How Soon Do You Pack?

United States
January 28, 2007 10:19am CST
Okay, I have this discussion with a certain someone everytime I we get ready to travel. I tend to wait until the last minute to pack everything because that way I know I won't forget something and leave it out because I used it. I generally just grab things and pack it - and usually finding a walmart once I get to my location to buy whatever I forgot :). However, this certain someone will start packing a week in advance. I can't imagine having the suitcase out and open for a whole week at a time! But lists are made and stuff is checked off - and it's a very organized way of handling things that I just don't do well. How about you? How soon do you pack before a trip?

i pack the night before i am ready to leave everything except what i need to use in the morning. Then in the morning after i have used what i needed to use, such as deaodrant, hairdryer, tooth paste, ect i will pack all that stuff and then i am ready to go.

My favorite is when I don't pay attention to what time of the month it is *blush* I've never been open about stuff like that and I get so embarrassed going into walmart to buy ONLY that...because everyone around you knows exactly why you're buying it and that they better watch out for you because you're hormonal...*laugh* or at least these are the types of things that go through my mind...I always try to find a female to check out through - it somehow makes me feel less self conscious *grin*.

I just got back from staying at my mother's house for a whole week - and I left a whole bunch of stuff at home as usual. However, I was a bit more upset about leaving this time and wasn't really thinking all that well. Do you usually end up forgetting stuff?

*ack* that's no time at all - it does take me at least a few hours before hand just because I'm so scatterbrained I end up doing about 15 things at once...I start packing and end up washing dishes somehow all in the matter of 5 minutes...I start one thing, then go to another, then go to another and finally making it back around about an hour later *laugh*

I'm like you. I usually pack the night before and the morning of the trip. I'm usually doing laundry and need a few things from that to take with me... I have most of my toiletries in duplicate, and they're always in my travel case, which makes that part easier. I travel a lot, so this way I always have what I need. Let's face it, no matter where you're going you can get anything you forgot at a store or from the hotel. I can't see stressing about it for an entire week beforehand! It must be hard to deal with such an "organized" person as your travel partner!!

*laugh* I do get picked on a lot by my BF because of my last minute packing. I also get a lot of flack because I pack SO MUCH - but hey, I've learned to fit a lot in small spaces, so if I have room, i take it. The problem is when I travel overseas...I always end up shifting stuff around from bag to bag just to keep from getting weight charges *grin* :).

I am with you on this one, there is not any point in packing early as everything that I will be packing I am also going to need before I leave. I like to pack just before I am ready to go as that way everything is out and I can see what I might need. I have forgotten things doing it this way but Wal Mart is also my best friend. I had an ex that would drive me crazy packing weeks before we left and then I would need something so I would go get it out and it never would get put pack in. We would argue all the time about this. Lists and organization work for some people but I am not one of those people at all.

*laugh* Walmart is DEFINITELY my best friend - I think I've been to every walmart of every place I've visited at least twice. As a matter of fact, that's one of the first things I look for whenever I travel is the closest walmart *grin*. The only exception was visiting my BF's parents - they had anything and everything you could ever think of in that house...*raising eyebrows*

I usually just throw stuff in a bag sometime within the 24-hours before I'm leaving. Unless a special occasion is involved, I don't need anything specific, so I need my toothbrush and shower stuff, plus enough clothes for the number of days I'll be there.

Well, I usually use one of my duffel bags that I still have from my military career, so I can pack quite a bit of clothing in that.

And you do it in one bag??? You are officially my hero. You see, I am terrified of forgetting something or getting bored. That's what I hate more than anything, so I look at all the projects I have going on at the time and I'll pick up this book or that notebook or whatever is at my hand in a panic just "in case" I get bored...and I never touch the stuff. I think I have some kind of psychotic complex :S

You sound like my hubby who always tend to wait til the last minute to pack things into the suitcase. I,on the other hand prefer to start packing early , maybe 2 weeks to a month in advance, to make sure I don't forget to pack in any item. I guess it's just my personality, I like to prepare things in advance.

That's one of the things I love about my BF - he tends to be strong in the areas that I'm weak, and vice versa. I am a spontaneous spur of the moment person and good at the drop of a hat - he is methodical and slow in making decisions and very organized...I need someone like that to keep my on track in my life :). Have you ever taken the Meyers Briggs personality type test?

