I just read an article talking about this. It says that taking a nap in the middle of the day at work can actually boost efficiency 34%! That afternoon slump is not because we just ate lunch, but because it is biological. Naps can increase motor skills, alertness and creativity! I knew there was a reason I liked taking naps on the weekends! LOL! I just thought I was recuperating from the week! Check out the article here

i think the company should allow that. i mean if it can help the effectiveness of an employee and his productivity why not! i myself also want to take a nap because i think that it will make my memory refreshed and will restore my energy back. by the way nice topic! ^_^

This is funny. Do you think the boss would mind a short nap at work? LOL Maybe they should have a nap break. LOL

At one time my boss had me doing research on "power naps." She thought it was a good idea and would increase worker efficiency and productivity. But in the end the idea of a state employee on taxpayer time just didn't go over very well.
Personally, I frequently take a 10 or 15 minute nap in the break room on my lunch and feel better for doing so.

Oh yes that is called "nap attack" time estherlou, so a nap for no more than 30 minutes can increase alertness etc. The same applies not only to work but also to when people are driving, and in fact in Australia there are signs on many roads saying "Nap Area" or "Rest, Revive, Survive", "Take a break every 2 hours" and things like that.
We do a reasonable amount of travelling, mostly by car, so regularly stop at these areas for a bit of a break. Just getting out of the car and having a bit of a stretch can help but often in the afternoon we will pull over and have a little nap for about half an hour before we continue on our way. I must admit that initially I put it down to advancement in years, so it was nice to read that there is actually a biological reason for it. :)

Nap area! That is really neat! We have rest areas in our country but they are mostly used to take a bathroom break, stretch your legs etc. I don't think I've seen people just taking a nap! I always got sleepy riding in the car, though. Sometimes when we traveled, my husband would get so aggravated at me, because I'd fall asleep so often while he was driving and I'd miss all of the scenery! LOL

Good grief! How terrible! Some people just can't live without causing grief for others! Don't understand that at all.

That has got to be why I usually feel like taking a nap when the kids do! Thank you for giving me an actual reason - other than I am just plain tired. Increased alertness is something that I need - so I will have to start taking more naps!

It certainly paints a funny mind picture! "Is there anyone that can help me? or is everyone here asleep!"

I used to take naps when I had my own Adult Family Home. Frequently there would be times when no one needing supervision would be home between noon and 5pm. What a great stress reliever it is to be able to take a good nap and then tackle a problem. It helps make up for a bad start that's for sure. I sent it to my mother's work email. I told her she may want to pass it around and even start a petition...lol My mother loves to stay in bed on the weekends watching tv and napping. If she's away from her bed too long she starts saying, come on, let's go can't you hear my bed calling me????

Our bodies need it. In Europe they would close shops so that the family could have a good lunch together take a nap and then go back to work latter in the afternoon. The cancer rates are lower in those countries. Southern countries also do this as well.
It is now well researched. But power naps not 2 hours or more or it interferes with your sleep at night.
Maybe the corporate world would get wind of this and make compulsory nap/quiet time and watch the profits soar from increased productivity and less sick days :) If they are smart they would impliment it to their advantage.

This is why I really enjoy my summers off from working at school. I can get up early, then have wonderful naps in the afternoon. I feel so good in the summer.

Personally I am not a napper. Usually a guy thing I always thought. There was a whole study done 10 years or so ago and then some companies had facilities for the employees to take the power nap. Never heard how well it worked out.
A protein snack could get you over that mid afternoon slump though!!
Thanks for the link to the story!

Okay. Article printed and ready to lay on the desk of my boss! HeHe. Yeah, I love mid-afternoon 'power naps' but in my line of work they are impossible! I do sometimes nap when I get home though.

At work almost all of my co-workers takes a nap for 30 mins. or more after lunch, as for me it doesn't work because my head will hurt for sleeping just 30mins..maybe its true those people that take naps at work are more productive or more alert but it just doesn;t work for me.
