Canadian teachers are calling for school boards and government to crack down on students with cellphones. What do you think?

I agree. The cell phones should be left in the student's lockers. This way, there is no temptation to use the text messaging, game, internet features. By allowing them in the locker, the student has the phone to phone parents after school or for other important calls ...outside of the classroom! We had an incident at our local college where a student took a picture of a test for someone who would be taking the test later in the day!!

That is one of the reasons, they want them banned, along with the fact that the kids rile teachers up then take videos of theteacher acting up.

I think that students should be allowed to have them for emergency situations, but that inevitably opens the door for students to use them when no one is looking. In college, they're much more lenient about it. It can bring the class to a halt for half a second if someone forgets to turn their ringer off, but I've seen professor's have their phone go off too. I think that cell phones should be easier to just use for emergencies, like be able to put the phone on silent, but have a special emergency priority ring that makes noise anyways. Maybe some of them are already doing this, but I've yet to see any.

cell phones - many different types of cell phones
I feel that cell phones should not be used in the school, or classrooms. They will distract children from learning, and they are not needed in the classrooms, while the teacher is trying to teach a leason.

its all well and good for students to carry them ,but really, they don't ned them on in class. it interrupts the lessons and are known as methods for cheating.

I agree with the comment about keeping them in their lockers. If the parents have an emergency, they can call the main office. Tuition is for learning and not for the added cost of a high cell bill.

Cellphones are a distraction, I agree, and the smaller children should not be allowed to carry them, but I think they are required for the older children. I can cite a personal experinece when the cell phome of my son in an engineering college was confisticated by the head of a department (HOD) while he was using it during a free period. I met the HOD and explained to him that since the college was located far away and students had to use public transport to tarvel to and from college, their having a cellphone was a must so that communications were possible in case of any event. Just a few days before my son's cellphone had been confesticated, a bomb had been found and defused in a public transport bus which carried students mainly. The HOD understood and agred to my point of view and now students have to declare and handover the phones when they enter the class and are allowed to use their phones once outside the college building and during free periods.

I think that it is ok but they should not b using then in class. The reason that I think that it is ok is because they should be used for emergencys and you never know what somone is going through at home!!

Under normal circumstances I would say yes. I would allow a child to carry a phone if there was a family emergency. During my last year of high school my grandmother was extremely ill, and I needed to be reached on short notice. My phone rang acouple of times during class, and it was understood that there would be times when I needed to be reached.

it must not be allowed during school hours, it is okay for them to bring it, but the use of it while in class must not be allowed.

i think they should ban the use of cellphones inside the classroom but they should not ban it if they are inside the premises of the school. cellphones are essential too! what if there is an emergency the family of these childrens can contact them as soon as possible. students should should not be using their phones when they are in the middle of a class.

Chidlren should not be allowed to use cell phones during class (whether regular or text). The volume should be off so that the ring doesn't bother others. Of course, having them in gym class could be a problem if your students do the showering thing. It's a definite problem that needs attention, but not 100% sure of the solution.

I think in the classroom while class is in session is not right. It's rude and disrespectful for a student to be chatting away from the teacher is teaching and other students are trying to pay attention. The same goes for texting in class, it's still a distraction. If the student is on a break say for lunch, then I don't see the big problem with that. Good question!

Of course. I don't think that cell phones should be completely banned, but students shouldn't be playing on them and ignoring their teachers.

When I was in highschool, we could bring our cellphones. However, they had to be turned off. And the teachers couldn't see them, or they would take them up, and made your parents come pick them up themselves. (The teachers who actually cared). In some classes my senior year, everyone called people on the cellphone, text messaged. and the teachers didn't even care. .IMO they should be allowed in schools although they should be switched of during the lesson or kept on silent/vibrate mode .

School should be for learning, not playing with phones. The office is there for a reason, it's not like it takes an hour for them to get on the intercom and let you know there is an urgent matter for you.We didn't have cell phones when I was in school and everyone turned out just fine! The future generation is going to be doomed with stupidity because they think school is for friends and phones and not for getting an education and getting a good job when they are older! GIVE ME A BREAK!

No way there should be no cell phones in school at all. I never had a phone in school and i did just fine. As a parent i would not allow my kids to have one in school. There is no need for them.
