Sad news, my sweet Neo is gone

Neo as a new kitten - This is Neo about 4 weeks old. We had just adopted him from the Animal Shelter the week this picture was taken.

Friday afternoon, around 5 pm, my little Neo went outside like he usually does for a little while. It was very sunny and nice. Well, an hour later we thought we heard him "knock" on the door, but he wasn't there. After a little while of not hearing him at the door, we began to worry. It was darker outside and getting very cold, and he usually comes to the door by now wanting food and to come inside. We call for him several times until we finally have to go to bed. He has done this once before, staying out all night, but we didn't call for him that time. He never stayed away even when we called for him. We didn't get much sleep and when he wasn't around the next morning we decided to go look for him. We live in a small neighborhood, and there is a large area of woods behind the house. We started down the hill to the side yard, where a creek is, heading towards the woods. That's when I almost stepped on him, lying there as if he were sleeping. However, he was obviously not alive. There were no marks on him, no signs of injury, until we lifted him up a little and he was bleeding from his nose and mouth! We looked everywhere for signs of an attack, but found nothing. His head seemed a little swollen, too. We thought maybe he ate something poisonus or even got hit by a car, except he was a good distance from the street and we live right by the cul-de-sac. Does anyone have any clues as to what could have happened? I was very upset, he was such a lively and sweet cat. He was only 5-6 months old. In the picture I added, he is a very young kitten when we first adopted him for the animal shelter. I miss my little buddy, and his sister Charlotte (we adopted a set of kittens) has been looking out the window as if she is looking for him. She is not very playful anymore right now. I guess she is mourning for him, too.

Im so sorry for your loss. It does sound as though he was hit by a car. The swelling of the head is more than likely from a tire or impact. And cats are so determined to live that most of the time they will run off after being hit. I have had that happen before and I always keep my cats indoors now. Its sad but if they go outside it is a good probablilty that they will end up getting hit by a car. Im sorry that you lost your kitten, Send his love to his sister!

I am very sorry for your loss. I believe he probably was hit by a car since his head was swollen and even though he was not near the street cats will tend to try to hide if they are hurt so other animals cannot attack them. That might be why he was in the woods. I do know cats will mourn the loss of another cat if they were close. 2 of my cats, Cougar and Cheetah (boy and girl) were like a married couple. They did everything together, played, slept and so on. Unfortunately, Cougar had to be put down because of kidney failure and you could see Cheetah looking for him. We just gave Cheetah more attention and comfort and she was okay after awhile. At the time we had 2 other cats but Cheetah never really bothered with them. Just give Charlotte extra attention and she should be okay. Again, I am so sorry for you.

Yes, we adopted the two kittens at the same time and they were about the same age. They played all the time, ate together, and cuddled so much. I have a photo in my photos section of them together. I have videos of them playing as well. I am glad I have those memories to share. Thank you!

I am so sorry to hear of your loss! I have a cat also and she tries to get out but after being gone for two days and being chased into the brambles by another cat, I don't allow her out unless she is on a tether or leash. We have raccoons in the neighborhood and they eat cats. I lost my lab to cancer last fall and I miss her too. Animals grieve as we do over the loss of a mate, compamion or human companion. The only way to know for sure just what happened is to take the cat to the vet to get his word on the matter. I am so sad for your loss. With time things will get better and maybe a new friend for your other cat. So sorry!

I'm so sorry what happened to your beautiful little kitty. I hope you have a little solace knowing that he is in heaven now and won't be hurt again. I have no clue as to what happened but it sounds like the other posters might be on to something with a car. I had a cat when I was 6 years old who was run over by a car. He hadn't come home that night and the next day a neighbor knocked on our door and thought they saw our cat on the highway. Unfortunately it was him. I know the pain of losing a pet. It's incredibly difficult. I hope Charlotte will be okay. It's too bad she won't know what happened to Neo. If only we as humans could communicate that to our animals. God bless.

I am so sorry to hear about your little Neo. He looks so sweet in the picture you added. I tend to agree with the previous posters that it seems likely he got hit by a car and ran off before not being able to go any further. Or maybe he was struck on the head by something. Its so sad to hear about and I hope you can find solace, and that charlotte can recover too. Big hugs (((O)))), Tanika.

I'm very sorry to hear about this... he was a really cute kitten too! I do think he was hit by a car, and adrenaline kicked in immediately afterwards so he was able to get some distance away from the street. My cat gave birth to a litter of 3 kittens about a month ago, and I haven't thought of names for them yet. So I'll name one of them Neo, in your kitten's honor.

oh dear, i'm so sorry for ur lost.he is so cute.i'm sure he's not hit by a car because u found him in the hill.i think he fell off and hit his head first.what u have to do if u have a small young kitten is never let them play outsite until they old enough to protect them selves.coz young cat mostly know about playing and cant sense of trouble fast.dont let ur other kitten play outsite without someone look after.

Le-Roy - The Cat I Lost
I am sorry for your loss, a cats instinct if they are injured or hurt in to find shelter or a spot to dye so they do not effect the litter or the others in the family. He probably got hurt and knew he was hurt bad and his insticts were to find shelter. One this I know is you may never know....it is hard to loose a cat they are part of the family and they leave a huge void.

My Maisy Moo left me after 16 years this past December. She'd been a great cat, though never very domesticated. I rescued her from the pound when she was just a kitten. She was with me during my 20 year old bachelorette days and my 30 year old family building days. She preferred the great outdoors to the confines of our house. Her kidneys failed her. I miss her calico body crouched to pounce on an unsuspecting mouse or chipmunk.
