Did you choose a child?

One of the greatest things I ever heard was an explanation my husband gave when he was explaining to our daughter (which he adopted at the age of 8) in an argument over him loving our 3 younger children more than her. He said to her "you have it all wrong. You see, I didn't get to choose them. When you mother had them we didn't know if the child would be a boy or a girl, what the child would look like, how he/she would react to me or how I would actually feel about the child. I was able to get to know you, I saw what you looked like, how you acted, how you felt about me and how much I loved you. He told her he didn't have to marry me with a child but he loved her so much he did marry me knowing he loved her as much as he loved me. I will always remember him saying "I got to choose you." How do you explain to your child when that argument comes out? I think we always feel a little jealousy over our siblings. What do you think.

Well, that was just beautiful and one day when our daughter asks, we'll come up with something similar to yours.
