Herbal Remedies, do you use them?

How do you all feel about herbal remedies? Do you use them in place of traditional medicines and therapies, or in conjuction with them? Do you feel they're as effective as traditional remedies? And do you think the FDA should be allowed to regulate the production and marketing of herbal remedies? In my house we use herbal and homeopathy remedies in conjuction with traditional remedies. I often try a more natural remedy for minor illnesses before I reach for traditional medication. I do feel that sometimes they're not as effective as standard medications, but it's a small price to pay for not dealing with the side effects from a lot of medications.

I would love to use more herbal remedies, but I don't know much about it. My daughter always seems to be catching bad colds, and I would love it if you could recommend something to help her.

Echinacea, Astragalus, and Grapefruit seed extract are all good immune boosters that are safe for kids. Herbs For Kids has a good immunity blend for kids that comes in both a liquid and a chewable.

I take black cohosh root for my mood swings. A few years back I was such a b*tch. I would lash out at people for no reason at all, and quickly turn around and cry my eyes out because I never saw it coming. I read many articles on menopause and it was suggested that using black cohosh root would help. Help it does! It took a little over a month for it to kick in. My coworkers noticed before my husband did.

I was watching one of the morning news programs the other day and they had a doctor on who was talking about herbal remedies. He said some herbal remedies are listed as not having an effect on a specific ailment when, in fact, they can be effective. It's just that it's not effective at the dose that's listed on the bottle. He specifically mentioned how black cohosh does help a lot of women with menopausal problems, but not all. So I guess when it comes to herbals, one has to experiment to find the right dosage.

I use them for some things. For fungus for example, I prefer to use gentian violet if possible, rather than a cream such as miconazole or shampoo such as ketaconazole. But sometimes I've seen severe cases of ringworm in pets that only something like Program (luferneron I think) would help quickly enough to relieve suffering.

I find raw garlic and ginger to be very effective in dealing with winter illnesses. My acupuncturist is also a trained (in China) herbalist, and she prescribes specific combinations when I need them, too.

I have in the past. I really don't like chemicals and medicine, or the way they make me feel when I'm already feeling lousy. My mom works in herbal remedies, so a lot of times she'll whip me up something all natural to help alleviate whatever ails me.

I haven't used prescription medicine for myself or my family for a long time--and I am a licensed physician! We use many forms of alternative medicine, from herbs to energy medicine. I find that it gives a more "complete" cure. In other words, you aren't left with a weaker immune system after recovery, and you don't tend to get sick as often. I don't think I want the FDA involved in any form regarding herbal remedies. True, there are companies out there putting out substandard products. The key is to get the herbs themselves from a reputable source, or if possible grow/harvest them. I have a small herb garden outside my front door. From athlete's foot to bird flu, we're covered. It gives me a great sense of security to know this. I grow comfrey, basil, rosemary, thyme, sage, lavender and lemon balm. I do keep powdered ginger on hand for a quick remedy for nausea--I'm a real sissy when it comes to vomiting (myself or others--lol).

I try to use at home or herbal remedies first before having to go to the doctor. I have found that often times they work better and are more price practical. Yes there are times whether I like it or not that I have to go and get actual perscriptions but for the most part that is rare. I don't know if the FDA should regulate it neccessarily. However I do wish there was more information easily found on what different things can do. More information on dosages, usages, more studies available to see what has worked for people and what are just old wives tales. I think it would take a lot of the guess work out of it.

We use herbal and homeopathic remedies for just about everything. My son and I rarely go to the doctor. I went in recently for some stomach problems and the doctor laughed because on my record for the last 5 years-I only went in for pregnancy checkups and to give birth lol. My cupboard has tons of different herbs, I've been into this for years so I know off the top of my head most of the time what I should take. I think sometimes they may take longer to work, but in general we don't get sick as often as my relatives that pop every over the counter medicine that's out on the market ;)
