Here's my situation...
About 2 1/2 years ago, my son went through this "sinus infection" thing. I say that, because it lasted for 10+ months! His doctor (at the time) gave him antibiotics... with REFILLS! So for 10 solid months, his doctor had him on antibiotics, day after day after day. Finally, they tested him for allergies, and realized Wow! This kid isn't just having a sinus infection for no reason! He really IS sick! Blah. Anyways. After x-rays and CT scans, and allergy tests, they finally put him on medication for allergies and he's gotten soo much better!
But, lately he's more and more stuffy, and he had a sore throat. So last Monday (today is Monday), I took him to the doctor. He's got another sinus infection, plus he had strep throat. No biggie... more antibiotics. But, he gave me 3 refills on it! And said to keep refilling this until he's better.
I tried to explain to him what he went through and that antibiotics aren't going to help him, but the doctor insisted that we try the antibiotics first. I again tried to explain his history of severe allergies, but he insisted right back that I keep him on antibiotics. Now, Monday, a full week later, he's running 103 temp AGAIN, after being on antibiotics. Do I continue or go with my gut and get a second opinion??

Taking antibiotics all the time can actually harm you more than do you any good.

Go with your gut. You know your kid the best, not the doctor. If your gut tells you that your child needs to see another doctor then get him into a different one. From what I'm hearing I wouldn't trust that doctor. Over doing on antibiodics can cause other problems. You should find out if there is another doctor in the area and get him in. That way even if it is an infection you will feel better about the situation.

ABSOLUTELY GET ANOTHER DOCTOR! Your son will become immune to the antibotics and they'll stop working all together and when he really needs them... they won't work and he can become so ill he'll die. So yes GET another opinion!
Hope he gets better soon!

Get another opinion, my mum kept being said that she had sinus problems for years but it was really asthma and by the time it was diagnosed properly it was severe and its led to problem after problem healthwise since all coz of a doctor misdiagnosing for years. and the more he is on antibiotics the more he will get immune and the antibiotics wont work when he really needs them just as lissa said

sometimes taking too many courses of antibiotics can cause you to be immune to them and that is not good and to me sounds like they are not doing any good and it deffinatly sounds to me like hes having some sort of side affect to them i say get a second opinion to put your heart at rest

I too have severe allergies and was put on an antibiotic long term. I had a years worth of re-fills on it. One day, I decided to stop taking the antibiotics because they were causing me to have yeast infections. My doctor put me on singular, which since then in 4 years (knock on wood) I've only had one infection. I do notice a difference if I skip taking the Singular that I am more stuffy the following day. Occassionally I do have to take a Clariton D to help alleviate the symptoms.
Good Luck, but do try to have him off of the antibiotics because it can't be good. Eventually they will no longer be effective in fighting off in the infections.

If he is running a fever, he either has an infection or a bug that is going around. If after the fever is gone, he is still having problems, then it is probably allergies. If the antibiotics are not working, he is probably immune from it, from being on them for so long before. You may need a different one. You should never be on them for so long. It will do more harm than good. If you are really concerned, you could get another opinion.

You have the right to seek a second opinion. Or, at least see the doctor again to report about the fact that your son didn't get even a bit better with the present management. Although it may be true that some diseases may require long term antibiotics, the fact that your son is still running a fever with the present medications means that the meds are not really controlling the infection.
