the same. I don't like to take medicines, but sometimes you just have to!
