Oh, Mylot, I am not happy with you! I wrote a nice long discussion and you ate it. Now I have to try and recapture my words.
Good morning, my fellow Mylotians! Or good afternoon, technically. I just woke up so I still count it as morning.
This post has been a long time coming. I imagine each and every one of us has encountered a certain problem. Oh yes, no matter where we hail from or what we choose to discuss, we all fall prey to this most heinous of faux-paz. Misunderstanding of tone. How many of us have been accused of sarcasm when we were serious? Of seriousness when we were sarcastic? Of anger when we were calm? It has happened to me, my friends, it has happened to me and I am sure it has happened to you!
Imagine now, if you will, a new wave sweeping the internet. Tone Tags! Think what it would be! A simple tag to indicate tone! sarcasm, anger, amusement, shock and horror, really I'm laughing even though I find this appalling, morally outraged on someone else's behalf, I don't have a clue but I want more money so I'm making things up just to post! Clear, vibrant tags to show everyone exactly what you mean!
No more having to actually read and pay attention to what someone's writing! No more being polite human beings and asking for clarification! No longer must we give thought and attention to what's being written, because these tags will say it all! Because really, who wants to bother with actually devoting that much time to reading anything?*
So go forth, and use these tags!
*(Just imagine this whole post enclosed in a sarcasm tag)

Wow~ that was a mouthful! Wonder why Mylot has gotten so hungry lately?!? I really don't know what to say...I find your writings very interesting on a day to day basis but rarely respond because well...you say it all :-) Funny and creative idea about the tags, but that would just take all the "fun" out of it, wouldn't it? Now, I'm sure since you've mentioned it there will be several more discussions about it. And why? Because they aren't going to read everything that you wrote *sigh* but I guess you'll have that....

I'm just waiting for the first person who takes me seriously. And I know someone will, the Mylot Laws of Statistics deem it so! (Yes, I made those up.)

Sarcastic or not, it's a great idea. Mylot doesnt even have smiley faces. I hate the smiley faces but that's neither here nor there. It can convey what you mean without you having to say, "IT's a joke, don't get your britches in a bunch." Kudos for an excellent idea.

You hit on exactly why I sue LOL so much. I've been mistaken for being serious way too many times. Now I get accused of not being serious often enough, but I can live with that.

I know it was a typo, but it took me a minute to figure out "sue LOL"
I was thinking "How could you do that?" And "Wow talk about pointless lawsuits!"
Back on topic though, I have been known to use smileys and such when I'm writing a post that might be taken as being more serious than I meant it.

I think this is not right. I would like to believe that whatever I say comes out exactly how I say it. I wouldn't like to be obliged to use tone tags. And if someone doesn't like the fact then I don't care. I will leave it the same, whether I earn money or not.

Psst. Check out the last line of the post, where I clarify that the whole discussion was just a joke.

Tags are way too much trouble to look at. What we need is for myLot to develop the technology to be able to instantaneously transmit via brainwaves our thoughts AND intentions. Then we can just sit around thinking at each other all day with no misunderstandings.

Finally, do you think we can pick the colors of the tags? I want my "angry" to be orange, because I wan't my "really pis$ed off" to be in red. That's way better than smilies, don't you think? And another thing, you won't really have to "read" the discussions so much as skim them..When are the starting? Oh no I know that will be what the next stupid discussion will be "How do u use tone tags"
It is pretty rediculous here at times. Now if we had those tags in use, you wouldn't have to bother reading this because you would have seen my Green Sarcasm Tag...lol I love it. It certainly breaks up the monotony of searching for something to reply to.

I love this idea. I could drastically reduce my reading time by only pausing to read BLUE posts (because blue is a calm and peaceful color).

You make no sence first you talk about tags, then go off talking about sweeping internet to sarcasm.

The whole post was sarcastic. I was talking about how it's hard to read tone with just text, and wouldn't it be great if there were tags to just tell people what tone was being used....

While I get that your post is sarcastic, I have found that no matter what type of signposts you decorate your posts with, readers will interpret your post as they will. While John may take you post at face value, Susan will read it and immediately decide that you are posting with a hidden agenda and trying to trap her into making a foolish reply. Harvey, on the other hand, will be convinced that you have a secret window into his life and are making fun of him to all of his friends by hiding your cryptic messages in your posts. Lastly, Deidre will decide that you've hated her all along and have chosen this passive-aggressive way to express your true feelings.
Please enclose my entire post with bright yellow smilies all around :) :) :) :) :)

LOL i just love reading your posts! You are a riot! I agree with you totally! People need to sit back and relax. If you read something and it offends you, re-read it...more than likely you will see that it could be taken more than one way. If you aren't sure if the tone was rude or sarcastic or pissed, then POLITELY ask the question. That is one thing bad about chatting on line...you can't SEE the expressions when people type as you can when they talk. Communication is as much--if not more--about non verbal expression as it is about the words being used.

Thank you! I live to entertain! :D
People are too quick to jump on what they *think* they've read, not what's actually written.

Good idea. Though I like to read the whole post out of interest it would be good to understand if the writer is being serious or if it is just a joke they are writing. By the way, has mylots payments for posts and responses gone down lately. Seems that all the forums are paying less lately. Not really fair seen as they only pay very little as it is for the time spent here. They used to say that you could live in the payments you got here at mylot, or any of the other paid forums. It seems now that if you spent too much time wasting your time on these things you would end up starving.

Oh yes there are times when we do get blamed for being sarcastic, this has happened a few times in my life. Well I always read what is on the discussion as how are we suppose to respond clearly and properly to what the discussion is about. I do not think that this discussion will be in a sarcasm tag. It is right to the point of what you are saying,.

I think tone tags would be cool. It would be nice to have some icons, and a few things. If it could be done without a cost to mylot that would disrupt them being able to pay us for our posts. In the meantime , I guess we have to be as self explanatory as possible, because its all we have.
