In your opinion where do all the lost socks go to?

If you anything like me you will have at least 50 socks that do not have a matching one, I usually keep them for around 6 months to see if the lost sock turns up, but it very rarely does! Where do you think they go to? They can't get stuck in the washing machine else it would get blocked up. I've sometimes found the odd one thats got stuck in trouser legs or duvet covers but where do the rest go?? Any ideas oh and any ideas what I can do with the odd socks instead of throwing them away?

The Sock Monster
I live in your washroom, waiting for a pile of dirty clothes. I won't eat your jeans or sweaters, no, I want your socks.
He is pretty picky though, he will only go for the left ones, that's why you always end up losing one from a pair.
As far as what to do with mismatched socks. I save them and use them to dust with as well as to put over door knobs so they don't slam into the wall if someone opens the door fast. If all else fails, save them up in a big pile when you have enough, dye them all one color so it looks like you have matching socks.

Lol..I wanna see the Sock Monster. He's probably just very shy.
I always blamed my missing socks on the goblins from the story books I read at night lol. The ones which shards of glass as replacements for their missing teethe..I thought they used socks as blankets or something lol *was silly when I was younger*
I don't know where they disappear to really. I usually sew them into things. Fabric's fabric after all. They can make really good hats if you dew a whole bunch of 'em together. Doll clothes is another thing. Sometimes I keep them for when all the other socks need washed or if it gets too cold outside, I put them on my dog's feet lol.

No looked under the bed, another theory I guess is that birds steal them off the washing line to put into their nests??? Thanks for your response!!

Hi eskarena1, Well perhaps everyone has a sock eating monster under their bed, I've started to blame my cats, I reckon they put them round their paws to keep them warm! Well I can't figure out any other answer! Thanks for replying - have a great day!

Oh man! I have no idea where they go. I think that if I did, I'd probably be rich! Maybe we should call in a psychic on this one? I have tons of them. I save them until one day I get fed up, save a few for rags and toss the rest away. I always have good intentions, buy the same sock, no color on them, so they all match, but it always goes astray! Maybe if we all put our mis matched socks together, we could come up with a couple of hundred pairs.

Hi quispy, thats a good idea to buy the same coloured socks but all mine seem to fade.. I think selling them on Ebay would be a good idea, then someone could perhaps match them with theirs hehe, thanks for your response and have a great day!

wow.. so many cool ideas on what to do with the extra socks.. thanks everyone..
and as to where they go.. i'm just not sure... i've wondered before if maybe the companys make one sock that dissolves when you throw it in the washer just so that you have to go out and spend more money to buy another pair of socks..
I'm not sure about everywhere else but around here the new fad seems to be wearing mismatched socks anyways so my kids just grab a couple out of the drawer.. doesn't matter if it's an actual pair or not.. lol..
And I've tried the trick where you buy all the same color socks so that you always have a pair but your right.. it seems that one will lose color faster than the other so you still have a funny looking pair.

I have never thought about the dissolving sock theory! I think you might be onto something there!! Some socks always seem to fade faster than others don't they?? Thanks for your response!!

Hmmm... I don't know, there might be an elf stealing your socks.. LOL.
I usually throw my socks but the last time I made some creativity with my old sock, I put them in a vase with this flowering plant and until now the plant is still alive and I don't have to regularly water it b'coz the moisture last long in the socks.

There could be an elf stealing my sock, I never thought of that. I do like your tip on keeping them in a vase or plant, thats an excellent idea. Oh I don't many plants in my house as I don't really have green fingers and they die quickly, perhaps I can donate them to someone who does! Thanks for your comment, have a great day!

hehehhe this is the phantom sock eater..i have the same problem..even if i put them in the wash with the washbag..they still get nicked..but what i do find is that sometimes i will retieve socks two weeks down the line that the odd ones are lying in the draw..so they do get pired up...sometimes..

Weird isnt it, how do they get separated in the first place? They go in the wash together, so where do they go from there? I've got a good idea for them, I could stick them on ebay as 'ladies personal massager warmers' LOL or just sell them on ebay as 'odd socks' you never know someone might have the missing one!

My brother girl friend steals 'em and eats them. =)
We have lots of pairs that go missing, just like people's art work. funnily it ends up in her grubby hands and she doesn't act her age. (i hope she reads this)
Of course i'm joking. in a way but i do think she takes things without permission.

Maybe the missing socks get blown away when you put them on the washing line, but you never realise.
and with the odd socks, you could still wear them because they still keep your feet clean and fresh, but best not to wear them with a skirt because people will see.
Trainers and long trousers would be fine...
or...you could make puppets with them odd buttons lying around
