BULLYING ~ It's time to take this seriously ~ It has to STOP

A very dear friend of mine has been on the receiving end of what I can only describe as sexist bullying and intimidation. She is a hard working woman, committed to what she does and damn good at her job. She met her partner last year and is now pregnant with her first child, a time she she be happily enjoying.
However, a member of the "team" made advances which she refused, and now she is being bullied by this guy, intimidated and reviled to her colleagues and now has been forced out of her job.
The reason she was given for her dismissal was "we don't think pregnant woman have a place here and we won't employ mothers with young children"
So basically this pond scum creep has managed to get her dismissed simply because she wouldn't sleep with him. I'm absolutely livid, this is the worst possible form of bullying and intimidation and it has to stop once and for all.
This incident has made we think, though, how many other women have suffered this kind of abuse, how many others have had to put up with this treatment.
This seems to be an issue that goes largely ignored, so I am asking in this community, how do you feel about bullying and intimidation?

This is disgraceful behaviour - I would point her in the direction of the nearest solicitor straight away - A huge case for unfair dismissal!! Bullying is getting worse and worse and I have been on the receiving end of intimidation on a few occassions. It's the worst thing in the world, you get a knot in your stomache and dread (going home in my case) or to wherever your perpurtrator may be! I think it is now coming more to light specially since the Big Brother allegations. To be honest I read somewhere that bullies have usually received this treatment themselves, so perhaps councilling might work?

She has now seen her union rep on the matter and will be taking this one further. I have to applaud her courage and will support her all the way.

Good for her on seeing the Union rep. Hopefully something can be done and I aggree whole heartedly that bullying has to stop. Any kind weither it be children/teenagers at school, adults in the work place, and even parents that bully and intimidate their kids. ANY kind of bullying needs to stop. I am so sick of people that intimidate others when they don't get their way. My thoughts are with your friend and I hope everything works out for her. Good for you for supporting her, true friends really are a blessing.

I will be finding out soon whether she can take this further. The legislation in place really doesn't seem to support the victims though.

I was a victim of bullying at work, and I actually suffered a nervous breakdown through it, I just couldn't take it any more, the managers were very sympathetic and in the end paid me off but even so it did leave a nasty taste in my mouth, epsecially as nothing was done about the culprits in question. Bullying doesn't just happen to women it happens to men as well. Unfortunately bullying still goes on in workplaces and unless you have a really good manager then these things will escalate. Discrimination and nastiness has no place in the workplace yet some people will continue to make others lives hell and it's sick. These people are cowards and yes it makes me livid too knowing that these 'so called people' are allowed to get away with it. Thank you for sharing this story.

Thanks for reading this one hun, I do wish that more could be done to prevent bullying in the workplace, but despite legislation, there seems to be little anyone can do against these bullies unless they are caught in the act or filmed.