I pack for a day or 2 days before our travel. For me to atleast ready all the things I need. I dont consider a week for it is very long period in packing things. When there is something in my mind that I should bring I put it right away for me not to forget it.

I am a synthesis of both, and I am not sure it really works. I make lists, and plan, and try to launder, and locate the suitcase. I start off, load up, then realize that my sweetie has not packed or selected a thing, so then I go get his stuff, then I run out the back door, grabbing everything that I can reach, that I might want to use, maybe, in a day or two. I still usually go find a Wal Mart.

That last part definitely sounds like me. Last minute, I'm rushing around grabbing whatever I can find in a frantic rush, thinking "Oh, I might need that!" ... forget the fact that I haven't picked up in over 3 months *grin*.

For the past 20 years, I usually pack the night before a trip. Not something my wife agree, of course. Well, women are more particular about such things. In fact, my wife would have prepared a checklist first. Her method is more efficient. Sometimes, last minute packing can be rather stressful and time consuming. It is good to pack earlier if we know we are planning a trip within the week or so.

I WISH I were more organized, but my personality is such that I do everything spontaneously. Take right now, for instance - I'm sitting in the Wingate Hotel parking lot because my internet was having trouble in the house. I didn't want to wait to call the computer tech guys so I went out to the hotel where I knew I could get the wifi - and I'm sitting in the parking lot working on mylot *grin* - isn't that sad? Hmmm...I wonder if that's illegal... *ACK*

I usually start about a day ahead. That way I have time to pick the outfits I want and have time to wash something just in case. The next day I just add my sundries and I am ready to go!

I will usually do all the laundry and the packing the day before, too - just because I'll usually be leaving so early in the morning. Do you usually end up forgetting something or are you right on target in most cases?

I have a bag of things that just stay packed. Personal stuff - deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo etc. Always ready. Medications get taken and then packed. Clothing. I count what I will need, add a few extra and then pack. My wardrobe is rather generic, so everything almost always matches. (someday you may see me on what NOT to wear). If I am brining other things...gifts etc. They are always in a separate area by they door, so they won't be forgotten.

Now this is interesting - because I've been traveling a lot lately, I began to do something similar to this with my toiletries. I now have a bag of stuff I keep for traveling purposes so I never have to pack or unpack it out of the shower - I have two of the essentials I need - one for home and one for travel. Have you always done that or did you simply start out of necessity?

Before I pack, I made a checklist first of all the things I will be needing. Sometimes, it varies of how many days I will be staying at my travel place. Normally, I started packing my days, 2 days before my departure so that I could have an ample time to evaluate, to check and even to finalize all my stuffs. I am a a forgetful person and sometimes, I need to check first or even you have to remind me again of some essential things to bring along to my suitcase.. I check my toiletries, my underwears, my jackets etc. Everything should be organized and well- managed before leaving. You should make a checklist and out of that even you are in a hurry in packing things, it would still organize bacause you take note of everything.

I don't start getting excited about a trip until about 2 days before we leave. That's when I start packing. I'm pretty organized, so I've pretty much thought through what I'm gonna take by the time I'm ready to pack.

I start packing about two weeks before I go away, that way I can re-evaluate what I'm going to pack and I know that I won't forget anything then! If I left it to the last minute then I think I would end up with all the wrong things in my suitcase!

Yup, I end up with about 15 things that I'm really NOT going to wear and nothing that matches - and then I get frustrated because I didn't check to see if anything matched *laugh*. I have gotten better about counting how many days I'm going to be gone and how many socks or things I'm going to need to take with me *grin*. But I always end up over packing just because I'm afraid I'm going to forget something I'll need *grin*.

well i am very poor in packing. i pack at the last minute so i do it in a hurry and i tend to forget few important things.

I usually pack a week before we go. I don't leave it to the last minute. I found out the hard way that if I wait, I will forget something. I tend to pack lighter by doing it earlier.

You have no idea, I once packed for a 10 days trip overseas and I started packing 2 hours before I got to the airport! Usually I start packing way before time but for some reason if it includes an airplane I pack a day before max.

When I'm getting ready to travel I feel like I need to have everything packed way in advanced, but most of the time I end up putting it off till the last minute. If you put it off till the last minute you can still get another load of laundry in.

I pack the night before I go anywhere. I make a list a few days beforehand, and keep adding to the list as I remember things. Then, the night before I go, I pack everything. I've been on so many trips that I know exactly what to bring each time. It really doesn't matter when you start, just so long as you finish on time!
