I used to do that all of the time. One time, I was on my way to a job interview. It was pouring rain, and I locked the keys in the car, with the car running.
What a quandry!
I now have those springy plastic clips. I either attach it to myself in some way or my purse. This way I am tether to my keys, one way or another.
And this is actually a great tip for the elderly. If you drop your keys, you no longer have to bend down to pick them up. Just grab the tether and their they are.

I myself have never done that but just last wek my neice borrowed my car and then called to tell me she locked the keys in it. I had to walk to where she was and break into my car, which was scarily easy. Then we went straight to the store and had extra keys made so if it happens again we won't have to break in or call a locksmith.

Since you mentioned you were able to break into your car that easy, If I were you, I will start thinking of having a new set of locks. That is a scary thought. Cheers.
