I really like how the Japanese use these chopsticks. I am amazed how these people eat tiny pieces of food with two pieces of fancy wooden sticks. =D Do you know how to use one?

I am a chinese my self and I learned how to use it by my self without my parent teaching how. IT is actually not that hard, and most of the asian or people that exposed to asian culture can learn it easily . Chopstick were actually invented in china , three other country who first adopted the use of chopstick were japan , korea and vietnam. Those four were well known as chopstick country before the use of chopstick spread all over the world . The reason why they use two stick to eat is because most of the asian food is in tiny pieces. It is customary for chinese to eat together and chinese doesn't use one plate per person system. They will normally have a small bowl of rice per person and several different dishes in the middle. They will share all the food in the middle and take when needed, with chopstick a person is limited to take one pieces at a time. Chopstick is not only limited to wooden type only, There are several type such as plastic , bamboo , metal and jade. wooden and bamboo used to be most common but until recently they switched to plastic where it is much more durable and cheaper compare to the wooden one . This is the reason why you see all most of the asian restaurant use plastic instead of wooden. metal and jade is the luxury type and it is not common type. The metal chopstick is not suitable for hot food and it doesn't hold food as well as the wooden type. Piercing the food with chopstick is actually is a bad habit when a beginner when first learning how to use a chopstick. It is not intended to used that way and it consider an insult to the elderly (asian) who used the chopstick their whole life. There are allot of don't when using chopstick but I can't remember much about it. I don't quite listen when my grandpa talk about it. Now I am regret that I does not listen that time, if not I can share this with all the people in mylot.

I've tried and tried to learn how to use chopsticks but to no avail. I get embarassed even more because my bestfriend laughs at me. She always tells people about this time when I used my chopstick as a barbecue stick just so I could eat my dimsum, finally. So when we eat Chinese or Japanese restaurants I always ask for a fork and a spoon.

Is that so? For the Japanese, using chopsticks like barbeque sticks are considered rude and ill-mannered. Don't do it if front of Japanese or Chinsese people alright? =)

Ya, thats really amaging to see japanese and chinese people using this chopsticks to have food, whether its noodles or tiny grains of rice. Its a great art using this bamboo sticks to eat food as fast as people eating with hand or spoon. I have tired many a times and still struggling to use this chopsticks.

Yes, I do. I had to learn it from a young age. My husband does too even though he was not brought up in that culture. But he learnt it himself and he especially loves eating noodles with chopsticks. And he does it really well too!

I can nearly use them effectively. I just need more practice because I hardly use them. What I want to know is, why did chopsticks evolve instead of the knife and fork in their countries. Surely its easier to use two hands than one?

That's because most Japanese people are busy bodies. It is true that you tend to eat faster when you use chopsticks (if you are good at it, like Japanese people). =)

Yup i do. For one i thought i should learn since our kind of job are inclined with having lunch or dinners with clients where mostly we eat in restaurants, Chinese or Japanese restaurants. to make an impression with our bosses, we should at least show them that we know basic things - like using the chopsticks. =)

That's pretty nice. You get to impress your bosses and learn something for yourself (using chopsticks). I never had to eat with chopsticks with my bosses if we are dining with Japanese clients.. Alhtough it will be perfectly fine for me if they'd require me to. =)

I knew how to use the chopsticks because in thailand,we usually use it for eating noodle and we use the chopsticks when we eat japanese food. I like japanese food such as sushi and udon. Actually, the chopsticks has 2 type;1 chinese chopstick made from plastic,it is round chopstick. It is difficult to use because it is too slippery to use. 2 japanese chopstick made from wood,it shape square chopstick. It is easier to use than chinese chopstick.

Yeah. I haven't used those round chopsticks made of plastic yet. They seem tough to use especially if you eat noodles or any other food with liquid. I'll stick with the square chopsticks. =)

Haha.. You DID find another use for chopsticks. LOL Well, just don't stick your chopsticks into your food when you eat out with Japanese people. They find it extremely rude and unethical. =) Thanks for responding!

step 1,Rest one chopstick on the 3rd and 4rd fingers with thumb on top of the middle part of the chopstick. step2,Hold the other chopstick on the index and middle fingers, by using the tip of the thumb to keep the chopstick in place.
